you were at mark’s house to work on a project you were partners for. you only met mark a few months back, but you were pretty close. the two of you happened to have most of your classes together, so naturally you got to know each other quickly. you and mark have always been kinda flirty, and it was safe for both of you to assume that you liked each other. mark has been wanting to make his move for a while, but always misses his timing. so he saw tonight as an opportunity to actually ask you out.

for the past 2 hours or so, you’ve been sitting at the desk up against the wall in his room, going through your slides presentation. your eyes are getting tired so you close them for a minute, subtly swaying side to side, trying to keep your balance and not pass out onto the desk.

“oh yeah did you ever do the research for the second slide?” … “y/n?”

when you didn’t answer, mark glanced over to you, seeing you fighting to keep your head up. mark saw this as a perfect opportunity for him. he gently pulled your head to lay on his shoulder. he smiled proudly to himself. he stopped talking, trying to let you rest. getting a blurry glimpse of mark’s hands typing on the keyboard through your slightly opened eyelids, you were almost asleep. that was until mark’s mom opened the door briefly, before awkwardly apologizing and closing the door. the sudden noise jolted you up off of mark’s shoulder.

mark cleared his throat. “uhm, so im just finishing up this slide.”

“sorry, i was just really tired.” you mumbled, rubbing your eyes.

you stood up to stretch your legs and wandered around mark’s room a little. you noticed the guitar propped up against the corner of the room. you sit on the floor with the guitar in your hands and begin to strum it cluelessly.

“that sounds awful.” mark laughed, turning around in his spinny office chair to face you.

“here look.” mark sighs, walking over to you. he sat behind you, putting his arms around your back to get a grip on the guitar. with his hand, he guided your fingers into different positions on the frets to form simple chords, moving your other hand under his to strum the strings.

your eyes were fixed to his face that was so concentrated on the strings, looking at them from over your shoulder. he looked so cute with his determined expression.

“see, that’s how you play an e minor chor-” eyebrows raised, blinking a few times, mark was startled to see you staring at him. you didn’t look away though, observing how mark’s ears turn red, and feeling his palms get hotter as they still lied on top of your hands. it seemed mark was about to say something because he took a small breath in, but before any words left his mouth, you kissed him on his cheek. now the peaceful stillness of the room was becoming a bit awkward, so you break eye contact and switch your attention back to the guitar. “wait so how do you play this thing again?” your interest in the guitar only lasted for a moment, before mark leaned in closer to you, connecting his lips with yours to place a short but sweet kiss. both of your hearts beating so quickly, nearly jumping into one another’s chests.

“i think now might be a good time to tell you that i like you.” mark scratched the back of his neck, looking away from you.

“i like you too mark.” you said, looking at the back of his head turning towards you again.

“oh cool. cool.” he sucks in his lips nodding his head slowly.

“soo uhhh….” he continues, “do you.. i mean.. are.. or- can i-”

you helped him out, as he was clearly struggling. “will you be my boyfriend mark?”

“yes.”

you were smiling like an idiot.

“cool.”

mark wasn’t more than just a close friend, and you were okay with that. you were okay with it because the two of you were just close friends that also held hands when they walked, that wrapped their arms around each other, and that fell asleep on each other’s shoulders. just a close friend. however it was moments like these right now, sitting on the couch next to your close friend as he holds you very close to him, looking directly into his eyes, both of you teary eyed from feeling so cared for by one another, that made you wonder what exactly you were.

you were a fool for mark lee. as was he, for you.

johnny has always teased you.

you’ve known each other since 4th grade yet still throughout your high school years, johnny never misses an opportunity to get you worked up.

even though he was really only an inconvenience, you enjoyed having classes with johnny.

“hey give it back!”

you whine as johnny lifted up your pencil case higher into the air, extending his arm way up out of your reach, taking it as far as stepping up onto a chair, allowing him to briefly brush against the considerably low ceiling with his fingertips.

“mm-mm.”

johnny proudly shakes his head no.

you’ve watched johnny grow up. you’ve seen how he’s changed and grown, and how much taller he’s gotten. and as much as you hated it, for some reason your heart couldn’t help but flutter a little when he did things like this to tease you, taking advantage of the huge height different between the two of you.

“i said give it back you bozo.”

you jumped up and down and flailed your arms in the air in hopes you could grasp onto your belongings. you only looked ridiculous.

his lips curled into a smile.

“and what if i don’t...” johnny said tauntingly as he lowered his head to your level, keeping his chin up, squinting his eyes as he shook his head side to side to appear playfully intimidating.

a bit flustered at the sudden proximity of his face to yours, you tried to find your words.

“then i’ll- then i’ll- i’ll-”

you were cut off by the abrupt silence of the room and the familiar voice of your teacher.

johnny eagerly rushed back to his desk.

all the attention is on you. confused, you look around and notice all the heads turned your direction…your hands still in the air, slowly making their way back to the sides of your torso.

“good morning students, welcome to class.” your teacher cleared his throat. “y/n, do we have a problem here?”

you were bright red from the embarrassment of your entire class staring right at you after making a scene.

“no sir… my apologies.” you blurted out with cracks in your voice.

johnny glared at you from the side of his eye in amusement, but also just as much fear, as you locked eyes with him.

“johnny suh i’m gonna kill you…” you threatened under your breath, while giving an awkward reassuring smile to your teacher before heading to your seat.

johnny tensed up.

you and your crush!mark had first period together, orchestra. you played the cello and mark played the piano to accompany the orchestra. you’ve had a crush on mark for a really long time now, and your heart fluttered every time you were around him. you see mark settling down at the piano, pulling some sheet music out of his backpack that was slightly crinkled at the corners. you walked over and took a seat on the wooden bench mark was sitting on, that was just big enough for the two of you to share. “play something.” mark requested nudging your shoulder with his. you could feel your heart almost bursting out of your chest. you could also play the piano, and so you naturally began to press down the keys in such a way that it created a beautiful melody from the notes you were reading so easily yet carefully from the sheet that laid flat on the top of the glossy piano. you pressed a wrong key, causing the harmonies to clash dissonantly, and with that having been done, you let out a huff while you smiled and turned to the boy to your left, whom to your surprise, was already staring right at you. you swallowed then cleared your throat. “uh do you mind if i borrow this sheet music? it’s really pretty and i wou-”

“you’re really pretty.”

you stared at mark blankly.

“uhhh i mean. yeah sure of course. ill give it to you after class…” mark coughed, jolting his head a little, causing the lightweight hair covering his forehead to bounce. you thought it was really cute. after class, mark handed you the paper. “thank youuu! ill give this back to you tomorrow morning!” you waved to mark as he walked the opposite direction down the hall. you couldn’t help but notice something written on the back in pen that you could see bleeding through the thin white sheet. you flipped over the page, met with a little note that read:

with all the butterflies in your stomach, you could have sworn you were floating. did mark really like you back???

finally home, you ran into your room, jumping onto your bed squealing after burying your face into your pillow and kicking your legs in the air. you grab the sheet music from your backpack and pick up a pencil that was conveniently already on your desk. you pressed down on the worn down eraser of the mechanical pencil a few times, dispensing the stick of led out some more before writing:

in response, right under mark’s note. you didn’t even bother actually practicing the song.

⋆｡˚ ☆ ୭̥° next morning

the bell just barely rang. you walk into the classroom to find mark standing up, gently leaning against the piano, twiddling his thumbs as his mind seemed to be somewhere else. you walk up to him. “here, mark.” extending your arms, holding the paper with both of your hands, looking up comfortably at the not-so-tall but taller-than-you boy. without even a small gesture in response to you, the first thing mark does is flip the page over to the backside in hopes to find your reply, as if he had been anticipating it.

marks eyes widen and his ears turn red.

you and mark exchange nervous smiles.
