The Pride of Africa
South African Railways 25NC
This is a peak into my imagination. In my mind’s eye, I often picture wheels screaming round and round, crossheads pounding back and forth, and cab rides at high speed. Thoughts of steam fill my mind at all hours of the day, and my dreams at night. These things aren't just machines. They are so much more.
Steam inspires me, but the people who worked it inspire me even more. That's why I've chosen the 25NC. I've read a bunch of stories and watched videos put out by this old South African railway man. He was there until the end of steam in the 1990s. The stories he tells provide a wonderful insight into railway life, and the strong friendships the railway men formed with one another.
Now, about the picture. This was very fun and experimental. I'm not good and conveying motion, so I want to get better at it. I think I did alright with the wheels and rods. At first, I wanted to do the front end (the "business end," some might say), but I decided to take it easy on myself and do the back end. If I had colors at my disposal, I would set the picture during the night, and have the rods barely lit by the orange glow from the firebox. Maybe another time.

For my final second year project I'm making a book about my experience moving from Africa to England. I threw this page together as a kind of tumblr exclusive preview - stay tuned...

as I watched the oral delivery this crossed my mind. I didn’t have this exact words but i did think how strange in a good way it is that South Africans donned the attire of empire and it’s rules and came with knowledge, professionalism, expertise, integrity and justice, and used the structures of global western order and slam dunked it (for me, while the verdict will tell us the health of international humanitarian law, the victory was in the compelling case SA showed). A black man in dreads, a brown woman with her brown girl nose, proud and clear and here to fuck shit up. And our officials donning keffiyehs and rainbow nation scarves. A side of the court of all races and colours while on the other side… the symbolism of all of it will be talked about for generations . *chef’s kiss*

This video comes from Quds News Network, a volunteer based Palestinian News organization. To those who may be unwilling to trust such an organization, here's a human rights watch article on the IDF's tendency to attack the elderly. This is all to say the information above is accurate.

That being said, please refrain from calling all those individuals swept up into this war on the Israeli side to all be genocidal. The IDF still uses conscription, and despite the lack of enforcement in the past, current dodging will get you tossed into jail. The longer you refuse, the longer you're sentenced to. To sum up, it's similar to the US involvement with Vietnam in that many soldiers are willing and gleefully committing atrocities in the name of Israel, and some are just there because they must be. To accuse all of that crime is a disservice to those who must attend such violence.

The sadness and despair in those eyes...
There are no innocent soldiers in iof, including the women. I've seen female soldiers laughing and dancing at the misery of Palestinian people and doing heinous acts just like their male counterparts.
