Lamb to slaughter

long post ahead!

so i just wanted to write a lil short story so here it is :3

It was a cloudy day. Light morning breeze carried a cold scent to it and blew a few raindrops to the lambs face.

It opened its eyes. It was confused at first because a big plate of food laid before it. But very quickly, joy replaced the confusion. It looked around and saw its siblings looking at it.

“My dear siblings, is this for me?” asked the lamb excitedly.

They were all silent for a while, but then one of them nodded. “Yes, all for you.”

The lamb's eyes widened. It didn't wait a second and started eating hungrily. Its sibling backed up a bit and started eating their own portions.

The lamb was the biggest out of the five. Everyone knew how it goes, except the lamb itself. The others didn't have the heart to tell it, until the ant came with a frown to the stall.

“What are you doing, little one?” it asked the lamb.

“Eating, can't you see?”

“But your plate has a lot more food.”

The lamb nodded. “I know.”

The ant looked at the lambs siblings who were shaking their heads fastly. But it ignored them. “Do you know what it means?”

The lamb stopped eating to think. “That I did something right?”

The ant sighed. “You stupid child! They want to eat you!”

“What? Who?”

“The humans! They want you to be all fat so they have more of you!”

The lamb backed away from the bowl. “But…how can you be sure?”

“Look at how much food they gave you! I also heard someone talk about it in the hut.”

The lamb's eyes widened, now in horror. “I have to run away!”

Its siblings who were hiding behind their plates until now came out objecting. “No! You have to face it!” If the lamb ran away, the humans would take one of them after all.

But the lamb knew the meaning behind the protests. “You want me to get eaten! But I will run away!” It turned to the small ant. “Do you know any ways?”

The ant shaked its head and turned to walk away. “No, but I heard the pig knows.”

The lamb quickly ran out of the stalls to the pig. “Pig! I heard that you know a way out into the world! Will you help me get out?”

The pig looked at it with narrowed eyes. “Why?”

“The humans want to eat me!”

“And why should I help you?”

The lamb blinks. “Ill…I'll get you anything you want!”

“Anything?”

“Yes, anything!”

The pig made a thinking sound. “Bring me all the food you got today.”

The lamb didn't think twice and ran as fast as it could. It came back with the bowl of food it woke up to and placed it in front of the pig. “Will you tell me the way now?”

The pig started eating as if it hadn't eaten the whole year and spoke with its mouth full. “There's a small hole in the west fence, but you'll have to ask dof to make it bigger for you.”

The lamb humphed but thanked and went to the dog. “Dog, please, will you help me run away?”

The dog moved its gaze from the neighbors to the lamb. “Huh? And why should I help you?”

“I'll do anything!”

The dog looked at the neighbors again. “Bring me the prettiest flower you'll find! Maybe the dog next door will like it.”

The lamb started searching. After a few minutes, it found a bright red rose. It came back and placed it in front of the dog. “Will you help me now?”

The dog nodded with a smile and hid the rose so no one would steal it while he was gone. “Yes, what do you need help with?”

“Can you make the hole bigger in the west fence?”

The dog nodded again. “Okay!”

It took only a few seconds to make the hole bigger. “Here you go. And wish me luck with the dog next door!”

The lamb ran out. “I will!”

The lamb ran through the forest, but it didn't take long for it to get lost. It found a bear. “Mr bear, will you help me find a way out of the forest?”

The bear looked at it and spoke in a deep voice. “And why should I help you?”

“I'll do anything!”

“Anything, huh? Hmm…Can you help me reach those berries?”

The lamb looked at the place the bear pointed at. “But I can't reach them either!”

“I'll lift you up,” explained the bear.

“Oh, okay!”

The lamb let the bear lift it up with its mouth and it took the branch with the berries between its teeth and then placed it in front of the bear. 

“Thank you, little one.”

“Will you help me now?”

The bear seemed to think for a while. Then, it smiles, its teeth covered in the red color of the berries. It looked a bit like blood. “Hmm…I could actually use some fresh meat.”

The lamb looked at the big bear fearfully before screaming in pain. 

Regardless of your experiences from the past,

              It's hard to know who to trust.

       And in the end

           does it really matter

        if you're eaten by a person

             or a bear?
