Halloween Film Frightstival Day 14: Immaculate (2024)

Halloween Film Frightstival Day 14: Immaculate (2024)

Just your classic Christian iconography themed horror movie. Kind of like Rosemary’s Baby from a decade where you’re allowed to make the Catholic Church the villain.

There were some huge holes in logic that make the entire film null, most blatant the fact that if the church needed the next mother of Jesus they could just like say that? And millions of catholic women would probably volunteer? And then they’d have a huge pool of options to find the perfect person who’d actually want to participate instead of stalking and raping a nun? Just an idea. Also since they didn’t use a cloning process, everyone involved has just neglected to realize that they’re not actually inducing Jesus’ second coming, they’re just making Jesus’ son, and Grandson of God sounds ridiculous

I guess technically there are thematic criticisms going on like the victimization of women, patriarchal nature of the Catholic Church, etc. but it’s all been done before and if you’re going to do something that’s been done before, you’d better do it exceptionally well. I know it’s also supposed to have a theme of choice since we live in a post Roe world, but there was absolutely no mention of her opinion on actually carrying and having the baby, which I guess is maybe a statement on how she had no choice, but it made her seem passive in her own life. Until of course she chose the only kind of abortion people should actually have a problem with

Sydney Sweeney’s performance was good (and it was interesting to see the ways it seemed like they were trying to sexualize her character while wearing conservative nun clothes), I think it was just an additive effect of a lot of the rest of the movie being kind of basic that made it just feel kind of mediocre overall
