Squirrels have vibrissae around the nose, on their cheeks, above the eye, and on the throat. They also have some near the wrist and elbow, and a few on the belly and base of the tail. It is believed vibrissae can supplement short-distance vision, letting the animal sense fine details of texture and easily navigate complex terrain, like forests.
