The birth of a baby elephant is something very special in the herd. It takes 22 months for the young to be born. Longer than any other mammal. No female elephant is alone at birth. During birth, the other animals form a protective circle. Shortly after birth, the baby tries to stand on its feet. After about two days it is strong enough to join the herd. For the first few years, the young drinks about ten liters of milk from its mother every day. It learned to eat greens at the age of two, but it usually takes another three years before it stops drinking milk.

Die Geburt eines Elefantenkindes ist etwas ganz Besonderes in der Herde. 22 Monate dauert es bis das Junge zur Welt kommt. Länger als bei jedem anderen Säugetier. Bei der Geburt ist keine Elefantenkuh allein. Während der Geburt bilden die andern Tiere einen schützenden Kreis. Bereits kurz nach der Geburt versucht das Junge auf seinen Beinen zu stehen. Nach etwa zwei Tagen ist es kräftig genug sich der Herde anzuschließen. In den ersten Jahren saugt das Junge jeden Tag etwa zehn Liter Milch bei seiner Mutter. Mit zwei Jahren hat es gelernt Grünzeug zu fressen, doch meist dauert es noch einmal drei Jahre bis es gar keine Milch mehr trinkt.

The National Marine Aquarium of Namibia is located in the coastal town of Swakopmund, wedged between Atlantic Ocean and Namib Desert. This recently overhauled waterfront aquarium provides an excellent introduction to the cold offshore world in the South Atlantic Ocean.
