i had a dream one night. but i wasn’t an object in the sky, on the ground or in some random shop. i was me. and you were there. and you were you.

we were laying on this field of grass and i watched you draw pictures with the night sky. taking stars to make your own constellations, dipping into the colours of the galaxy to add your splashes of colour and using the warmth of your hands to melt it all together.

it was beautiful.

i turned to you and asked. “what did it feel like?” you didn’t say anything, except smile as you continued making your art. and i continued to be in awe of it.

“like something more than anything we would ever be allowed to know.” you whispered into the dark.

“like love.” i whispered back.

excerpt from home (love, vds)

as a writer, there are countless times i have cringed at what i’ve written and constantly wish i had written something better. and it’s really hard for me to re-read my work (hence my amount of errors lol) because i am just never satisfied with the outcome.

but sometimes i decided to stumble upon some excerpts again, to remind myself that “hey, maybe i can write.” and i surprise myself a lot- i forget some of the beautiful things i have written.

Something Sweet?

a vds one shot. you can find more on my ao3.

( @ apolloswords )

feel free to comment/message me any suggestions for one shot ideas!

Lucas decides he wants to bake a cake. Jens decides all he wants to do is eat the icing.

this one shot is dedicated to meine liebe @ ankewbv ; a little something sweet for you <3

The flat was warm and cozy, unlike the chill of the winter air outside. Despite it being January, a few Christmas decorations still filled the place, including the tree with no presents underneath, stockings from the fake fireplace and even branches of garland all over the place. Yes, both Jens and Lucas probably should’ve taken decorations down considering it was now halfway into January, but they’re ere too busy spending most of the holidays cuddling away, drinking warm drinks and watching copious amounts of shows. It was both the absolute nothingness of doing anything that had them caught in an endless loop of days.

But not today.

Lucas was busying himself in the small kitchen of their flat that he didn’t notice Jens unlocking the front door and coming inside. The shuffling noises of him taking off his shoes, beanie, thick winter jacket and gloves made no distraction to Lucas in the kitchen. Jens frowned at the lack of a greeter and found himself leaning against the doorway, waiting to see how long it would take for Lucas to notice him. It wasn’t until he set down a bunch of bowls on the counter top, let out a long exhale and felt the presence of someone staring at him that he looked up. Jens waved from his spot in the door way, his large grey hoodie hugging his body warmly while the tips of his nose and cheeks seemed a little red from the cold winter air. Grinning, Lucas abandoned his spot in the kitchen and headed over.

Throwing his arms around his neck, he placed a small kiss on Jens’ cheek, almost startled at its coldness. Jens smiled down at him and wrapped his hands around his waist, pulling him in a little closer.

“Hey.” He greeted the smaller boy. “You seemed busy over there.”

“Probably why I didn’t notice you come in. I thought you were going to be out a little longer.”

Jens shrugged. “I was, but I got tired of walking in the cold weather and the flat looked so warm, especially with you looking all cute in your apron.”

Rolling his eyes, he shook his head. “It’s good to know I look cute because I am nervous this isn’t going to go so well. Did you get the stuff from the store?”

He jutted towards the front door, where a bag of groceries sat. Giving him another kiss on the cheek, though it still giving Lucas an icy touch, he let go of Jens and headed over. Picking up the bag, he carried it to the kitchen and began emptying it. Flour, baking soda, eggs, vanilla extract, cocoa powder, tubs of icing and more laid out in front of them. Jens gave him a raise of an eyebrow, still unsure as to what Lucas was up to.

“What did you send me running outside in the freezing cold for?” He asked, taking a seat at one of the stools beside the counter and sitting down. He began rubbing his hands on his jeans as an attempt to warm them up.

“I wanted to make a cake for Milan’s birthday tomorrow.” He explained, moving past the counter and opening some cabinets. “Do you want me to make you some tea to warm up?”

“Yes please.” Jens replied but then pouted. “How come Milan gets a cake and I don’t? We’re literally having a shared birthday party.”

“Because Milan will not be getting all the other gifts I have in store for you.” He winked. “Now, do you want to help me bake this cake or not?”

“Yes please.” Jens repeated again with a wide smile. “What kind of gifts do you have in store for me?”

“Well it’s not your birthday now is it?” Lucas teased, opening a drawer and pulling out a wooden spoon and spatula. “You will have to be patient.”

“You make me too excited to be patient.” Jens said, dramatically pouting his lip.

Unable to resist, Lucas walked over and cupped his face, before pressing a light kiss to the pour. He could feel Jens smile into the kiss, indicating he had won. But that wasn’t a really big deal, kissing Jens was also a winning situation for Lucas.

“It will be a surprise my love.” Lucas said, patting his freezing cold cheeks. “In the mean time, you need to warm up.”

“Is this my thank you for fending your baking ingredients in the cold harsh winter?” He asked. “You know, it was quite heroic of me to do that.”

Sighing fondly, Lucas kissed his forehead. “Thank you my hero for braving the cold with a dozen eggs in hand.”

“It was my pleasure.” Jens laughed back.

-

“I think I only put two cups of sugar in the batter.” Jens noted as Lucas began mixing it.

“You think?” He asked, immediately putting the spatula down.

“I think?”

“Jens, we doubled the recipe. We need four cups.”

“Well then maybe I put three.”

“You’ve never baked before have you?” Lucas asked, giving him a smug look as Jens wrinkled his nose.

Snorting, he rolled his eyes. “I indeed have baked before.”

“Watching your little sisters bake and letting you lick the batter of the spatula doesn’t count as baking.” He teased.

Scoffing, Jens dipped a finger in the batter and quickly spread it on Lucas’ nose. Lucas didn’t know how to react and let his bottom lip pout. Giggling and more than amused, Jens took his finger again and wiped it off of his nose, before licking it. Wrinkling his nose in disgust, he tried to give Jens an annoyed look but the smile on his face gave him away.

“Is there enough sugar?” He asked wittingly and Jens nodded with glee.

“I think I actually added four cups initially, like the hero I am.” He finished off the icing on his finger and nodded towards the batter in the bowl. “What exactly are you making?”

“Something sweet.” Lucas replied with a shrug before going back to mix the batter.

“Something sweet?”

“Something sweet.” He repeated with a hint of mischief.

Jens just gave him a kiss to his temple, even though he was a little annoyed by Lucas’ lack of an answer. He didn’t really do much of the baking, except for measuring the sugar. He mostly just sat at the stool, watching Lucas bake in awe as he sipped his tea. By now, he must’ve felt warm enough to actually help Lucas out.

“Is there anything you’d like me to do?” He asked as he leaned his head on Lucas’ shoulder. Due to his height, he had to crouch down a bit but Jens didn’t seem to mind.

Kissing the top of his head, Lucas felt warm and fuzzy all over.

“The batter is almost done mixing so I just have to pour it into a pan. And the oven is already preheated so cake wise, everything looks good.” He thought out loud. Clicking his fingers, he looked at Jens. “Do you want to add some food colouring to the icing?”

He nodded and lifted his head up. “How do I do that?”

“You know how to mix colours right?”

“Like paint?”

“Kind of? I just mean putting drops of food colouring into the white icing.”

“Why didn’t you just get icing that was already coloured?”

Snorting, Lucas raised a brow. “I don’t know. Maybe I should actually ask the person who came home with the bag of white icing and food colouring. Jens, why did you come home with a bag of white icing and food colouring and not icing that was already coloured?”

“Because there was none at the store?” He sheepishly replied with a crooked smile.

“Because there was none at the store.” Lucas explained with a wink.

After a ruffle through his golden locks, Jens took apart the bag of icing and portioned them into four bowls. Lucas handed him the small food colouring bottles of pink, gold, white and red. As Lucas began pouring the batter into a circle pan, Jens kept on double checking if he put the right amount of droplets to get to the desired shade. Lucas nodded and Jens quickly whipped up all the icing as Lucas put the cake into the oven and set the timer to bake.

“Do you think the icing is going to taste too store-bought?” He asked Jens nervously. “I tried making my own out of powdered sugar but it doesn’t seem to be working.

Shrugging, Jens dipped another finger into the pink bowl of icing and swiped it up. Taking a lick, much to Lucas’ disproval, he nodded eagerly.

“Tastes good.” He announced and Lucas huffed.

“You think almost everything tastes good.”

“Fine, try for yourself.” Jens suggested.

Figuring this was a good time to get Jens back, he also scooped up some pink icing with his finger. Though instead of licking it right away, he swiped it onto Jens’ face in a quick motion. Except instead of aiming for his nose like he planned, he missed and ended up brushing the icing on Jens lips.

Jens stood there, smirking with pride knowing that he won this round. But, like Lucas always thought, there was a fair way he could win too. Acting quickly, he leaned forward and gave Jens a kiss, before teasingly swiping his tongue against his boyfriend’s lips to get some of the icing. The sweet taste lingered on his tongue, and he had to admit, it was pretty good.

“How does it taste?” Jens asked, wiping the rest of the icing off with his thumb before licking it.

“It’s not too bad. Did you like it?”

“I told you so. It doesn’t have a super store-bought texture or taste to it.” Jens agreed. “It’s going to taste amazing with your cake.” Lucas felt his hands on his waist before pulling him in closer and pressing their foreheads together.

“I don’t think Milan would appreciate us dipping our fingers into his icing.” He giggled against Jens, gripping on the front of his shirt.

“Well that’s too bad.” His boyfriend smirked. “With you in that apron and those giggles? I have something sweeter that I can’t resist.”

Continuing his fit of laughter, Lucas pulled Jens in closer to him. Their lips met, resulting in their kiss being a mess of giggles, wide smiles and icing all over. But that didn’t stop neither of them, and as they waited for the cake to finish baking, they slowly began to dance under the kitchen light, the soft glow of the oven and the warmth of their love.

-

The morning sun creeped over the light snow on the ground, letting the snowflakes shimmer and glisten. The city was still fairly quiet, the only noises outside of their apartment being the faint chatters of early risers and shops beginning to open. When Lucas had opened the door to the bedroom, Jens was still tucked in the abundance of blankets. Only his head peeked out, the collar of his white sleep shirt looking almost like the pile of snowflakes outside. Lucas watched his boyfriend in awe, sleeping soundly in the haven of their room of their own little home.

He figured that maybe he should wait until Jens woke up, but his excitement could hardly be contained. As he inched closer to the bed, Jens seemed to begin stirring awake. After a few moments of ruffling in the bed and finding out he was the only one in it, he meekly opened his eyes. After rubbing them a bit, he seemed to take note of Lucas standing in front of him.

“You’re up early.” He yawned, stretching a bit and sitting up. His hair was a floppy mess and his shirt was a little wrinkled. But he looked so soft and wholesome that Lucas felt the urge to wrap him up in his arms for a few extra moments of sleep.

But right now, his hands were full.

“Happy birthday baby.” He greeted gently.

Jens’ eyes still didn’t seem to register what his boyfriend was holding, but he did make grabby hands towards him. Lucas smiled and gently held the object with both his hands, as he tried to get on the bed slowly. Jens’ hands guided him to sit on his lap, and it wasn’t until Lucas held out the item right in front of his eyes that he realized what it was.

Smiling, Jens pulled Lucas in a little closer and traced his hands up and down his back. Lucas continued to grin on his lap, as he admired the way his boyfriend seemed so in awe at his little surprise.

“What’s this?” He asked softly, letting his dark brown eyes look shyly into his favourite blue ones.

“It’s one of your many surprises.” He quietly explained, still unable to resist the grin on his face.

“I thought you said I wasn’t getting any cake.” Jens teased.

Shaking his head and giggling, Lucas replied. “I may have had to alter that statement a bit.”

“Did you make this for me?”

Lucas excitedly nodded as Jens placed two of his hands underneath Lucas’ and the cake, supporting it. His eyes lit up at the light brown icing and the dark red lettering, reading out Happy Birthday Jens! in swirly cursive lettering. Right below the words was a little red heart, so perfectly done that only the hands of a skilled artist could make.

“When did you make this?” He asked, his voice still dripping with awe.

“I woke up really early this morning to bake.” Lucas explained. “I should have let it chilled a little more in the fridge but I was too excited and wanted to wake you up with it.”

“God Lucas, you are the best boyfriend anyone could ask for.” Jens mumbled. He leaned forward to press a kiss on Lucas’ lips, careful not to squash the cake between them. Lucas grinned and giggled against the kiss, feeling more than relieved that his cake was appreciated.

Jens pouted. “I hope I didn’t make you feel bad when I said it wasn’t fair Milan got a cake and I didn’t.”

Leaning over to kiss his forehead, Lucas shook his head. “No it didn’t don’t worry. I had this planned out for awhile, I just needed to practice baking before I did yours. Don’t tell Milan but his cake was more like a test run.”

He laughed. “For the sake to live until my next birthday, and your next birthday, I won’t.”

Still grinning, Lucas rummaged around in the pocket of his sweatpants and pulled out a candle and a lighter. Since Jens was holding onto the small cake as well, he was able to let go of it and place a candle in the middle. Carefully, he flickered the lighter and let it’s fire touch the candle’s wick, until a small flame emerged.

“Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you.” He sang softly. “Happy birthday dear Jens, happy birthday to you.”

And just as carefully, Jens closed his eyes for a second and made a wish. When he fluttered his eyes open again, he blew out the candle and Lucas clapped. Already prepared for the next step, he pulled out two forks from his other pocket and handed one to Jens.

“You seemed to have thought everything through.” Jens stated, before dipping his fork gently into the cake. He managed to grab a small chunk of the cake and scooped it into his mouth, his eyes lighting up again at the decadent flavour. “Luc! This is so good!”

“Thanks.” Lucas replied, before taking a little piece for himself. “It’s chocolate, your favourite.”

“And since you made it, it’s even more of my favourite.” He added, grabbing another piece. “It really must be my birthday, I don’t think I’d have cake for breakfast on any other day.”

“Really? That’s in tune with my philosophy.”

Jens let out a warm laugh as they continued to eat slices of cake. The sun slowly began to continue glowing through their window, making everything around them appear golden. Especially Jens’ dark brown eyes, which seemed to be liquid gold at this point. They both settled in the comfortable silence, a nice tranquil way to start of Jens’ birthday since later tonight it would probably end off with the both of them staggering home with attempts to not throw up everywhere.

“You know, if you ever open up a bakery, I’d make it my personal mission to make sure all your baked goods sell out at the end of the day.” Jens said.

Lucas smiled and rolled his eyes. “Well I can’t have you eating everything that’s meant for all the customers?”

“You’re right. How about instead you make a little bakery in our kitchen and I’ll be your only customer.”

“I can’t just have one customer.”

“Oh but you can have one very loyal customer.”

“How about I just keep you as my very loyal boyfriend who I will make treats for from time to time?”

“With that promise, I’d walk through the freezing cold for your ingredients any day.”

After they figured that eating an entire cake for breakfast probably wasn’t the best way to start the day, Lucas placed it gently on the night table beside the bed and took his familair space beside Jens. He instantly curled up into his side and Jens pulled him in closer, letting his hand trace up and down Lucas’ arm as he let himself feel calm amidst his surroundings. Curiously, Lucas lifted his head up and rested his chin on Jens’ chest, about to ask him a question.

“What did you wish for?” He asked, his blue eyes filled with curiosity.

He felt Jens snicker. “Well if I told you, it wouldn’t come true now would it?”

Lucas puffed some air out of his mouth. “Come on, tell me. What did you wish for?”

Jens pursed his lips for a second, as if he was hesitating and trying to rack his brain from some lie. But then after a few more seconds, he shrugged and looked at Lucas, his dark brown eyes filled with honesty.

“I didn’t wish for anything.”

Now feeling confused, Lucas tilted his head. “What? Why not?”

Shrugging again, Jens averted his gaze from Lucas to up to their ceiling. There was a small smile lifting up the corners of his mouth as he shyly let out a chuckle.

“I didn’t wish for anything because there’s nothing else I have to wish for.”

“I don’t understand.”

Turning his head back to face his boyfriend, Jens smiled at him in admiration.

“I didn’t have to wish for anything because the second I opened my eyes, I saw everything I have ever wanted.”

Feeling a growing warmth on his cheeks and between the both of them, Lucas snuggled in closer to Jens. Jens took his other arm and wrapped it around him, holding him tight.

“Jens?” Lucas mumbled against his chest. “There’s many more surprises that await you. If you want to get to them, we have to get up now.”

“In a few more minutes.” Jens suggested. “All I want right now is to be with you.”

Giggling, Lucas swiftly shuffled his body a bit and took a swipe of icing off the cake. Acting quickly, he placed it on Jens’ nose. Wrinkling it, Jens pretended to be annoyed but couldn’t let out a few giggles instead. Retaliating back, he gripped on Lucas tighter and rubbed his nose all over Lucas’ face. Lucas couldn’t contain all the laughter escaping him, filling the room and possible the flat with noises of euphoria and love. Jens began kissing all the places the icing that had landed on his face, which only made him giggle even louder.

“Jens! Jens!” He said through his fit of giggles as he tried to escape from Jens’ grasp. “You’re making me too ticklish and sticky with all this icing!”

For a second, Jens stopped his attack of kisses on his face and grinned. Taking a finger, he swiped some icing off his cheek and placed it on his mouth.

“I can’t help it.” He explained. “You Luc, are just the sweetest thing.”
