One Of The First Comic Books I Ever Owned, The Very First Manga My Parents Got Me, Was The First Volume

One of the first comic books I ever owned, the very first manga my parents got me, was the first volume of Dragon Ball.

Its price is still listed in pesetas, the spanish currency that went out of circulation by the time I was 6 years old. It's so beat up because I read it so many times.

Akira Toriyama's work has been omnipresent throughout my life. Folks as old as my parents have fond memories of seeing Dr. Slump on TV. My generation grew up with the likes of Dragon Ball GT. Kids these days are still able to watch Dragon Ball in modern children's programming or play brand new games with his art style all over them. This stuff is genuinely a generational connection that's passed down and shared from father to son.

Even though we've always clowned on some creative decisions, or the shallowness of his storytelling compared to other authors, it's undeniable that he was one of the most influential manga artists to ever put pen to paper. Entire industries wouldn't be where they are today without him. But that's not the extent of it. I think his biggest achievement was to create something that allowed people to forge friendships beyond the boundaries of age, language, nationality, and everything imaginable.

The stories he told will surely continue to grow and spark the imagination of generations to come, as they did mine, and the ones of those who came before me.

Rest in peace 🐉

The geography nerd council must convene

I keep forgetting that my knowledge of where other countries are on a map isn't the norm in the US lol

I mentioned to someone once about my Mexican-American brother's question of "Colombia borders Mexico, right?" But I just remembered another story

(Me talking to my nephew about Bob Marley: One Love)

Him: Well anyway, I liked the movie, but I just don't get why they had them speak Afrikaans throughout the movie

Me:...They don't speak Afrikaans in Jamaica

Him: Really?...No, there has to be some speakers over there

Me: Maybe, but it's primarily spoken in South Africa

Him: No, there has to be more.

Me: Well there are some speakers in Namibia, but only really in Africa, not Jamaica.

Him:....Jamaica is in Africa, stupid🙄

This whole tiktok ban deal is indeed terrifying, but the takes I'm seeing man...

You can be against the ban and still not try to paint tiktok as something wonderful and helpful that the government is trying to stop because it "stops their propaganda" or whatever. The influence and popularity of that app is enshittifying every other platform because they're trying to emulate it. The prevalence of short form content is leading to rather obvious tendencies like the shortening of attention spans. Misinformation runs rampant in short video platforms and a vast majority of the audience doesn't care enough to check facts and sources. And since it's the attention economy, what rises to the top is complete garbage with shock value.

Not gonna stand here and deny there aren't good people and good things happening there but for fucks sake do not whitewash that hellhole.
