The bells to your mothers' chicken shop rung around as three young men walked in, making their presence all the more known as they exclaimd a loud greeting, waiting at the door to be led to their table.
Your head rose up from behind the counter, looking the trio over. You knew one of them; he'd often frequented the small restaurant with some university classmates. But never with the other two men.
The frequent customer often dyed his hair. The first time you saw him, he had black hair, the next time brown hair, and recently he's kept it an ashy blonde. It fell over his forehead lightly, the tips just touchig his eyebrows. His dark brown eyes glinted under the light, and his skin glowed.
He must have amazing skin care.
The other two, who were looking around curiously, were both much taller. One had pitch-black hair, a button nose and a bunny smile, whilst the other had dark brown hair, a little mole under his eye, and a charming, husky voice.
"Y/n! Stop staring and go greet them!" Your mom's voice rung out from the kitchen, though only you and two other staff seemed to hear her.
With a bright red face, you huffed, straightening out your apron as you approached the trio, just barely missing bumping into another customer. Muttering a quick apology, you scooted away and finally reached them.
Okay Y/n, smile!
"Hi guys! Welcome to our restaurant, what can I help you with today?" You asked in a sickly sweet voice, flashing a small smile their way.
My voice is way too high.
"Oh hi Y/n, we just wanted a table for three? My friends here have never been here before," Jimin said, brushing his hair out of his face, "I can't have them missing out on your mom's amazing cooking." He stated, flashing a charming smile that crinkled his eyes into crescents.
Although your face had calmed down and lost its' colour, you could feel a dusty flush overcoming your cheeks as you reciprocated the smile.
"Ah no thank you so much, I'll make sure to tell that to her," You laughed, twiddling with your apron, "Come, we've got the perfect spot for the three of you." You continued, signalling for them to follow.
You led them to a wooden table just in the corner of the restaurant, it had a nice view to the sea, but was far enough from the kitchen for them to not hear whatever your mom says. Thankfully.
As the three sat down, you excused yourself with a quick 'I'll go grab you the menus', and made your way to the counter, releasing a deep huff of air.
"Well? Did any of them catch your eye?" Your mother's voice whispered into your ear, and you jumped at the sudden proximity.
With a roll of your eyes, you scolded, "Mom, you can't sneak up on me like that."
"Fine, but? Are any of them handsome?"
"Of course they're handsome! Jimin said they're missing out on your 'amazing cooking'." You said with a grin, snatching three menus from the counter before you skirted away, sending your mom a thumbs-up as she told you to thank him.
As you approached their table, the Jimin and the brown haired male were teasing the third, their laughter echoing around the restaurant. It was loud anyway as a couple other customers were around, all enjoying their meals and company.
Today was one of the busier day's for the small restaurant.
"Well, there you go, just ring this bell once you're ready to order your drinks or meals." You said with a smile, leaning a bit over the table as you handed the menus out to them, earning quiet 'thank you's'.
But before you could go, Jimin's voice stopped you.
"Y/n, I just wanted to introduce these two. If they're smart, they'll become frequents like me." He said, smiling softly as he looked up at you.
"Oh? Go on then."
"This is Kim Taehyung, he's younger than me but still older than you." Jimin said, nodding his head towards Taehyung, the brunette with the cute smile and mole.
"And that's Jungkook, our 'Golden Maknae', he's the youngest. I think you're the same age as him, twenty, right?" He asked, unsure as he thought. You confirmed with a nod and a smile, waving lightly at Jungkook.
A small blush dusted his cheeks, and he grinned at you with a toothy smile.
"Yeah, my birthday's in October," You paused, looking at Jungkook, "When's yours?" Before he could reply, Taehyung cut in.
"Woah, you're finally older than someone? You're no longer the Maknae!" He said, teasing him as he pinched Jungkook on the cheek. With a roll of his eyes, Jungkook smiled, before punching Taehyung on the shoulder.
Jimin, seeing the situation unfolding, scolded them.
"Stop acting like children in front of Y/n! You're gonna get us kicked out!" He yelled, leaning over the table to separate the two. You laughed at the scene, and shook your head.
"Well then, you can summon me just by ringing the bell, alright?" You said, slowly turning away as Jimin thanked you.
As you walked further away, you could hear Taehyung continuing to tease, but this time the target was Jimin.
"You just don't want us to embarass you in front of Y/n!" He exclaimed, and as your head snapped back at the mention of your name, you saw Jimin slapping a hand over Taehyung's mouth. "Shut it!"
As you reached the counter, you could no longer hide your smile. Quickly hiding behind it, you reached for your phone, immediately going to text your best friend; Hana.
She received all the juicy details about Jimin and other handsome guys, and she'd often encourage you to ask for his number.
Hana! You won't believe what just happened! [Delivered]
It took her two minutes to see the message, but once she did, the two of you typed away.
What? Don't tell me it's about Jimin again. [Read at 17:02]
Wdym again?! I never talk about him. [Read 17:03]
Anyway, he came and brought two of the hottest guys I've ever seen. I mean, where do these men keep spawning from?! Why can't there be some like that at our school?! [Read 17:04]
You typed away with a big grin on your face, occasionally looking up to make sure that there weren't any customers waiting on you.
What's their names? I bet I'll find them with sonic speed. [Read 17:06]
One's called Taehyung, the other is Jungkook, I'm sure they follow each other on Insta or smth. [Read 17:06]
The sound of a bell ringing caught your attention, and you looked over to the direction of the sound. Jimin was waving you over, Taehyung and Jungkook leaning over to see where you'd be coming from.
Quickly shoving your phone into your pocket, you grabbed a small notepad and a pen, before walking over to them.
"Well? Have you decided what you wanna eat?" You asked, readying your pen and paper.
The three looked up at you, before Jimin looked at Taehyung and Jungkook, urging them to say their orders.
"Can I just have some Sprite? As well as the uhm- the spicy rice cakes, and some pickled radish?" Taehyung asked, taking pauses in between as he looked over the menu, his eyebrows scrunched up in thought.
"Spicy rice cakes, radish and Sprite." You repeated softly, scribbling down the order. As you looked up, you noticed Taehyung and Jimin exchanging glances.
"Could I also have Sprite, pickled radish and the six piece bucket?" Jungkook asked, his pointer finger showing you the items he wanted. You leaned in closer, looking at the menu even though you had heard him perfectly well. As he was the closest, you could feel his shoulder brush slightly against your arm as you scribbled.
"Yup, got that. And for you, Jimin?" You asked, looking at him. Jimin cleared his throat and without hesitation, stated his usual order - a fried chicken bucket for three, some Cola and a vegetable stir fry.
With a nod, you repeated their orders, ensuring that it was all correct before you began to collect the menu's, the trio thanking you.
As Jungkook was passing you his menu, your hands brushed against each other.
At first your mind didn't register it, but when it did, you flinched, whisking your hand away from his touch.
With a gasp, you looked over your hand, noticing nothing unusual.
"Are you alright?" Jimin asked, and as you looked up, you saw their confused faces, though Jungkooks was more shocked, his eyes widened.
"Y-Yeah, I'm fine," You quickly reassured, nodding your head before turning to Jungkook, "But goddamn, your hand is boiling. Are you sure you don't have a fever?" You asked, pressing a hand to Jungkooks forehead before you could think.
His forehead was much cooler than his hand, but it quickly began to flush under your touch.
"I-I'm fine, sorry about that." He said quickly, looking anywhere but at you as his cheeks reddened.
Your eyes widened, and you quickly retracted your hand.
"I'm very sorry! I didn't mean to do that- w-well I did but I wasn't thinking!" You apologised, feeling your own face flush as you bowed at Jungkook, holding the menus and notepad in your hand.
He placed one hand on your arm, "Please don't apologise, it's okay!" He exclaimed, trying to stop you from bowing any longer. As you raised your head, you excused yourself and made your way back towards the counter, feeling the warmth in your cheeks with the back of your hand.
Shaking your head, you called out the orders to your mom and another kitchen staff, before you hid behind the counter once again.
You took your phone out, only to see that Hana had bombarded you with tons of messages.
I FOUND THEM!!!!! NEITHER OF THEM HAVE A GF?!!!?!?!!? [Delivered 17:10]
Y/n you won't believe it... They know Yoongi.. [Delivered 17:12]
Y/n? Where are youuuuu come backkkkk we need to talk!!! [Delivered 17:15]
You sighed, rubbing your face with your hands. You knew it was too good to be true. Of course they had some connection to Yoongi. Your... Ex-boyfriend.
For the remainder of the time, you stayed behind the counter, occasionally emerging to accept payments or to bring out dishes.
Although Jimin and his friends were lovely and chatty, you could only muster up a faint smile as you had brought them their food, quickly walking away as they thanked you. You didn't want to get your hopes up, not that there was any indication of them being interested, but being friends with Yoongi already crossed you off of their lists, as according to the 'Bro-code'.
Most customers had left by 7pm, as the restaurant would be closing at 8 this evening. Only the trio had stayed until 7:30, long after they had finished eating. Their conversations were full of banter and laughter, but closer to the end they had dimmed, all three huddled closer as they strainly discussed something.
You had been wiping the tables when someone tapped you on the shoulder.
It was Taehyung, grinning down at you with a pretty, boxy smile.
"Is it alright if we pay now?" He asked and you nodded, saying you'd be there with the card machine in a moment. "Ah, no, could I pay at the counter? I wanna pay for the other two, but you know what elders are like." He insisted, and you immediately knew what he meant by 'elders' - Jimin.
He wouldn't be too pleased about not being able to pay.
With a nod of your head, you finished wiping the table and lead Taehyung to the counter, the male following closely behind.
"So, what did you tell Jimin? I'm sure he wouldn't be letting you pay now if he knew." You asked as you rounded the table, your fingers tapping on the computer screen to total up their order.
"I said I'm ordering more food." Taehyung admitted with a smile, leaning his arms on the countertop, eyes looking up at you through long, thick lashes.
You smiled knowingly and nodded, looking in the direction of the other two. Jimin and Jungkook were engaged in conversation, but either way they wouldn't be able to hear yours and Taehyung's conversation from this distance over the radio.
"Well, the total comes to โฉ25,000. Will you be paying by cash or card?" You asked, looking to Taehyung.
Your face reddened as you realised the close proximity between the two of you. He either had no sense of personal space or he really enjoyed teasing people.
"Card please." Taehyung stated, standing to his full height as he took his wallet out, looking for his card. As he fished it out, he looked at you, without a smile or a laugh.
Nothing.
It was a bit tense.
And then that smile returned as he spoke, tapping the card on the payment machine.
"You have really pretty eyes, did you know that?" He asked, his gaze flicking from yours to the card machine, checking if his payment had gone through.
Before you could stop yourself, your face had flushed a bright pink. Nobody had ever said that to you, unless we ignore Yoongi, but he didn't matter in that moment.
"Thank you so much I- I don't know what to say." Fanning your face, you laughed out loud, smiling up at him. "You have really pretty eyes too, they're so big and I love the colour."
"Oh yeah? Wanna see them up close?" He asked, leaning over the counter, his face just mere inches from yours. His eyes were a colour darker than a sequoia tree, his eyelashes long and lucious, though you noticed how one of his eyes had a monolid, whereas the other didn't.
He stared into your eyes, though his gaze flickered between them and your lips, and at that, you felt your stomach twist, cheeks flush and palms become clammy.
"Yeah, you're really pretty Mr Taehyung-"
"Yah Taehyung! What did you do?! Jimin's voice called out, and the two of you broke the trance you were in, looking in Jimin's direction. Both him and Jungkook had gotten up, their school bags and coats in their hands.
"Don't tell me that you paid." Jimin continued, walking over to the counter, Jungkook in tow.
"I'm sorry Jimin, he insisted." You said, sending Taehyung a cheeky smile as he looked at you, hand over his chest, mouth agape. Tutting, he raised a brow at you, "I can't believe you'd betray me like that Y/n!" He exclaimed, shaking his head. At that, you let out a laugh, waving him off.
"It's okay, I'm sure Jimin isn't too angry."
"Oh angry? I'm not angry, I'm furious!" Jimin said, resting his arm on Taehyung's shoulder, his eyebrows scrunched up cutely.
"Hyung, it's okay. I insisted on paying, okay? And anyway, it gave me more time to talk to our lovely Y/n." He said, smiling your way. You shook your head, raising your eyebrows as you looked elsewhere, anywhere really, to avoid embarrassment.
Your gaze locked with that of Jungkook, his wide, almost black eyes staring into yours. He had a certain look on his face, which you couldn't quite decypher. He was observing you through droopy eyes, his teeth chewing on his bottom lip.
"Anyway, I guess we'll be going now." Jimin's voice snapped your attention back, and your head turned in his direction. "I think we've overstayed our welcome, you normally close around 8, right?" He asked, putting his coat on.
"Ah, no no, normally we shut at 10, but today we opened so early that my mom needs an early night." You replied, smiling at him. You looked at the counter, reaching for a specific draw.
You took out six cherry flavoured candies.
"Thank you for coming, I hope I'll see all three of you soon." You said, selecting two candies as you passed them to Jimin.
"Oh, you really don't have to-"
"Oh yes I do, you're a regular, and I think my mom would skin me alive if she found I didn't give these to you." You insisted, grabbing at his hand as you placed the candy in his palm before folding his fingers over it.
"Taehyung, Jungkook, I hope you two like cherry flavoured candy." You said as you reached out for their hands, placing two candies into Taehyungs open palm, also folding his fingers over it. With Jungkooks hand, you were more careful, afraid that they were still as scorching hot as earlier. Though they weren't, and your touch lingered on his for a moment longer than needed as you patted his enclosed fingers.
"Thank you, again, for coming. I hope to see you guys soon, take care." You spoke with a soft smile, and the trio thanked you as they made their way to the door. One by one, they left, though Taehyung made a point to send you a cute smile and a 'call me' hand sign, before Jimin's hand pulled at his collar and out of your sight.
For a moment, you were swallowed by silence, and then small footsteps came from the kitchen. Your mom and one more kitchen staff had probably just finished tidying up.
"So... How did it go?" Your mom's voice could be heard behind you, and you turned to face her. She leaned against the doorframe, her arms crossed over her chest as she smiled softly.
"I have no idea what you're on about!" You exclaimed, rolling your eyes as you half smiled, hands reaching for some disinfectant and a wipe. You rounded the counter and headed towards the last table that you had yet to clean.
"I think they'd make handsome babies!" Your mom called out after you and headed back into the kitchen, her laugh ringing out.
With a sigh, you picked up the leftover cutlery and dishes, leaving them on the counter to clean, before you busied yourself with the table. The boys had barely left anything to clean.
Later that night, you had found yourself tossing and turning in your bed, huffing loudly in your sleep.
You had been plagued by the same nightmare for a couple of months now; the crimson, starving eyes.
It was a picture that replayed in your mind each night, and each time you'd wake up with a gasp, your heart beating at your chest, lungs heaving in and out, a trickle of sweat rolling down your temple. At first it was just the crimson pupils, but it soon turned into a proper haunting creature, with elongated arms, sharp, unkempt claws, and a salivating snout.
Tonight was no different.
You woke up with a startle, chest heaving up and down as you kicked your feet, a small yelp escaping your lips.
You scrambled backwards, arms reaching behind to turn your night light on, eyes fixated on the space in front of you; convinced that the creature was real and had made its way into your room.
As the light flooded the space, your kicking eased. There was no nightmarish canine reaching for you, only your cat Nugget, Nug for short, laying on his fortress in the corner of your room.
"Fuck..." You muttered, rubbing your face with your hand. You reached for your phone, checking the time.
7:35AM
The white numbers glared at you unforgivingly. Uni didn't start until 11AM, so you had enough time to calm down and chill in your bed before you had to even think about showering. You were fine with that.
With a sigh, you unplugged your phone, immediately going to text Hana.
Maybe she too was up.
I doubt it.
I might need you to find me some sort of Tarot reader or idk, the nightmare was even worse tonight. I'm shitting my pants. [Delivered 7:37AM]
With another sigh, you leaned back into your pillows, going onto Instagram to scroll through your feed. There was nothing new really, only a few celebs posting some promotions, ads, pictures of their holidays. Your peers didn't post all that much, and neither did you.
Though a small red dot at the little heart icon caught your attention.
Did someone like my post?
Nope, it was just another meaningless follow recommendation.
"Nug, come here kitty." You said quietly, patting the space next to you. The feline's ears perked up, and it slowly got up, stretching in the process before it laid back down with its back turned to you.
How kind.
You laid like this for another half an hour or so, watching a new netflix show. After, you went downstairs, knowing your mom and brother would be awake, getting ready to go to school. School started at 8:45, so they had plenty of time to eat, get dressed and get into the car.
As you went down the stairs, Nug in tow, the gentle hum of the TV calmed your nerves. Lee was laying on the couch, munching on some cereal as he watched a kids show. You could hear your mom scrambling about in the kitchen, muttering to herself. She was probably cleaning after her breakfast.
"Morning," You said to Lee, seating yourself on the couch as your hand reached for a nearby blanket.
"Mornin'." Lee replied, glancing over to you, before he looked back at the TV. He was watching some old cartoon on Youtube; Moomin Valley. The characters were on some kind of adventure, but you quickly tuned them out as Nugget made his way onto your lap, meowing.
"What? You wanna eat?" You cooed at the cat, heavily stroking his head. The tabby nuzzled his nose into your hand, giving small kitten licks to your palm.
"Fine, fine. Come on." You said, getting up from the couch. As you passed Lee, you ruffled his hair, earning an annoyed groan from the child. "Do you really have to do that every morning?" He asked, smacking at your hand.
Ignoring him, you headed to the kitchen. Glancing at your mom, you opened a cupboard, grabbing a packet of wet cat food.
"Ooo, chicken flavour today Nug." You said, earning yourself a meow.
"Y/n, don't tease the cat so early in the morning." Your mom groaned, leaning against the kitchen counter as she took a sip of her coffee.
You walked over to Nug's eating station, and ripped the packet open. The clumpy, jelly meat pieces fell into the bowl with a 'plonk', Nug's pointed eyes watching curiously. He knew better than to try eating whilst you were preparing the food.
"Good morning to you too, mom." You said, sarcasm lacing your tone as you smiled.
You stumbled slightly as she kicked your butt jokingly, grunting. She truly hated waking up early, though Lee had no issue with it. You inherited that trait from her.
"Are you going straight to work after you drop Lee off?" You asked, discarding the now empty food packet into the bin. You walked towards your mom, opening another cabinet before taking out a mug. Your hand quickly swatted at the kettle, feeling it was hot enough to make a cup of tea.
With a hum, you reached to a box filled with teabags, black tea to be specific, and popped it into your mug, pouring hot water over it. Perfect.
That'll calm your nerves.
"Did you have another nightmare again?" Your mom asked, her tone serious, but still laced with grogginess as she placed her coffee down. You nodded your head, hand reaching for some sugar.
One teaspoon, two teaspoons, three..
"I think you should go get it checked out. It isn't normal." She continued, turning her head to the side, looking out the window. You sighed, nodding your head. You stirred the sugar into the liquid, before you lifted the teabag, flicking it into the sink. You moved to the fridge, taking out a milk carton.
"I know, I asked Hana to find me some tarot reader or whatever, maybe they know what's up."
"Y/n! You know what I mean, don't you?" She asked, slight annoynce in her voice as she brought her coffee up to her lips again.
"Mom, I don't need a psychiatrist for this. What are they gonna do? Psychoanalyse me? Tell me that it's because of the divorce?" You raised your voice, this time angrily slamming the milk carton on the countertop.
Nugget jumped in surprise, looking up at you as he let out a single 'Meow?'.
Your mom shook her head, moving away from the counter with coffee cup in hand.
Your heart dropped, and you instantly felt awful. You knew she was just trying to help, but you just didn't need the help. The nightmares weren't bad enough for you to need a psychiatrist, and you also felt that sleeping pills would only prevent you from waking up and escaping the nightmare.
"I'm sorry mom, I just- I can figure it out. On my own." You insisted, but only received an 'alright' in reply as she disappeared round the corner, heading for the living room.
You sighed, crouching down to pet Nug as the feline finished his breakfast.
"I've got this, don't I Nug?" You questioned as the cat licked its snout, his alien-green eyes boring into yours. "I wonder if you understand anything I say."
At that, he meowed in confirmation.
The next three hours went by quickly. You had taken a needed shower, washed your hair, threw some clothes on and got walking to uni.
The walk was uphill, and passed through a pretty neighbourhood. Though it was quite a distance from the beach, you could still see some water in the faraway distance.
A couple of fellow students headed the same way as you, but your friend Hana was coming from the complete opposite direction, so your walk was lonely.
Until your phone rang and her name showed on your lockscreen in bold white letters.
"Hana? Why are you calling so early?" You asked, yawning as you felt fatigue wash over you.
"Y/n! You didn't answer your texts? Y'know, you had me worried." Her voice chirped over the phone, it was a complete contrast to your own mood.
"I know- I'm sorry. I was exhausted and I don't know... I fell asleep as soon as I got into bed." You sighed, looking up you saw one of the first uni buildings ahead. "But, I didn't tell you. So, the Taehyung guy literally flirted with me; he said I had pretty eyes. Pretty eyes Hana!" You exclaimed, giggling as you recalled the event.
"Flirted? Girl, he was all over you what the fuck? Did he do anything else?" She asked excitedly, and you could almost see her jumping up and down like an excited child.
"Well~ We basically almost... Kissed! And he wanted me to give him a call!"
"What?! No way! You're actually making that up. Did you record it?" She asked.
"Of course not, idiot, but he didn't actually give me his number." You facepalmed, remembering that Jimin and his friend had interrupted you before things could escalate.
Hana groaned, muttering something about 'having to find his number', but your gaze focused on the pavement in front of you. Your legs came to a slow stop as someone came into view. Dressed in all black, with a cap and a hoodie over it, he leaned against a streetlamp, arms crossed.
"Y/n? Hello? Are you there?" Hana's voice echoed in your ears, and with a quick inhale, you shook your head, continuing on walking.
"Yes, yes. Sorry, did you say something?" You asked, blinking away your confusion.
"Just something about having found that mysterious Taehyung's phone number..." She dragged on, and your heart jumped, lodging itself in your throat.
"Y-You what?" You asked, stuttering. You glanced over at the figure, feeling goosebumps rise on your skin.
"I found-"
"Y/n, can we talk?" A familiar voice asked just as you passed him, one clothed arm reaching out to take a hold of yours.
Your stomach twisted, hands grew clammy.
Your heart paused, sliding down from your throat back into your chest. Awfully slowly at that.
His familiar perfume flooded your nostrils, the scent resembling the smell of pine needles and cedar trees, those late nights spent in his arms, sweet murmurs and honeyed whispers flooded your mind.
"Y/n? Is that Yoongi?"
"Hana, I'll talk to you later..." You said quietly, gaze never leaving his as you lowered your phone.
"Y/n? What's going-" The sound of the call being ended reached your ears, and you tucked your phone away into your pocket.
His gummy smile didn't quite reach his eyes, and by the way his shoulders tensed up, by the way his eyes flickered slightly to the side, you could tell he didn't want to be anywhere near you.
"What do you want?" Your voice was quiet, eyes looking up at his with a sharp glare.
"I just need five minutes of your time," He paused, kicking a lonely little stone, "It's about Taehyung."

Hello again! After some more work, the survey is now online. You can find it under this link: https://www.soscisurvey.de/darkfic2023/.
I am writing my bachelor thesis on the topic of reading dead dove/darkfics, mental health and personality. As part of this thesis, I am conducting this survey.
Everyone above the age of 18 can take part in this study (yes, even if you don't read dead dove, even if you don't read fanfiction at all, control groups are important).
Please reblog this post, share the link on other platforms, send it to your friends and mutuals, include it in your authors note if you want. The survey is open at least until the 31.12.2023 and maybe even longer, depending on how many participants I have.
Tagging everyone who once upon a time expressed interest in this study when i was floating around the idea on my main blog:

Pink waves grasped at the sand, their back and forth swishing easing your nerves.
You were at the beach, with your love, your husband, Finnick Odair.
It had been a couple of months at this point, after the Capitol was overthrown and President Snow was no longer. Though the Capitol was gone and all citizens of Panem had seemingly integrated into one, equal society, the scars and marks that you had been left with did not go away as easily.
When you had arrived at District 13, you could barely utter a word, barely look up from your wounded palms. It had taken Finnick just over a month to get you to look at him, to let him hold you, and even more to get you to speak. But when you did, he cried of joy. He had asked you carefully if he could embrace you, and kiss you.
The Capitol did not only take away your voice, but they took much more than that. Your love for the seas.
You remember it vividly; eyes covered by a mask until you only saw darkness, the electrified currents rushing through your muscles, tightening the tissue like a rope. All the while all that your ears could register were your pleading, muffled screams, along with the sound of waves crashing agains the shoreline.
It was all that haunted your nightmares for the next year or so, coming back with dripping fingers, taking you deep down into the void.
When you were rescued, you had to be sedated in fear of becoming a danger to everyone else.
Quickly after waking up, you had been informed that Peeta had brutally attacked Katniss, strangling her to near death. You understood his actions and what drove him to them, and you wished that the young boy would recover quickly, although now you were well aware that these kinds of scars will never truly heal, never fully disappear.
Lost deep in thought, you failed to notice how Finnick's muscular arms wrapped tightly around you, his chin resting on your shoulder as he nuzzled his nose into your neck.
His deep, hushed voice whispered, "What are you thinking, my love?" It never failed to send a pleasurable chill down your spine. Melting into his embrace, your eyes fluttered shut, your head leaning to his.
"Just... About the water," You paused, releasing a soft sigh, "It looks so calm, so safe, and yet I'm still so, so afraid."
You felt Finnick's fingers feeling the soft material of your sundress, rubbing it between the pads of his fingers.
His voice was soothing, dripping with sweetness as he spoke, "We can go back, love. You don't have to do this."
You shook your head. "I need to do this."
He nodded his head, slightly lifting his head to place a kiss on your cheek, his hands caressing your waist. He then slowly let go, one of his hands travelling to your shoulder, then down your arm until his fingers interlocked with yours, fitting perfectly like a key in a lock.
"Let's get this over and done with then."
You smiled softly, though it didn't quite reach your eyes.
You stood a good couple of feet away from where the water met the sand, and yet your heart was still rattling like a wild bird in a small cage.
Finnick was trying something called 'Exposure Therapy' on you, as suggested by a doctor from 13. It involved you and the water. It took you a long while to be okay with showers, however the bathtub was not an option. That was something you couldn't overcome in your short time in the hospital.
Though now, as Finnick encouraged you to face your deepest nightmares, you felt grateful to at least be able enough to listen to and to watch the waves.
It used to be your most favourite thing to do in the world, and Snow took it away with just a lift of his finger.
Eyes heavily trained on the water, your mind had gone blank. Your lips slowly opened, stuttering over complete silence. You heard Finnick chuckle, and felt his body shake. He turned wholly to you, placing his free hand on your cheek, gazing into your eyes lovingly.
"I'm here, love. We're in District 4, standing on our favourite beach, watching the sea." Finnick said slowly, voice hushed as his eyes searched yours. "As long as I'm around you'll always be protected, always be safe." He continued, placing a tender kiss to your lips, and you leaned in, butterflies fluttering around in your stomach.
As the two of you parted, you nodded your head lightly, gaze never leaving his.
A soft smile stretched across his face, his teeth gently peering through the gap between his lips. His dimples were also peering through, and you felt the urge to touch his face, to feel his skin on yours.
"Now, we'll go into the water, is that okay?" He asked, but you didn't respond. You didn't nod or shake your head, you didn't utter a single word. All you could do was swallow down your fear, and shakily grip his hand.
Finnick's free hand came to hold the side of your face again, his own face coming closer and closer, until your foreheads touched and your eyes were closed, listening intently to the sound of the waves, the sound of his voice.
"I've got you darling. You're safe." He continued, and pressed another kiss to your lips. Your grip on his hand tightened, and your free hand travelled up to his hair, gliding through the golden locks, down to his cheek.
Your hand caressed his sun-kissed skin. You didn't open your eyes, and instead squinted them shut as you felt the fear creeping up your bones.
"Look at me honey, I need you to show me that you know you're safe." He says, nudging your nose with his. "I'm gonna be with you every step of the way darling. With me around you ain't got nothing to be afraid of." He whispered softly, his hand squeezing yours back as he took two steps back, pulling on your hand.
Your eyes fluttered open, and you could feel your breath beginning to hitch as you moved two steps forward.
You could feel your heart stop for a moment, before it began to hammer again. With a deep breath, you nod your head.
"You'll keep me safe, Finn."
At that, the corners of his lips curled upwards, his dimples coming back. You trailed closely to him, leaving an arm's length between your bodies.
The sand beneath your feet was soft, still dry as you trudged forward, coming closer and closer to the foamy, pink waves. You slowly looked up, and with laboured breaths, you noticed how pretty the cloudy sky was.
The rising sun casted a candy cotton colour to the skies. The rays gently grasped at the horizon, and you stumbled for a moment, your breathing calming as a light breeze took a hold of your hair, pulling it as it went past you.
A soft smile appeared on your lips, and you felt a snap of confidence rush through your veins. In the corner of your eye, you saw Finnick turning back to look at you, his small footsteps coming to a stop as he allowed you to absorb the beauty of the morning sky, his eyes softening at the sight.
You looked to him, grinning a toothy smile as you gave his hand a tight squeeze. With a nod of your head, Finnick began moving again, tugging you towards the water, his warm hand embracing yours.
At first, you only felt the tame licks of coolness against your feet. The confidence you felt quickly evaporated.
You felt terrified, heart pounding against your chest with a long-known fervor, but you also felt the smallest bit of comfort.
It reminded you of how you and Finnick would run into the water, swim into the unknown depths without a single bit of fear. Back when you were kids, back when you were safe from the ghastly tentacles of the Hunger Games.
Now, as you stood there, your mind was at war. More water began lapping at your feet, dragging soggy sand over your skin lazily.
"Is this okay?" Finnick's soft voice ripped through the air, and you looked up, seeing how he was standing over you protectively, hands ready to lift you effortlessly and get away from the sea. His golden locks bounced in the sea breeze, the sun shone behind him, highlighting his honeyed skin.
"Y-yes, it feels... Strange. But I can stand it." Your voice was merely a whisper, and it tugged heavily at Finnick's heartstrings. He looked you over, noting how gorgeous you were in your white sundress, miniature sunflower patterns decorating the entirty of the fabric. Your feet had dug deep into the sand beneath, your legs frozen still, unmoving.
"Can you go any further?" His voice was sweet, steady and full of love. You nodded your head, but struggled to move. Finnick took note of this, and his arm easily wrapped around your waist, guiding you forward. "We can stop at any point, just give me a sign."
The more steps you took, the more numb your limbs became. The water was cold, freezing cold. The sand mostly smooth, though a couple round stones and seashells dug into the soft skin of your feet, lessening as you walked further into the sea, the water rising gradually.
It's when the two of you reached far enough for the water to lap at the hem of your dress that you singalled for Finnick to stop. The waves were much larger, swaying your bodies upwards, but they were also much gentler at this distance. A blanket of darkness enveloped you, and you felt a trickle of sweat falling down the side of your forehead, numerous shivers going down your spine.
Your breath stuttered, and your eyes focused on the water, your muscles cramping.
Finnick stood behind you, placing his warm hands on your hips. He placed soothing kisses to your neck, his fluffy hair tickling your cheek. If it wasn't for him, you'd already be crying hysterically.
His embrace was warm and secure, comforting and mellow. His kisses softly ghosted over your skin, and his hands secured you into place, ready to whisk you away at any moment.
The two of you stood like this for a long while, enjoying each others warmth, feeling the gentle sway of the waves, and your heart eventually calmed, slowly but surely. The waves remained steady, passing by you as though you were nothing but a phantom.
Slowly, your feet began to move, until you were waist deep in the water, eyes closed in concentration, Finnick holding you tightly. Your mouth was dried up, and your eyebrows furrowed in worry, stress cursing through your veins, pulsing like your heartbeat.
"You're doing great, love," Finnick softly muttered, grazing his skin against your own, arms wrapped around your torso to keep you warm, his fluffy hair tickling your face. "You're doing so good, keep going." His voice eased your nerves, and slowly but surely, your shoulders relaxed, and you released a shaky breath.
"Thank you Finn, thank you." You whispered, and you fought hard to open your eyes, but the wet sensation of tears had stopped you. You began to sniffle softly, and soon you felt the tears escaping your closed eyes, sliding down your cheek.
Finnick's thumb quickly wiped the first stray tear away, but more poured out. Your quiet sniffles turned into hiccups, body shaking with every breath you took, with every movement of the waves. Finnick gently lifted you up, carrying you away from the water, until you were safely seated in the soft sand, far out of the waters reach.
"I'm sorry..- I- I couldn't do it, Finnick." You sobbed out, tightly gripping his white T-shirt in your fist, crumpling the soft material.
Your meek, silky tears were cushioned by his shirt, his hand caressing your back with delicate strokes.
"It's okay honey, you did so well today..." Finnick softly muttered into your ear, his voice helping to ease your guilt. You knew how desperate he was to go swimming with you again, to be able to explore the kelp forests and spend day and night relaxing in the waters.
"I'm so so so s-sorry.." You continued, and laid in his arms for a while, until the tears dried up and you were left laying in his lap, watching as the sun made its way higher up into the sky, the sea gently swishing back and forth.
You had been there for hours, silently watching.
You could feel Finnick's stomach begin to rumble, and you shifted in his lap, leaning your head back to look at him.
His eyes were boring into the sea, watching with furrowed brows as he was lost in thought.
"Finn... Finnick," You whispered, your fingers gently tracing his jawline, "I think it's time to go, I can hear that you're hungry."
He blinked a few times, inhaling deeply as he looked down at you.
"Are you sure?" He asked, unsure and unwilling to leave the comfortable spot.
You nodded your head, lightly sitting up but his arms stopped you.
"I think Johanna might be bored of looking after the baby." You spoke with a smile, and Finnick reciprocated with a toothy grin of his, shaking his head lightly.
"Oh she loves our boy, she's always calling asking to come see us." He said sweetly, his grin having turned into a soft smile.
"Fine.. We need to stop by the market anyway, we've barely got any food." You said, leaning back on your hands, sitting between Finnick's spread legs.
"I can go catch something, you know. Maybe some abalone or something, like we used to." Finnick said, trying to convince you.
You didn't need much convincing though, as you knew how much he wanted to go back into the water. Maybe someday you'd be able to join him again.
"Off you go then, but don't be too long, and- and be careful. Okay?" You asked, eyebrows furrowing in worry, lifting your hand to caress his cheek.
Finnick leaned into your touch, the soft smile remaining on his face as he nodded.
"I won't be long, I promise."
With that, the two of you stood up, and you embraced each other. Your arms wrapped around his neck, Finnick's hands finding their rightful place on your waist.
The two of you shared a deep kiss, lips moving together in sync as you smiled, feeling your heartbeat speed up.
The wind tugged at your hair, invisible fingers stroking through it as it flowed by.
Finnick's hold on you tightened, and you felt him inhale deeply, his feet shifting in place. You smiled into the kiss, and felt his tongue dart out slightly, ghosting over your bottom lip.
Your fingers curled into his hair, tugging smoothly at the roots, eliciting a groan from him.
You parted from him, hands leaving his hair, coming down to his shoulders.
His lips chased yours for a second, eyes shut as he nudged your nose with his.
You allowed him one last peck, and then moved your face further away, forcing Finnick to open his eyes.
"Go on, I'll be here, waiting." You spoke softly, the smile on your lips finally reaching your eyes.
Finnick nodded with heavy lidded eyes, his lashes casting pale shadows over his cheeks.
"Fine, but you owe me one more kiss." He stated quietly, his hand flying up to the back of your head, keeping it in place as he stole a passionate kiss from your lips.
He then let go, saying a soft, 'I'll be back in a bit', before he stripped his shirt, handing it to you as he flexed his muscles.
You laughed out loud, head hanging back. He truly never failed to make you laugh.
With one last hug, Finnick proceeded to jog off towards the water, his body disappearing further beneath the waves until you saw him dipping under, for a long while.
You sat in the sand, eyes trained on the water.
He would make a reappearance from time to time for some air, before he'd dip back in.
It took him a long while, but eventually he returned, swimming up to the shore with pocketfuls, one hand grasping a whole bunch of abalone.
You raised your eyebrows in bewilderment, extending the corners of his shirt to create a makeshift basket.
Finnick dumped all of the creatures into it, and you tied the ends together, a gleeful smile on your face. "You sure got a lot." You said, shaking your head at him.
Finnick grinned at you, and you looked him over, from his dripping hair to his toned chest, to his shorts.
There was one more, rather large, shell poking at his pocket.
"I think you forgot some there." You pointed out, and Finnick shook his head with a smile.
"This one isn't for eating," he stated with a laugh, his hand reaching into his pocket to retrieve a snail shell, "It's for you." He said softly, handing you the object.
You looked over it, your fingers tracing the intricate, dark red patterns embroidered into the shell. The overall colour was a faint rosรฉ pink, one of your favourite colours. It felt hard in your clutch, but sturdy and strong.
You brought the shell, or rather conch, up to your ear and listened.
After a short moment, you heard the distant sound of wind echoing through the conch. It sounded much different to the breeze present at the beach, but it was calming, comforting.
You looked up to Finnick, unable to hide your smile.
"It's beautiful... H-How did you find it?" You asked, surprise lacing your voice.
"I looked far and wide for it, I wanted to give you something to remember today," Finnick muttered, his voice gravelly and deep as he tried to catch your gaze, "You did so well today, and I want you to know that I'm so proud of you darling."
He spoke softly, and reached a hand up to your chin, lifting it so that you'd look at him.
Tears welled up in your eyes, and you shook your head with a smile. Reaching on your tiptoes, you placed a tender kiss to his lips, feeling how his hand embraced your cheek.
"Thank you Finnick. It's beautiful," You whispered after the two of you parted, feeling the shell in your palm, "I love you so much."
His toothy grin stretched across his cheeks, and Finnick shook his head, gazing at you lovingly, his fingers stroking mellow circles into your waist, "I love you more darling."
Well well well.
Just finished writing the second chapter to Emerlad Carnation. That was a wild ride :,)) I suspect that Iโll post it tomorrow (later today, December 4th) after going over it and editing it a bit. (It has over 7,000 words?!?!?!!!?!!! (Most Iโve ever written))
I hope whoever reads it will enjoy reading it as much as Iโve enjoyed writing it, though the ending is quite heavy. Thank you for anyone whoโs sticking around <33
