thinking about andre and his dad…

in the scene with andre’s parents, they’re all having fun and joking about brad, even andre’s mom, but then his dad comes in and gets somewhat angry. when andre’s face is shown, he’s very upset, a great contrast to seconds ago when he was laughing. cal quickly changes the subject and says it’s probably time for them to leave. in the graveyard scene, cal tells rachel that andre’s dad “doesn’t beat him and all” while looking somewhat guilty or uncomfortable. he skirts around the word abuse or simply saying his dad isn’t mean, but it’s obvious what he means. finally… in the last message scene, andre mentions his mother, absolves her of blame, but his father is never mentioned, not even hinted at.

andre’s dad even said he never thought he would say he was proud of andre. andre laughed as if that was normal. andre deserved better.

Any hcs about cal being jealous :0 like if Andre somehow made a new friend or Andre tells cal someone actually asked him out??

JEALOUS CAL HCS

- i truly believe cal is more of a jealous person than andre.

- cal doesn’t outwardly say anything to andre or to the person close to andre. he stays quiet and shuts down.

- he starts to distance himself from andre as he believes andre doesn’t love him as much anymore.

- a big example of jealous cal would be when andre joined the track team sometime during middle school. cal immediately jumped to the conclusion that andre found a better group of people.

- cal doesn’t just become angry with andre. he becomes angry with everyone he interacts with. he snaps at his parents, his siblings, rachel, his teachers, etc.

- he doesn’t think rationally when he’s jealous. he’ll see andre with someone else and sees red, even though he hangs out with rachel a ton.

- he begins copying the person andre has become close with. he wants to be first for andre, so he transforms himself into someone andre would love.

- when andre confronts him about how he’s been acting, cal tries to play it off as nothing, but he ends up blowing up at andre when andre continues to ask.

- he ends up crying in andre’s arms, telling andre that he thought he was “replacing him.”

- most times, andre basically drops the new person. in some cases, though, he stays in touch with them, but makes sure cal knows they don’t mean much to him.

thinking about how the girl who wrote andre a letter said that andre always made her laugh and made jokes all the time to the point that he got kicked out because the teacher heard him.

Caldre: Shotgunning

The room was dark, only slightly lit by a horror movie playing on Andre’s scratchy old television in the basement. Trails of smoke rise into the air as they escape from Cal’s mouth. The boy lays back on the couch with his legs almost hanging off. Andre noted that it didn’t look comfortable at all.

“Cal, are you even watching the movie?” Andre asked from his beanbag on the floor. Cal was the one who had begged to buy the stupid movie, saying there was a cool review in the paper. Now, he sat with hooded eyes and stared at the ceiling.

Cal sat up a little and rose the joint in his hand to his mouth so he could take a hit. He slid off the couch and kneeled next to Andre before blowing the smoke in the other boy’s face.

Andre’s face contorted into something awful, his nose scrunched up and his eyes squeezed shut. The look gained a giggle from Cal, one that almost knocked the boy over.

He suddenly stopped laughing and got impossible closer to Andre. “I have an idea. C’mere.”

Andre didn’t hesitate. His heart raced as he became nose to nose with Cal. Even when Cal took another hit of the joint, they continued their eye contact.

Cal got closer, almost placing his lips on Andre’s lips, and blew the smoke into Andre’s mouth. He placed his hand on Andre’s jaw to make sure he breathed in, and the older boy did.

Cal pulled back as Andre breathed out after a second, a wave of smoke escaping his mouth. The blush on Andre’s face was the furthest thing from avoidable. After a moment of silence, both of the boys burst into laughter.

Cal spoke between breathy chuckles. “I always have the best ideas. Don’t you think so, Andre?”
