Thinking about Max today.

Thinking about how she is constantly rejected when we first meet her. How that’s a normal part of her life. How she expects it because she thinks of herself as unlikeable, a “jerk”. And then there’s Lucas.

Lucas, who is unflinchingly kind. Who talks to her when she’s so clearly unlikeable, unlovable, and yet he keeps showing up. Lucas who tells her his secrets and even though she doesn’t believe him he keeps trying so she plays along, spends an entire day fortifying a bus in a junk yard for some sort of game she isn’t really understanding.

Lucas who holds her hand when she’s scared. Lucas who musters all of his courage to ask her to dance.

Max is so guarded, so sure of her status as the worst person alive, but Lucas never ever lets her feel that way. So when she knows she must, knows she has to punish herself for how unforgivably awful she is, she pushes Lucas away so that he can’t keep seeing the good in her and refusing to let her forget.
