he’d text andre the entire time, updating him on everything from the songs being played to the decorations on the walls to the jokes rachel’s friends are making. when they play a band andre likes, cal announces it to everyone and records a video to prove to andre that prom wasn’t absolutely horrible.

later that night, when everyone was slow dancing, cal would hide in the bathroom. he hates that rachel won’t have anyone to dance with, but he can’t make himself leave the stall he’s stood in. there’s something keeping him from joining her, from putting his hands on her waist and his face close to hers.

he facetimes andre, just like he does with every other problem he has. the older boy offers to come pick cal up, saying that he left work a while ago, but cal refuses. he honestly thought the limo was pretty cool, even if the people in it made him uncomfortable.

the boys make a compromise. andre would come to the school but not come anywhere near the gym with all of the people and deafening music. he’d sit in the bleachers in his basketball shorts and one of cal’s old band t-shirts. when cal comes to join him, suit all wrinkled, they sit in silence. after a while, cal explains that he has to leave, that rachel is texting him that their group is about to leave.

andre nods and stays on the bleacher for a while after cal leaves. he knows he has to be home soon, that his parents will look for him, but he doesn’t really want to leave. seeing cal all dressed up with tousled hair and a slight tipsy grin on his face made andre angry. he should’ve been the one to go to prom with cal, not rachel fucking lurie.
