How is Enid adopted in Lurch Adopts Enid AU?
Did her parents get killed by hunters or something?
y'know what? you got a good idea right there!
since this is set before enid even realizes she's a wolf she's gotta be pretty young when everything happened
maybe it was a camping trip, some family bonding that was supposed to be a chance to relax and have fun
obviously, enid is the baby of the family so everyone is trying to keep their claws to themselves so she doesn't accidentally get hurt. she's, of course, seen them in their lupine forms before, but she's a toddler so all she sees when she looks at them are just some nice, furry animals
when the hunters first come, she's being looked after by esther while her dad and brothers are gathering wood for their campfire. she's getting tossed in the air and laughing as esther happily tells her stories about the werewolves in their family
and at first, the older wolf doesn't notice anything wrong
she's spending time with her family; they're capable wolves and a decently sized pack, to go against one would mean going against the others. this is a fun, weekend getaway
but she realizes something
her husband and sons have been gone for far longer than she anticipated
she brushes it off at first
these are new woods and unfamiliar territory to the family, they're bound to get a little lost even with their tracking skills
but she just can't get rid of this niggling in the back of her head
esther tries to keep her cool so she doesn't spook her daughter, but one hour turns to two, then three
where are they?
she's frantically pacing back and forth now, she wants to go look for them but she can't leave enid by herself
the young girl is sleeping, unaware of the turmoil her mother is going through
on the verge of tearing her hair out, esther then hears stumbling footsteps coming her way from an outcropping of bushes
and emerging from them, is her second youngest and he's hurt badly
before she can get any words out or do anything to help him, she hears laughter and sees the horrifying image of her son dropping to the ground with fresh arrow protruding from his back
even from the distance she can tell he is no longer breathing
it's shock that keeps her from screaming, but it is fear that gets her moving again
esther gathers a groggy enid in her arms, shielding her from the view of whatever or whoever attacked her family
tired and not understanding what is going, enid looks over her mother's shoulder and sees-
"well, look what we have here? more mutts," a voice calls out mockingly
esther stiffens, refusing to answer as she tightens her grip protectively on her daughter
"what? can't you talk?" the voice continues, getting closer. "though i shouldn't be surprised, should i? animals aren't meant to speak."
chancing a glance backwards, esther's stomach drops as she notes the insignia on the man's jacket.
hunters
with a malicious smile curving the shaved jaw, the man steps forward uncaring of the young boy he has to cross over in order to continue. "let's play a game."
Blue eyes regarded the mirror silently
Loving you
Scrutinizing the conflict before her
Was the most
But with a single blink
exquisite form
All she saw
Of self-destruction
Was red gazing back
One of my favorite things about any Wenclair story is how casually Thing gets thrown around, usually by an irate wednesday or oblivious enid
