The Gift Of Love...

image

One bitter cold winter day last year I was walking from my car to the post office, one of the few vestiges left in town where the homeless can put out their hand. A disheveled old man, probably in his 70's, approached me and humbly asked if I could afford him some change. As I always do, I reached in my wallet and a gave what I could spare. It wasn't as if I could spare anything it but what else could I do? He shook my hand and thanked me profusely. I bade him farewell and we parted.

As I walked away I pictured this old man when he was young, happy and healthy. I knew that he had once laughed and cried. I knew that he had once loved and been loved. I knew that he had once cared and been cared for. And now, all he had left was memories, hunger, fear and sadness. He was void of anything else that gives all of us purpose and meaning to our lives.

I turned around and called to the old gentleman as he slowly tottered away. He turned and we walked toward each other. I could see the fear in his eyes as if I was going to warn him of how to spend the money I had just given him. As he approached I saw his tattered coat, certainly not suitable for that kind of blistering cold. I saw what little hair he had left on his hatless head blowing in the cold winter wind. His hands were without covering of any kind and his shoes, what was left of them, were of little use. As he lumbered up to me I put my arms around him and he instinctively but cautiously did the same to me. I then felt him surrender and embrace me as though he had not embraced or been embraced in years.

We stood that way for a while which no doubt appeared peculiar and perhaps even disgusting to the many disaffected passersby. He then looked up at me with tears streaming from his sunken eyes. His quivering mouth could say nothing but his expression clearly spoke of surprise and humbled gratitude. He felt as if he mattered, and he did matter. He mattered to me. As we parted once more I watched him walk away. His stature was more erect and his gate was much sturdier. His body language spoke of renewed dignity.

He walked away that day with more than the five that I had put in his pocket. He walked away with my love and respect for the good human being that he was. ~ Trabue Gentry

A UFO I Sighted

This series of pictures was taken from a History Channel documentary on UFOs. The UFO depicted was exactly like the UFO I and the whole of Springfield saw in 1967 when I was 13. It approached in a now it was there, now it's here" fashion and It was completely silent. When it stopped it was no more than 100 feet above the ground and 75 in front of me. It appeared to be at least one city block in length. It was so close we could make out every little detail including silhouetted figures walking around in the front windows. It stayed for approximately 10 minutes, as far as anyone could tell.

We were all relieved when the official report declared that it was only an advertising airplane. I can see how this could be mistaken for that, can't you? :-) ~ Trabue Gentry
