Update: She's Dry Sobbing

Update: she's dry sobbing

So my sister just found out that AO3 will be down for 10 hrs in the near future and proceeded to make the most horrendous vocalisation of grief that should never come out of a human's mouth, comparable to that of a manatee getting a colonoscopy, and my mom heard her all the way across the house and, palpably concerned, asked her what was wrong.

She was like, "nothing."

Personally I think the most tragic angst trope is when a child's loved one dies and they genuinely just aren't equipped to accept it.

They go out in the rain and they cry for someone they'll never see again to hold them. And other people try to explain that they're not coming back, that they're gone now, and that just doesn't make sense in the child's head because didn't they always come back? They always did, they were always there and if they weren't there they would be back later and they even promised...

"They're gone," someone would say gently.

And the child would look up, tears mixing with rain, and they would blink. "Gone?" They would repeat in a small voice.

The other would kneel, frame the child's face in their hands, but to the child those hands would be cold.

"Let's go home, alright?"

Rain and silence. Finally, a nod.

A part of that child will always stay in the rain, will stand crying and calling and searching. Hold me, hug me, where are you?

Where are you?

You, a necromancer, were always fond of your skeleton minions. Even going as far as to make each one a personalized name tag. Then you were cut down by those blasted heroes, only to one day reopen your eyes and see an Elder Lich looming over you with a very faded name tag.
