Draco was on a mission when Harry’s Patronus changed: majestic antlers and graceful legs replaced with huge paws and shaggy fur. Harry was baffled. (What could possibly have altered the shape of his soul?)

He understood when he heard how the mission had gone wrong.

He placed a mandrake leaf underneath his tongue and waited for lightning to strike. (One’s Animagus form, it was said, also reflected the core of oneself.) When the full moon rose, he donned his new shape—huge paws, shaggy fur—and, together, they ran until the sun came up.

I watch them bring him out, all sharp angles and too-long matted hair. Hermione puts her hand on my shoulder. The trembling never stops.

“Harry?” she says, voice far away.

I wish my testimony had meant something, wish I’d said more.

This is not the kiss I wanted for Draco.

“Harry?” I wake up to Draco shaking my sweat-damp shoulders.

“I was dreaming they sentenced you to The Kiss,” I gasp.

He looks at me and I realise: I loved him then. All the way back at the trials — I just didn’t know it. Maybe it’s time he finds out.
