There are two versions of this. The first one that I rewrote for the fanfic before finishing the final chapter and an alternate version I wrote after it was done.

The reason I changed the first one was because of three reasons.

1: I came up with the 3 bullet idea later into writing, after I had written it, and I thought it was better than just a random amount.

2: With what happens right after, I didn’t want it to feel contrived. Like, she couldn’t run out, because then what happens next wouldn’t be able to happen, but I wasn’t sure that if she started shooting, she’d stop for a reason other than a new threat or running out of bullets. It just felt weird to stop randomly.

3: I don’t think that’s how physics works??

And the reason I didn’t use the alternate version, even though I was pretty proud of the writing was that I thought the image of Ellie trapped under the corpse would be more impactful generally. A little more bleak and sad and fit with the story a bit more.
