zuko swore to never ever speak in a baby voice

‘I wouldn’t be caught dead speaking like that’ these were his exact words.

Then Izumi came along and his promise broke as whenever the princess giggled or babbled something in gibberish, he would swoon over her and plants multiple kisses on her chubby cheeks.

and even when Izumi wasn’t born he would talk in a baby voice to Mai’s stomach as she bites back a smile as the serious firelord tells his unborn child about random things

mai is the typa person to feed stray cats and have names for all of them and zuko is the type to bring cats home

after mai became the new firelady, she had a lot of rules that needed to be added to the fire nation constitution and now. She wanted to raise the age of marriage and provide more education for women and this wasnt easy at all, she became stuck at her office more than zuko.

And izumi came along soon and she needed to take a very long break to avoid any complications, so she had to put a pause on her projects but still was present in court (cuz she didnt want to be stuck in the bedchambers,bored, ugh). A year after izumi's birth, she restarted her projects and this needed more work and time out of life than when she started.

So zuko had become the one who tucked izumi to bed and he was more than happy to spend time with his little girl. He loved reading izumi bedtime stories and hear izumi's babbling with often mentions of 'mama' or 'dada'

One evening just around izumi's bedtime, mai was able to get off early, so she decided to join in on tucking izumi to bed. She walked to the princess's room just to stop by the door as she heard zuko's voice.

"and that is the story on how your mama saved me,she defeated the army of bad guys and she once again captured my heart" zuko told izumi who was busy chewing on her turtleduck doll (gifted by her coolest aunt suki and sokka) he finished chuckled as he pressed a kiss against her hair.

Turns out izumi got bored of her bedtime stories and became far more interested in hearing about her mama.

It took zuko 10mins to realize the presence of his wife(who was smiling) as he was too busy talking with his daughter in his baby-voice (after he once sweared he would never in a million years talk like that to children) while izumi was babbling and grabbing his hair to chew on

Zuko knows Suki didn’t buy that, it’s Mai cooking cuz he always remembers the taste of the meal she made, she rarely cooks so every time Mai cooks for him, he always eats it slowly and wants to remember every bite. So he knows it’s definitely from Mai. And even if he's gotten sick he'll be glad to know Mai still cares about him. 💕

Mai cared to zuko even after they broke up, if suki mentioned that zuko caught a fever, she would send a flask of komodo chicken soup through suki and made suki tell zuko she bought it.

Zuko adopted/was given druk 2 year after he and mai broke up, when he was still not over it and still had their portrait in his bedroom.

So whenever he got slightly depressed/sentimental or even a bit drunk, he would show druk he and mai's portraits and a few of her single person portraits and tell him 'this was supposed to be your mom you know?'

after they got back together he introduced druk to mai as 'his mom' and mai said she hated it to no end but she actually enjoyed it and saw druk as her child before and after izumi's arrival

Here are some headcanons about Mai & Izumi: 

Teen Mai thought she would never ever have a child. No, thank you. She doesn’t need that wrinkled, loud, troubled little human whom she should deliver right from her body. No, not a chance.

Adult Mai thought Izumi is the best thing that happened in her life.

Mai’s heart always melted when she hugged her baby daughter, or kissed her, or simply saw her playing around.

Mai always stayed late at night with all her work. When Izumi couldn’t sleep without her mom, she had been sneaking in Mai’s study, climbed on her lap or tugged her dress by her tiny fingers until Mai had looked at her. And then Izumi was giving Mai her best adorable eyes. Mai never couldn’t refuse. When Mai had been holding Izumi’s little soft hand and kissed her forehead while her daughter drifted off, Mai couldn’t help but think if she gives to Izumi enough attention.

Mai always preferred Izumi over her duties or anything else in the world.

Before Izumi’s birth Mai tried to read all those books and scrolls with advice on how to be a good mother. Later she realized that this was not going to make her one. When nervous Izumi despite bitten lips and trembled hands shared with Mai her problems and secrets, knowing that she can trust to her mom, Mai guessed that perhaps Izumi’s trust could determine much more than those stupid scrolls.

Mai always made Izumi’s hair. That was a long period when Izumi asked to make her only two hair-buns, and Mai always secretly smiled seeing that little copy of herself running through the palace halls.

Mai kept all Izumi’s drawings and presents in her desk.

Mai liked to sing lullabies to her little girl. And when teen/adult Izumi suddenly remembers some words from “that one about dragon’s princess”, that always warms Mai’s heart.

They always laughed when Izumi mimicked Mai’s lines. “I’m bored.”/ “Finally something to do.” / “I don’t need any protection.”

It took a while to convince teen Izumi she is beautiful the way she is, and not her glasses, or sharp chin, or skinny body are not defining her beauty.

It was even harder to convince teen Izumi that she’s not a failure and they are very proud of her even when she cannot understand some diplomatic cases at fire lord’s political meetings. 

Izumi always took mother’s side in fights with father, even when Mai was wrong. That started when Izumi was little and suddenly heard parents arguing, she stood between them and very seriously pointed her tiny finger at Zuko, saying “Don’t scream at mom!” They started laughing.

From that moment Zuko joked that Izumi was the only one who’s ‘protection’ Mai ever accepted.

Zuko always spoiled Izumi a bit, and Mai was rather a strict one… and that never stopped Izumi from thinking that her mom is the best mom.

They had happy times, they had rough times, but Mai always tried to hold this special mother-daughter connection with Izumi, knowing that no matter what, she would never forgive herself if Izumi only once doesn’t feel her love and support. 

I just picture zuko falling deeper everytime mai smiles or laughs

I wonder what Izumi thought about her Mommy and Daddy relationship at that time.

Izumi is like; "Wait so you two really did broke up? I always thought you were glued to each other, couldn't keep your hands off."

Zuko: “I don't wanna talk about the old bad times, Zumi. The important thing is we're now here having you, our little turtle duck.”

Mai and Zuko exchanged loving gazes towards each other and smiled.

Izumi: “Oh please... Go to your room you two!”

"mai isn't izumi's mother, her and zuko broke up in the comics and mai is seeing another guy."

once little izumi says to zuko she wants to see grandpa and zuko is like, "sure, we can go see grandpa iroh." but izumi replies, "not that grandpa!" and zuko says, "oh, you mean grandpa ikem", but izumi says "no!", and zuko thinks with a horror that his daughter wants to see ozai, until izumi grins proudly and says, "i want to see grandpa aang!!!"

Oh I need to see more about my Fire Nation’s Royal Family, Mai and Zuko as Parents and Cutie baby Izumi 🥹♥️✨

thinking about a scene where 3-5 y.o. izumi sneaks to her father's study and climbs on his lap. zuko, not taking his eyes from the scrolls in front of him, settles his baby on his lap and gives her a piece of blank paper, a pen and ink, so izumi can draw while he's reading. but after a few moments, bored izumi tugs his robes and gives him adorable eyes and pleads, "can you draw me a dragon?"

zuko sighs, "sure" and postpones his papers. he draws something similar to a dragon's head and asks, "what does this dragon have?" izumi screams, "eyes!", so he draws eyes. zuko asks, "what else?" and izumi replies, "nose!", so zuko draws dragon's nostrils.

after every "what else?" he draws dragon's eyes, body, legs, wings and a big tail, scales and claws, fire that their dragon breathes. when it's finished, izumi claps her tiny hands and begs, "please, please, please dada, draw a turtleduck!"

zuko draws a turtleduck, a koala-sheep, an ostrich-horse, every animal izumi asks him about. zuko completely forgets about his work. they draw until mai catches them and pretends irritated because "oh, agni! zuko! you were supposed to look through the papers for tomorrow's meeting!"
