junior year, high school.

you feel your backpack slide off your shoulders, your hand catching it and putting it back, but the other end was being tugged. you look up, seeing heeseung holding it as well and you smile at him. he slides the straps on his arms, putting your bag in front of him. “how’s my favorite girl?” heeseung asks as you fix and grab your things from your locker and put some books in your bag.

“i don’t know.” you say, looking up. “how’s your mom?”

heeseung softly laughs. “okay, how’s my favorite girl, who isn’t related to me.” he says and you smile, zipping up your bag as you take your bag from him, but he stops you, putting it on his one shoulder as he starts to walk to the cafeteria.

no, you and heeseung were not in a relationship. but it always felt you were. that’s why when everyone asked you if you’re fine with not having a boyfriend, you would always say, “of course. i have heeseung, anyway.”

you were fine not having a boyfriend because you had your best friend, anyway. not knowing it was your best friend who you desired to be it for you. 

“you ask as if i’m not with you everyday.” you say.

“i haven’t asked you how you’re doing in a while.” heeseung says and you hum. he looks at you as if trying to find something, but he wasn’t sure what it was. he softly nudges you with his shoulder as you look at him. “you’ll tell me everything, right? when you’re sad, mad, whatever. you won’t hide anything from me, right?”

“where is this coming from?” you ask, softly laughing.

heeseung read something last night about an individual who doesn’t want to open up because they feel like a burden to everyone, not even to their very own best friend. he immediately thought of you. all the times when you would randomly want a hug, just staying in his arms, feeling like you were releasing all the tension you had in your body.

“just wanted to know if you’re okay.” he softly says.

you smile—not that it left your lips, anyway. “are you okay?” you ask.

“if you are.” he answers and you sigh, a small chuckle following.

“let’s go, we’re gonna be late.” you say, softly holding on his forearm.

“let’s buy something first, i’m pretty sure you didn’t have breakfast again.” he says, pointing at the cafeteria.

“heeseung,” you softly whine, not wanting to admit he’s right. you didn’t want him to worry. “let’s go!”

“heeseung?!” he dramatically repeats, touching his chest as if offended. “what happened to hee? are you mad, did i do something wrong?”

you laugh and heeseung pulls you to his side. “let’s just buy something, then we’ll run to the classroom, hm?” he says and you softly mumble an okay.

you were okay with the fact that you don’t have a boyfriend. you were okay with the fact that heeseung doesn’t feel the same way. you wouldn’t be okay if heeseung isn’t in your life.
