cal writing a song for andre as a birthday gift.

after all the kriegman festivities calm down and the boys are tired from chris’ party, they head back to cal’s house. in the corner of the room sits cal’s guitar with a broken string and scratch marks.

cal stares at it. andre ignores it at first, but soon curiosity overtakes him.

“what’s up with you and that guitar?”

cal’s face goes red. how does he tell andre that he wrote a goddamn song for him? the fear of andre leaving, calling him a fag and walking out, makes cal shiver. there’s no way he can ignore it now, though. not after andre asked about it.

he grabs the instrument and mutters something.

“huh?” andre asks, nose scrunched up in confusion.

“i wrote you something, dickhead.”

andre looks surprised but nods nonetheless, encouraging cal to go on.

as cal starts playing, multiple notes are wrong or out of tune and his voice is shaky. when he’s done, though, andre tells him to put the guitar down and tackles him. his arms envelope the younger boy, and the two of them erupt into laughter.

“that was fucking amazing, cal.” he grabs cal’s face and stares into his eyes, a calm in the middle of their messing around. “dead serious. i loved it.”

they both know what andre means. he loves cal. he won’t say it, but they know the love is underneath his words and laced into his voice.

alex being an art kid.

he's his art teacher's favorite student. his assignments are hung on the classroom's walls and bragged about to any student who asks about them. his notebooks are filled with doodles and colored pencils. the ends of his fingers are constantly stained with charcoal.

there's an art museum near alex's school that's planning an exhibit to show off local talent, and alex's teacher signs him up before he can say no. he at least gets to pick which pieces go in: a watercolor painting of a sunflower field in their town, an intricate drawing of his parents when he had forced them to pose for him a while ago, and a sculpture he made of a certain person from his past.

he hadn't expected anyone to come to the exhibition (well, other than his parents and eric at least). when he walked towards his own pieces, he spotted a familiar mop of blond hair. john.

"this me?" john asked, pointing straight at the sculpture.

alex's face flushed bright red. it was. no matter how long ago their friendship had broken apart, they had never grown hostile towards one another, but alex worried john would hate him after this. to be fair, it was alex's feelings that pushed john away. why wouldn't he be disgusted now?

"it looks beautiful." john turned to face alex and laughed. "not just because it's me."

all worries faded when alex saw the grin on john's face. throughout the day, the two would cling to one another, observing other art and sometimes making fun of it. eric joins them around lunchtime, and the three leave together. something about alex's past and present combining is overwhelming, but he loves it.

andre kriegman proudly says the word faggot in any place at any time. cal hides his face because while he knows andre is gay as fuck, no one around them does. they've gotten looks and been told off plenty times, and andre just rolls his eyes.

thinking about how the last thing eric saw was alex pointing a gun at him. alex—his best friend, the person he was in love with, his partner in crime—decided to stop his life mid sentence. whether or not alex thought he was doing the right thing doesn’t matter. eric’s last moments, even if just for a split second, were filled with fear as he stared down the barrel of the weapon alex was holding.
