-kevin is a nerd/freak, no way he's friends with Radford and isn't a nerd, bro def has a fixation on sonic the hedgehog but only owns 06 (he borrows other games from rad)

- streber is not an engineer but a theater prop maker, he enjoys the stage and probably was in a robotics club in college but engineering/ robotics was not something he wanted to go into directly. He dose prop commissions and is a teacher assistant at an elementary school.

-streber is great at math and calculations, but my boy can't read/spell well.

- streber likes to fidget with Kevin's hands

-kevin likes to just flop on top of streber. Streber likes the pressure. Kevin's like a cold weighted blanket, and streber is a heating pad.

- streber struggles with depression, it's been a year since Bob and while he's doing better, he struggles with not feeling anything sometimes, he's nervous on how his response to his trauma isn't like others. He kinda pretends it didn't happen and continues on, and only really thinks about it when he's alone at night. (Based on my own experiences with grieving a lost one)

- streber has mixed feelings about people who survived Bob, he never blamed them but he's just is extremely upset he couldn't get the same treatment from that monster. He stopped going to support groups and just dose 1 on 1 therapy.

- streber lived with his parents for a while after getting out of the hospital (the rats stayed with Leon 💪) , and kinda just wanted to rot in his bed, but eventually went to some sort of support. Mainly because of fears of going to the mental hospital (yes, again,based on irl experiences)

-streber refused to talk to news outlets regarding the incident.

- he fluctuates wanting to get a prosthetic arm to not wanting to.

-kevin is on depression and anxiety meds. (Literally hc he has the same as me, bro take them everyday or else bad shit happens!!! )

- Kevin doesn't talk about work when he's not at work, it makes him pissed, mainly because the most interesting thing is skid & pump, police, teens stealing, or killers/demons

- Kevin hates work and dose experience fear of "god, what I'm if I go into day and I die" but the anxiety of having to get a new job and change his norm over powers his fear of death.

- streber bites Kevin, like just a stress and comfort thing, Kevin is okay with it. Streber kinda bites his arm sometimes

- streber and Kevin rent out apartments, they don't live together.

-streber loves his rat children. We got Socrates🐀, motor oil🐀, and Mr. Girl🐀!!

- Kevin had a love at first sight kinda thing but didn't act on his feelings, mainly because he likes to get to know people first before asking them out and bc work has him in a choke hold.

- Kevin would like a pet cat but.... Work 😔

- they met because of Radford 💪 the real hero of spooky month's 18-30 year olds 🫡.

- streber became pretty good friends with Kevin at first then he fell for him, bro just loves cringe fail men (and women). Kevin was beefing with children, no way your gonna find a better boy failure /silly

- streber disassociates during slasher films. He still loves horror and Halloween as it was his comfort growing up, but Bob left a stain that will forever haunt him.

-streber's favorite horror movies are silent & psychological horror.

- Kevin isn't a huge fan of horror movies but he appreciates "Dave made a maze" & probably "Willard", he's like " Dave just like me fr!!!" (Go watch the movie, it free on Tubi 😎)

- both can't drive, streber takes the bus, Kevin takes his bike.

I've gotten a hold of a very rare issue of Nintendo Dream from October 2017, containing an interview with the Splatoon developers. like seriously, i hadn't seen any documentation of this anywhere. HUGE huge thanks to @squidhominid, who spent Too Much Money to buy a copy and scan it!! Since a lot of it is formatted in blurbs like what's pictured above, I'd been unsure how to organize and share translations...I've decided I will gradually share snippets of it like so and compile it all later. Please be patient. Translation under the cut.

In relation to the characters from Story Mode The Rule-abiding Octarian Army

---Is Octavio a DJ and a general? Inoue: Well, his name is General DJ Octavio (laughs). He commands the Octarian army, so naturally he's a general. [[TN: Octavio's JP name includes "General" rather than just "DJ Octavio" like in english.]] ---Going off of that, there are other ranks, right? Amano: That's right. The Octarians as a species act seriously, so if they didn't have ranks they wouldn't be able to work properly. (laughs) Inoue: Originally, we made Octavio as a character as a pair to Cap'n Cuttlefish on the Inkling's side. Now as for why Octavio is an octopus that holds wasabi sticks... the act of "grating" wasabi made us think of "scratching", and "scratching" made us think of "DJ"...So he came to be both a general and a DJ. [[TN: takowasa, or octopus and wasabi paired together, is a popular izakaya snack. Same goes for atarime, (cuttlefish's JP name) dried squid. It's supposed to be like a snack showdown.]] Nogami: The Octarians are led by music. Octavio makes his own music to control them. Inoue: The music tells them to move and work according to the rules (laughs). ---So, for him as a general, is the music just for controlling the Octarians? Or does he enjoy it? Amano: It is for leadership, with that 'duntz duntz' sort of tempo. So I think for him, he sees the popularity and influence of the Squid Sisters as something that has a military-like controlling power. ---Is Cap'n Cuttlefish unable to turn into squid form, and can Octavio not turn into humanoid form? Amano: Cuttlefish can probably transform and produce some ink, but not like he could in his younger years. It's like when your grandpa says he's gonna do a squat, and he can kind of do it, but not really... it's like that. Inoue: Octavio became unable to take on his humanoid form due to an injury he got long ago. In a Sunken Scroll in S1, you can see a figure who appears to be Octavio before he was injured.

[[TN: This has to be the true origin to the information of Octavio being unable to take on humanoid form! I was troubled by the fact that when this info was brought up by the writers of nintendo dream in that 2018 issue in a way that made it sound like obvious information, they didn't say when or where they heard it...but this is it.]]

How do Inklings and Octolings bathe?

some headcanons+doodles about how i think inklings and octolings (inkfish) bathe, taking the water weakness into account. I think it's boring to ignore the water weakness and it is undeniably canon, see this post for more info!

I've heard ideas like ink-based piping or attachments that change water as it comes out into ink, but imo the former sounds expensive to install everywhere, most species aren't ink based and like water, and even inklings and octolings still use water. The latter seems too... magical?

I also wanted to keep it simple. high pressure mist showers or bath bombs are modern inventions, but sitting at the edge of a hot spring and wiping ones body down with a damp sea sponge is something i can imagine an inkling doing 1000 years ago if they had that bathing culture.

These are just a few ideas. The way we humans bathe differs depending on culture and time, and even the individual, and I'm sure there would be truth to that for inkfish too.

(final note, suction cup teeth on inklings aren't canon LOL but since its a trait some species of real squids have, i think there would be inklings that have it too.) anyway if you want to adopt these headcanons, then please do<3

Disclaimer: Content warnings for Discussions of Xenophobia, Racism and Transmisogyny. This is not at all meant to be a hit piece for Finn or anyone who likes Finn. I love Finn, hence why i'm writing all about the said unfortunate implications of Finn's characterization, so we can acknowledge them and act accordingly.

Firstly, we have to talk about the said characterization.

Finn is the crown-tail betta fish violinist of Bottom Feeders, the celtic rock band of Splatoon 2, and has also been featured in Riot Act's "No Plan Survives". Finn, due to her stubborn personality, and how she does things in her own way, frequently clashes with the other members of her band, leading to the band nearly dissolving on several instances. [X] She has been portrayed as getting physical towards other members of her band (namely Tangle) as depicted in the art above, which has led the fandom to speculate this is Finn showing aggression due to being a betta, (a ""male"" betta to be specific, getting to that)

A thing to note about Finn is that although in canon she has been referenced in a feminine way (through Beika), in betta fish it is the males, not females that have the colorful, long fins, which has made her trans-coded.

So basically we have a possibly trans woman character who has darker skin and is implied to be celtic/Irish due to her genre. Let's unpack the implications of portraying her through her aggression.

Black-Coding and Finn

Black characters are at times portrayed as angry, overly hostile and aggressive in dominant media due to systematic racism and prejudice we exist in. These depictions have a long racist history, and been used to justify racist practices by portraying black people as more primitive, more susceptible to their base instincts, compared to the logical, calm white race. So you can see one of the big reasons to why it is so imporant to not portray Finn as always angry and ready to fight as a darker skinned character even if canon text doesn't per say treat her as a black person.

For the record, there is nothing wrong with Black people, or Finn for that matter, to be angry, or to have fights. It is through constant depiction of a black or black-coded character like that which is harmful and only contibutes to and reinforces marginalization of black people.

Trans-Coding and Finn

Another issue starts with portraying Finn as aggressive due to her nature as a "biologically male betta". For the uninitiated, bettas are known to be Siamese Fighting Fish for a reason, and male bettas are especially known for being more aggressive than their female counterparts, due to them not being able to live with other males. However, the fact they show less aggression doesn't mean that females show no aggression. Female betta will establish hierarchies and enforce them, and bite an chase each other as males do to do so. [X] I tell you all this to point out how it is no justification to portray Finn's aggression as a result of her being amab, because any narrative with Finn that portrays that aggression as innate to Finn's male nature is dangerously close to to transmisogynist/TERF rhetoric that it is men's biological innate nature to be aggressive, and trans women who are biologically male are inherently aggressive and a threat.

Irish-Coding and Finn

Then you might say, Finn is Irish, that might be it, the Angry Irish streotype (which is possibly what the devs were going for). Even if anti-Irish sentiment has died down considerably (especially compared to anti-black or anti-trans sentiment) and even if due to that this is the arguably most ""innocent"" portrayal of Finn's aggression, i still think it needs to be acknowledged that Irish prone to anger and violence is a colonial streotype perpetuated by Britain against the Irish who were resisting their colonization, portraying them as rude and barbarous to their expense. Although this streotype arguably lost it's bite (depends on who's arguing), it still persists to this day, and that alone makes it important to acknowledge.

Finn and Fandom

So what now? Splatoon has a very delicate to portray character that is often mishandled due to her "aggression"?

Well, Let's rip the bandaid off.

Even if Finn is portrayed as fighting her bandmates, the canon text never calls Finn aggressive. The Haikara Walker blurb never uses the word aggressive. The word they use to describe Finn is stubborn. According to canonical text, Finn gets into fights because she is stubborn, and wants things to be done in her way. That in itself does not at all imply she is aggressive. I emphasize this, because I want you to understand Finn as constantly aggressive and hostile and ready to start fights is a fandom invention. You can interpret the band fight to imply Finn is an aggressive person, sure, but it would be your interpretation of the White Day art at the end of the day (in which Tangle is also fighting back but you know, it's only Finn who is characterized in a certain way).

The fact charitable interpretations of Finn are rarer than they should be is a problem.

I think it is a thing in itself to be examined that "Finn is acting like a betta" is also fandom attribution to Finn. In Splatoon, although characters might have animal impulses (inklings and octolings) they are not defined by their animal traits. Another example to an "aggressive fish" in Splatoon canon is Kikura, whose species is a very aggressive cichlid, and yet Kikura is not portrayed with any aggression, making us see it is not canon but fanon that portrays Finn this way.

And even if it was concrete canon that Finn was influenced by her nature as a betta or male betta for that matter, or somewhat imply Finn is an inherently aggressive person, it would be fandom's responsibility to navigate that with utmost care as to not further marginalize marginalized people and not contribute to it.

The fact we are having this talk shows we've failed in this or that reality.

Why is Finn's passion for music making is not a driving force in her characterization? The fact she wants to share the music she loves? The fact she is described to be glamorous? Why has this one debatable aspect of Finn's characterization became all there is to Finn when it has such unfortunate implications no matter which angle you take? I leave that question up to you, and I ask you to be more mindful of all of things.
