cal is the new guy at andre’s job. andre hates him at first, sighing every time he walks into work and sees the boy’s mop of messy blond hair. when he’s scheduled with cal, he always asks to change it, but his boss says that they need to get along.

cal doesn’t know that andre hates him. he talks to his best friend rachel about the older boy all the time, blabbing on and on about how he caught andre staring and how their hands brushed together.

every time cal flirts, andre thinks he’s messing with him. after a childhood of bullying, it’s hard for him to entertain the idea of someone having a crush on him. after a while, though, andre realizes cal’s not joking around.

andre takes a different look at cal after that. he stops thinking about his hair as messy and starts thinking of it as the perfect frame around cal’s face. he begins talking to cal more and actually being able to work with him.

one night after work, andre offers to drive cal home. they sit in the parking lot for a while and take the long way home, figuring out that they have the same taste in music and that they’re in the same grade. both of them wonder how they’d never noticed one another before.

when they arrive at cal’s house, andre turns the music down to say bye. cal’s siblings run out of the house to welcome cal home and end up asking andre a billion questions. soon, cal’s mom calls them all in, saying it’s a school night and that andre probably has to be home too.

cal takes a couple steps towards his house before turning around and quickly placing a kiss on andre’s cheek. before andre can even process what happened, cal’s running inside his house and yelling bye.

andre’s older brother told andre santa wasn’t real when he was seven. now, andre makes sure cal never tells his siblings that santa doesn’t exist. he can’t let anyone else go through the heartbreak little him went through.

(it’s the same with the easter bunny and the tooth fairy. when cal hugs his parents after they get him and his siblings gifts, he just tells the kids that he’s so happy about the presents he had to hug somebody.)

cal would pull andre in to kiss him, wrapping a finger or two around the cold metal and tugging forward. when he kisses down andre’s neck and chest, the silver would brush against his cheek and send shivers down his spine.

andre watches cal’s dogtags jingle in his face when the younger boy straddles his lap. he thinks the metal looks nice between cal’s pale skin and the dark bruises that decorate his body.

when they’re laying down, staring at the ceiling or staring at each other, they fiddle with the other’s necklace. they run their fingertips over their names and blood types. they memorize each other’s numbers. the chains get caught on each other sometimes, which makes the both of them laugh.
