if zero day never happened, the two of them would be in their fourties, or almost there at least. they’ve graduated college. andre has a fantastic job as an electrical engineer, and cal is working in a publishing company. the house they live in is homey; it’s one story and decorated with band and movie posters, blankets, and a large fireplace.

every morning, andre drinks a cup or two of coffee while cal downs some ungodly flavor of an energy drink. they shower together simply to spend more time with one another. nothing has changed since they were teenagers. they’re still attached at the hip and closer to each other than anyone else.

their bed is never made unless family is coming over. cal’s mom hates seeing a messy room, and andre’s dad already doubts andre can be a responsible adult. whenever they come home from work, they play music and sit on the couch in silence. cal normally reads a book while andre lays his head in his lap.

more often than not, they meet each other on their lunch breaks. their jobs are not far away from one another, but they’ll never admit that they planned that. there’s a small cafe midway between them that has cheap sandwiches and drinks. cal always eats the food andre wasn’t able to finish.

it isn’t what they planned for in life. if you’d asked seventeen year old them what they’d be up to in the future, they’d say they didn’t have a future. they’d speak of zero day and zero day only. little did they know, they’d call off that plan in a couple months and live a life way better than they ever could’ve imagined.

andre would drive cal to the smoke shop, but he’d never go in. when cal gets back in the car, andre immediately asks what flavors he got. if it’s one andre doesn’t like, he’ll just pout on the way home. there’s been multiple times when andre has had to pull over because he tried a new flavor and had a coughing fit because he hated it.

okay so… simple answer: andre.

more in depth: i think andre tops most of the time while cal does on certain occasions. most of the time, andre enjoys the rush he gets when he tops, when he’s “in charge” or whatever. he’ll normally do missionary or something like that where he can face cal because he likes to see how overwhelmed and good he makes cal feel. of course, there are times when cal tops, normally when andre is especially clingy, has just gotten back from track, or when he just wants to be taken care of. cal topping ranges from using his fingers while he blows andre to fully pushing andre face first into the mattress until andre is tearing up.

andre answering his home phone and having to hear the worst news he’s ever received in his life.

cal committed. he didn’t wait until zero day. he didn’t warn andre. he didn’t do it with andre.

when andre hears the news, he drops the phone, listening to the plastic break as it hits the floor. he looks at the kitchen table, in his back pack, and in his jacket, but he cannot find his keys anywhere. fuck it. andre opens the door and begins running to the gabriel house.

his legs are sore from track and workouts, but andre can’t feel them. he feels like he’s flying. he’s getting too close to the sun, burning and burning until his wings completely melt.

when he gets to the gabriel house, about eleven blocks from the kriegman house, cal’s siblings are sat in the yard with some police officers while his parents are stood in each other’s arms while talking to another officer. his mom looks destroyed. his dad keeps glancing at the front door, waiting and hoping for his oldest son to stand up and walk out, begging for this entire thing to be a joke.

andre runs past them; he pushes officers away from him and almost punches one square in the nose. he makes it into the house and into the hallway that holds cal’s room. he can see inside. there is blood everywhere. cal’s face is destroyed.

despite all the destruction, andre swears he can feel cal’s heart beating, even from a distance. he feels it in the floor, in his chest, and in his head. he can hear it louder than his own heart.

after all of his running, andre collapses. his knees hit the ground with such force that they might break. he curls into himself, holding himself in an embrace that is impossibly tight.

the only things that stay still are andre’s eyes. everything else is moving around him and he’s shaking, but his eyes are still trained on the boy on the ground in front of him. the sight burns itself into andre’s brain. andre begs himself to look away, even clawing at his cheeks, but he genuinely cannot. it is horrifying.

in the moment, no one knows that andre will soon follow cal’s fate. they don’t know that the boys will share a wake. they don’t know that they will be buried next to each other only days apart.
