summary: a bad day at work? jay is there to make it better  word count: 557 words

one near mishap with the coffee machine, two wrongly heard orders and three complaining customers later, you were finally done with your shift. 

things were hectic beyond imagination at the cafe you worked part time at; there were plenty of times where you were about to call it quits, cry or maybe do those two at the same time. you needed the money though, so you were sucking it up. 

a rather not-so-covert “ahem” snapped you out of your trance and you cut your gaze to jay. 

jay, your senior in school, was also somehow a barista here (if that was even a thing). it was a chance meeting that you had him as your business major and also quite the surprise when you saw him as you walked into the cafe to start part time work. 

jay waved you over with a small smile on his face, a drink in his hand. 

“is there anything else for me to do?” you asked apprehensively, afraid of what was about to come out from his mouth. you had messed up and was pretty much frazzled when there were that many customers gawking behind the counter for their drink. yet jay was so patient with you, you actually felt bad when he cleaned up after your figurative and literal messes

he handed the drink (he knew your favorite drink?) to you, and you took it, mind running miles per hour. 

“good job today.” 

your mind came to a screeching halt at his praise. “i…what?” 

“you did well. i know how sudden it is to have one man down especially on monday mornings, but we coped! i can handle things until the afternoon shift comes, which is in about 30 minutes and…” 

jay listed out the different things that happened but all you could focus on was the cup in your hands and how warm you felt. you wanted to speak up to express your gratitude, but your voice got caught in your throat and the day’s exhaustion hit you full force. 

“hey, hey. it’s okay.” jay reached out to wipe your tears and you winced internally at how silly you were for crying over something inevitable. you slightly backed away, hastily brushing his hands away, “i’m sorry. i shouldn’t be crying.”

jay stared at you for a second, before a light-hearted chuckle escaped him. “you didn’t do anything wrong.” 

a smile touched his lips, “if anything i should be apologizing to you for not informing you beforehand.” 

you sniffled, “i just thought…i don’t know. i messed up and it was busy…i feel so bad i can’t do as much because i lack experience, unlike the other staff.” 

“don’t say that. you were doing so well.” grinning from ear to ear, he gave you a playful nudge, “you aren’t going to quit the cafe right? we need someone like you, plus doing shifts alongside you is fun, hectic or not.” 

you burst out laughing at the sudden change of emotions and you found yourself nodding, “yeah. i’m not planning to quit this part-time job anytime soon.” 

jay held up a finger, “wait a moment.” he dashed behind the counter and pushed a bagged pastry into your other hand. “take this and have a good rest, okay?” his words set your heart fluttering and you hesitantly nodded. 

“see you tomorrow, then.”

“Do you only come here just to sleep?” Kevin raised an eyebrow (knowing full well your eyes were closed) as you snuggled closer to his side and his arms instinctively wrapped tighter around your shoulders. 

“We’re not even halfway through the movie.” 

When you gave a huff in response, Kevin jokingly rolled his eyes, “I’m starting to wonder if you’re dating me or the bed. You sleepy bear.” You half-heartedly punched his shoulder, before kissing the same spot, causing him to chuckle at your antics. 

“‘M not sleepy, just…it’s comfortable around you…” Kevin gently patted the back of your head, watching as your chest rose and fell steadily beside him. Reaching out with his right hand, he tucked the blanket securely around you, a smile on his lips mirroring yours. 

“Okay, okay. We’ll finish this some other day.” Kevin relented, adjusting both your bodies so that he was holding you flushed against his chest. Staring at your peaceful form for a bit more, he leaned towards you, peppering kisses all over your face. 

“I’m glad to be your safe space.”

Jungwon peeked out from underneath the blankets, eyeing your studious form at your working desk. He’d been very patient (it’s already been more than an hour), waiting (rolling around in bed, upset) with the promise of cuddles after you had finished revising. 

“Are you done with your revision?” He inched closer to the side of the bed, moving stealthily towards you. “I just started, silly kitty.” You hadn’t turned around to reply him, but Jungwon could picture the eye-roll you gave him. He silently huffed, opting to sit in the empty chair beside you instead of lying down in your bed.

“How much more studying do you have?” Jungwon squinted at the diagrams on your laptop screen. A pause, then a sigh, “A lot.” He reached out, fingers curling around your forearm but frowned at your distinct lack of attention. 

You lightly steered him away from your study space with a nudge, prying his death grip on your forearm off. So back he was, staring at you scribbling away. Swinging himself back and forth on the roller chair, his eyes darted back and forth from you and the ticking clock at the corner of your desk. 

Tail swishing in annoyance, he chewed the inside of his cheek as silence seemed to stretch out endlessly—poor Jungwon, he just wanted his hourly dose of attention from you. 

“Are you done yet?” His ears perked up when you closed your textbook. “No.” Your one worded replies weren’t going to deter him; he was getting as desperate as he could get. “Please, I want—” A single glance from you was enough to make him back down, lips immediately zipping shut. 

“Jungwon, quit it! I’m trying to focus here! You’ve been fidgeting around me and I’m having a hard time trying to memorize! Do you know how stressed I am?!” 

Now it was Jungwon’s turn to get upset. 

“You’ve been out studying like crazy, and I know you’re more than capable of getting a good grade! You promised me! You said we could spend the weekends together! I haven’t seen you all week, you know?” Jungwon exhaled, annoyance ebbing out of his body as soon as he finished his rant. 

His ears flattened at the top of his head: why weren’t you saying anything? You looked at him, guilt expressed visibly in the way your shoulders sagged. “I’m sorry I let my stress get the better of me. It wasn’t my intention to get mad at you, Wonnie.” 

Without hesitation, Jungwon pulled you into a hug, stroking your back just like how you would when comforting him. “I’m sorry for annoying you too. I was getting antsy.” His larger frame held you and he basked in your presence, a smile erupting on his face. 

“Are we good? I’m sincerely sorry again.” You pulled away, hands patting the crown of his head. Jungwon purred, finally content because you were with him. Disregarding your apology, he cuddled you close.

“Mmm, just hold me now. Everything else can wait.”

meanwhile you’re relaxing on his bed eating popcorn and scrolling through disney+ trying to figure out which princess movie to re-watch

heeseung has his mic off, but you can both still hear his teammates communicating and yelling call outs to each other

but the thing is these are just random people he’s playing with

so when he unmutes to tell his team his current position, you listen carefully to what they say

listen, you’re a bit overprotective

in your defence that’s your man and if they say anything mean to him they’re dead to you and you’ll probably figure out some way to get them banned

however you’re even more taken aback when one of the girls on his team goes “damn, whoever’s playing reyna (heeseung would be a reyna main fight me), your voice is hot as fuck.”

you whip your head towards heeseung, narrowing your eyes at the screen threateningly as if the random player could see you
