Because this is Zuko finally coming home.
Yes, he hugged Iroh, yes, he made up with Iroh, yes, Iroh’s his family…but he always had Iroh throughout the show. His very first scene was him talking with Iroh, and his uncle always had his back; the only separation between those two happened in Book Three (and that brief portion of Book Two).
But Mai is the one there to welcome him home.
And what’s more?
It’s not just Zuko’s resolution here.
It’s also Mai finally being able to express herself, finally being able to hug Zuko, to welcome him back and to be open with him—she saved his life, she took a stand for what she believed in and what she wanted, and she gave up her safety and security…and now she’s found it again. She’s finally got the life she wanted.
Both of them are hugging here because they have both finally found what they wanted most in the world.

Honestly every time when I remember that Zuko loved one girl for all his life, it makes me SO HAPPY. The Girl, with who they were in love since childhood, with who they were separated.. separated for forever as it seemed at the moment, and they tried to put up with the idea that they probably would never see each other again (and Zuko were lying to himrself that he would return and everything would be as it had been, but Mai had a more sober look at things and understood that she had little to zero chances to see Zuko again). The Girl with who he was separated the second time after their reunion, again risking to lose each other. The Girl who sacrificed herself to save him. The Girl who in the end became his wife, his Fire Lady, mother of his kid. Only Girl who made him smile. No other girl or a guy in the whole show can even compare with her and what she was to Zuko. Nor Ty Lee, nor Katara, nor Aang, Sokka, Song or Jun.. Only Mai. They never hated each other.

first off, I'm planning to extend crowning glory into a Mai-centric oneshot series about Fire Nation girlhood, touching up on her thoughts about (1) childbirth and (2) filial piety over the years.
there's also a modern fake dating AU brewing in my head (and sitting on my 27-page Google doc of maiko fic ideas), but I'll still see where inspiration takes me.
lastly, I'd really like to write some good ol' Fire Nation Royal Family domestic fluff! plspls if you have any maikozumi headcanons and/or prompts you'd like to see in a fic, don't hesitate to send me an ask or reply to this post! 🙏
