Maybe if a prettier, more naive person

with lighter skin

and a whiter smile

and brighter eyes

stood where I did

they’d be surprised.

But I, being none of those things

yet so desperately desiring all of them,

was the one who stood victim

to the sea of masks.

And as I looked from one curled smirk

to another condescending stare,

there wasn’t a single ounce of

surprise in my body that I couldn’t find

one look of sympathy.

Eyes surrounded me like laughing gas in the trenches

I did the only thing I could think to do.

Make myself smaller.

Smaller than their mocking looks could grasp,

smaller than their hateful smiles could bite,

shedding my tongue.

Then my eyes.

Then my skin.

Until all that was left was bare bones and the only things

I knew we all shared.

And that quivering pile

of marrow and blood and tissue

was so much smaller than those towering giants of bigotry

that none of them could hear

them rattle out

“I pray that those like me will forgive me for the crime of being small”.

It was forgotten in the wind,

like the rest of them.
