john jolts upwards, as he did many nights before, and many months before that. “john…” you mutter after being awaken, arm lazily draping around his middle. “i’m sorry…” he whispers, lying back down, arms wrapping around you. “it’s okay, talk to me.” you whisper, eyes still closed as john cuddles close. “it’s… it’s still the same. that house, amy… every night i’m brought back there.” john sighs, his breath ghosting over your face. “it’s okay. you’re not there, you’re here with me.” your hand finds his cheek, thumb stroking his skin soothingly. “please never leave my side, my love.” john whispers, and your eyes finally open. yet, they’re not you. your grip turns harsh, claws digging into his skin as sinister laughter echoing off the walls.

john gasps, sitting up, cold terror deep in his chest. you sit up, wiping sleep from your eyes. “johnny?” you immediately hug him, and he sees the contrast from the nightmare and you. “oh, thank the Lord.” he whispers, crumbling into your embrace. “thank you, Lord… you’re okay.” john squeezes you tightly, and you sigh gently. “everything’s okay, johnny. just breathe, it’s a nightmare.” you rub his back gently, soothing circles calming his cries slowly. “tell me about it, johnny.” your voice is calm amongst a raging sea, tone motherly and caring. he feels so loved. “it’s- it was nothing like the nights before… it started as the original nightmare, of amy and the house… then i woke up, and you were there- but it wasn’t you… something had you.” he admits, and you sigh, pulling away to grasp his cheeks. “that’s not real, i’m perfectly safe with you. nothing followed you home, nothing got me. everything is okay.” you tell him, and he nods.

you wrap john up in another hug, squeezing him tightly as he calms down. “do you want anything, love?” you ask, pulling away from his grasp. “i don’t want to be a bother…” he admits, and you laugh gently. “nonsense. you’d never bother me, john. do you want some tea?” you ask, gently brushing some hair from his eyes. “okay..” he nods, kissing your lips gently. “okay, my love. settle down, i’ll be right back.” you get up, feeling john’s lingering grasp slip from your hips. you walk out, turning on the hallway light. it seeps into the room, barely illuminating his surroundings. john’s eyes scan over his surroundings, observing for anything different; anything wrong, out of place. nothing. everything was how it was when he fell asleep.

doing as you said, john lies back, trying to settle into sleep. the faint sound of the kettle emanating from the kitchen keeps him aware that you’re there, but you’re not actually there. pulling the blanket from his body, john leaves the warmth and comfort of his bed, seeking you out. he sees your back, you’re preparing his tea. carefully, he walks forward, wrapping his arms around your middle with a gentleness, as if you were made of china and he were a monster. “i thought i told you to settle down.” you giggle, resting your hands over his. “i can’t. not while you’re not there.” john sighs, face nuzzling into your neck. you’re warm, whereas john tends to run cold. he adores the way your body warms him up, the way his coldness absorbs your heat. your thumbs rub over his knuckles, playing with his fingers a little as you carefully sway. john smiles into your neck, kissing your skin gently.

“you’re freezing.” you chuckle, it’s breathy and light. “sorry.” john mumbles, kissing up your jaw. you turn your head, meeting him halfway. your lips are soft and cosy against his. john leans in more, enjoying the kiss, how the pure adoration and love swells in his chest. your fingers intertwine through his, squeezing his hands gently. “you’re so adorable.” you giggle, kissing him again. “mmh. well, you’re gorgeous.” john smiles against your lips. you giggle softly, hands trailing from his palms and up his arms. “i’m so lucky to have you by my side.” john whispers, peppering kisses across your face. you laugh softly, hand coming up to cradle his jaw. “i’m lucky to have you too, johnny.” you smile, kissing his lips. john gives you a lovestruck smile, carefully stroking the back of his fingers over your cheek.

the kettle clicks, signifying it was done as the water steams. “c’mon, let me make your tea.” you smile, pulling away a little. his arms tighten as john attaches to your back, and so you carefully prepare his tea with your lover pressed up against you. “johnny can you get the milk, please?” you ask softly, and he hums; kissing your cheek gently as he separates from your back. he comes back within record time, putting it beside you as his arms wrap back around you. “thank you, my love.” you purr, pouring in the appropriate amount of milk into his mug. “here you go, my love.” you push the mug towards him, and he takes it. “thank you, my beloved.” john kisses the corner of your mouth. “come on, then.” you state idly, putting the milk away. “let’s get back to bed.” you give him a kiss after seeing the glint in his eye. “okay, darling.” he replies, a soft smile on his face.

you bring john back to the bedroom, settling down onto the bed. john puts his mug atop of the bedside table, getting into bed beside you. “do you want to do some reading? i wouldn’t mind a bedtime story.” you tease, resting your chin upon his chest as you gaze up at him. john chuckles softly. “i’d love to, darling.” he responds softly, leaning over a little to grasp a book. he pulls back, and you smile. “that’s a good one.” you state, gently kissing his chest. “you’ve read this before?” he asks, and you hum. “yes, but don’t let that stop you. it’s a good story, and it’s been a while since i’ve read it so i can’t remember a lot of it.” you reply, and john nods. he opens the book, beginning to read. he takes soft sips between paragraphs, glancing to you every now and then. you’re dozing off, but still listening. john rests a hand upon your head, gently stroking a lock of your hair as you slowly fall asleep.

as soon as you’re completely asleep, john puts the book away, pushing a bookmark between the pages. he finishes his tea, feeling quite sleepy himself. leaning down, he kisses your cheek as he lays down. “thank you for being here for me, my lovely. you’re truly an angel.” he whispers, cuddling you close. you hum, resting your cheek upon his chest as you settle against his body. john closes his eyes, arms squeezing you against his body as he falls asleep.
