HOW TO WRITE A CHARACTER WHO IS IN PAIN

first thing you might want to consider: is the pain mental or physical?

if it’s physical, what type of pain is it causing? — sharp pain, white-hot pain, acute pain, dull ache, throbbing pain, chronic pain, neuropathic pain (typically caused by nerve damage), etc

if it’s mental, what is the reason your character is in pain? — grief, heartbreak, betrayal, anger, hopelessness, fear and anxiety, etc

because your character will react differently to different types of pain

PHYSICAL PAIN

sharp and white-hot pain may cause a character to grit their teeth, scream, moan, twist their body. their skin may appear pale, eyes red-rimmed and sunken with layers of sweat covering their forehead. they may have tears in their eyes (and the tears may feel hot), but they don’t necessarily have to always be crying.

acute pain may be similar to sharp and white-hot pain; acute pain is sudden and urgent and often comes without a warning, so your character may experience a hitched breathing where they suddenly stop what they’re doing and clench their hand at the spot where it hurts with widened eyes and open mouth (like they’re gasping for air).

dull ache and throbbing pain can result in your character wanting to lay down and close their eyes. if it’s a headache, they may ask for the lights to be turned off and they may be less responsive, in the sense that they’d rather not engage in any activity or conversation and they’d rather be left alone. they may make a soft whimper from their throat from time to time, depends on their personality (if they don’t mind others seeing their discomfort, they may whimper. but if your character doesn’t like anyone seeing them in a not-so-strong state, chances are they won’t make any sound, they might even pretend like they’re fine by continuing with their normal routine, and they may or may not end up throwing up or fainting).

if your character experience chronic pain, their pain will not go away (unlike any other illnesses or injuries where the pain stops after the person is healed) so they can feel all these types of sharp pain shooting through their body. there can also be soreness and stiffness around some specific spots, and it will affect their life. so your character will be lucky if they have caretakers in their life. but are they stubborn? do they accept help from others or do they like to pretend like they’re fine in front of everybody until their body can’t take it anymore and so they can no longer pretend?

neuropathic pain or nerve pain will have your character feeling these senses of burning, shooting and stabbing sensation, and the pain can come very suddenly and without any warning — think of it as an electric shock that causes through your character’s body all of a sudden. your character may yelp or gasp in shock, how they react may vary depends on the severity of the pain and how long it lasts.

EMOTIONAL PAIN

grief can make your character shut themself off from their friends and the world in general. or they can also lash out at anyone who tries to comfort them. (five states of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and eventual acceptance.)

heartbreak — your character might want to lock themself in a room, anywhere where they are unseen. or they may want to pretend that everything’s fine, that they’re not hurt. until they break down.

betrayal can leave a character with confusion, the feelings of ‘what went wrong?’, so it’s understandable if your character blames themself at first, that maybe it’s their fault because they’ve somehow done something wrong somewhere that caused the other character to betray them. what comes after confusion may be anger. your character can be angry at the person who betrayed them and at themself, after they think they’ve done something wrong that resulted in them being betrayed, they may also be angry at themself next for ‘falling’ for the lies and for ‘being fooled’. so yes, betrayal can leave your character with the hatred that’s directed towards the character who betrayed them and themself. whether or not your character can ‘move on and forgive’ is up to you.

there are several ways a character can react to anger; they can simply lash out, break things, scream and yell, or they can also go complete silent. no shouting, no thrashing the place. they can sit alone in silence and they may cry. anger does make people cry. it mostly won’t be anything like ‘ugly sobbing’ but your character’s eyes can be bloodshot, red-rimmed and there will be tears, only that there won’t be any sobbing in most cases.

hopelessness can be a very valid reason for it, if you want your character to do something reckless or stupid. most people will do anything if they’re desperate enough. so if you want your character to run into a burning building, jump in front of a bullet, or confess their love to their archenemy in front of all their friends, hopelessness is always a valid reason. there’s no ‘out of character’ if they are hopeless and are desperate enough.

fear and anxiety. your character may be trembling, their hands may be shaky. they may lose their appetite. they may be sweaty and/or bouncing their feet. they may have a panic attack if it’s severe enough.

and I think that’s it for now! feel free to add anything I may have forgotten to mention here!

I don't think fic writers know how much they matter

Do you know how many times you distracted me when I was hurt or lonely? Do you know how many times a line or a scene from fanfic marked me so much that I remembered years later, even though I can’t recall my own phone number? 

Even if the fic isn’t perfect or popular or multi-chaptered… Sometimes there’s just one sentence that changed me.

You, miles and miles away, changed me.

If reincarnation is real I wonder how many people stare at their own art in museums, listen to their own music they made in a different life and read books they don't remember writing

The viscount and his maid part 3 is being currently written🫣 just wanted to let everyone know I will be rewriting some parts of chapters 1 and 2 so that they can align with the plot I’m trying to go for 🦔

PLSSS I love long long fanfiction that I can just sit and read like a book and truly yours read exactly like one!!!

My favourite parts (I have a few 🤭) were definitely the very first time they kissed- THE TENSION OMG - it’s like you can feel how this man has been holding back and longing for the mc and I GASPED it was so amazing and my heart broke when mc pulled away 😭😭😭 like yes PLEASE break my heart more !!!!

Obviously, any of the Rex scenes because I am such a sucker for my man’s, even if he wasn’t the love interest I was still like ‘YOU TELL THEM REX!!!’ I just loved his appearances and also the other clowns like Echo and Fives and Kix and so on, they added on so much to the story and I’m so glad how you chose to let them live because omg my heart would crumble if they were gone😭😭😭

The descriptions of the mc being shot… and how Jesse felt when he saw it happen, once again I love love love angst and seeing his emotions and getting a look into his thoughts was just the Cherry on top for me 😭💕💕💕

And definitely where they were putting the clay masks on!!! It was soooo sweet and so domestic and perfect and everything that Jesse deserves 😭😭😭it had me giggling and kicking my feet whilst voice noting my best friend squealing and saying how much I love this 😭😭😭💕

Once again thank you so much for writing and sharing this masterpiece I will be coming back to it to reread because it’s just so goooood 😭💕💕💕

I’ve spent the last 2 hours reading this and omg was the wait so worth it. For a 26,000 word story it went by so fast it felt like I was watching a movie and oh my goodness-

DID I CRY DID I LAUGH DID I GASP AT ALL THOSE AMAZING HEARTWRENCHING SCENES.

I’m not a book critic or a fanfic critic but I’m definitely a writing enjoyer and this has been so amazing, waiting for this to come out has paid off and the author did such an amazing job, the only complaint I have is that I wish it was LONGER because I could not get enough of this story it was so amazing!!!!🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 one of the few Jesse fanfics around , and one of the very best in my opinion 💕💕💕💕 my best friend can vouch for all the voice notes of me crying squealing going ‘what the fuck’ at every twist and turn in the plot !!!! I love this so much I need it imbedded and tattooed onto my brain right now🦔💕💕💕💕💕 thank you so much for sharing your talent with us @ladyanidala your writing is truly amazing ❤️❤️❤️ I aspire to write such an amazing story as you one day🦔💕💕💕

Should I do a small followers celebration? Like writing small prompts from readers for all the fandoms I write for as a thank you? 🦔

I haven’t been able to write recently as I’ll be going abroad to see family (so aka working a lot more) but hopefully I’ll be able to get some writing done on the plane 🦔

I accidentally deleted this post (what's up with tumblr not asking you to confirm it???), so I'm posting it again! (I'm stupid and was trying to do things too quickly 😅

“Where do you think you’re going?”

Rex sighed, his shoulders drooping slightly as he turned to face you. “I have to go, mesh’la,” he explained. “Echo and Gregor called; they’ve got new information about where the clones are being kept. This could be the breakthrough we’ve been waiting for.”

“And you were just going to sneak out without so much as a ‘see ya later, mesh’la’,” you frowned, dropping your voice into a poor imitation of his. “No, you’ll just go and disappear again.” 

“Mesh’la, you know I have to go when I’m called - we talked about this,” he pointed out, scowling.

“You talked, Rex. You did,” you scoffed, your arms crossing over your chest protectively. “You told me all about your responsibilities to your brothers.”

“Exactly, I-”

“What about your responsibilities to me?”

Rex couldn’t answer that. He had his arms chained to your house and his legs to a gunship. At least, that’s how it felt. The hurt hiding behind anger in your voice was tearing him in half.

Your hands dropped to your sides as you finally broke the eye contact you’d been bewitching him with. “I can’t keep having the same argument. I’m never going to be a priority for you, am I?” you said, quickly holding up one hand to add “you know what? You don’t have to answer that.”

You didn’t need to look back up at him to know his gaze was still locked on you; sad, brown eyes taking in each of your movements. 

Rex stood silently watching as you closed the distance between you. Barely looking at him, you pressed a soft kiss to his cheek. 

“Take care of yourself, Rex,” you whispered, flashing a brief, forced smile that didn’t reach your eyes. “And your brothers.”

With that, you turned back towards your door, letting the tears that had been building up behind your eyes finally fall down your cheeks. You swiped at them with your arm as you closed your door behind you. 

Outside, Rex stopped breathing. Simultaneously - somehow - he couldn’t process what had just happened and was processing it all a little too much. 

He couldn’t hear his comm’s repeated pinging, signaling Echo’s arrival on-world. He could only hear your voice, sad, angry, disappointed - sad about him, angry with him, disappointed in him. 

It didn’t take long for his well-used military training to kick in; two casualties, but the mission must continue. 

He fit his helmet over his head, refusing to allow anyone to see the tears stinging his eyes.
