So one day a dwarf is talking to a human and finally realizes that when humans say woman, they generally mean “person who is theoretically capable of childbirth” because for whatever reason, humans assign social expectations based genital differences. (What a fucked up culture, the dwarf thinks.) But hey, better communication! So the next time the dwarf introduces theirself, they say, oh, by the way, I am what you call a “woman.”

And the trade negotiations just stop. They just stop cold. The tall people insist on speaking to the man, they insist on talking to the lady dwarf about all sorts of irrelevant bullshit, like recipes and childrearing and perfume

so the dwarf goes back home, enraged

and is like “BTW guess what happened, we’re all just going to be men forever now as far as the tall ones are concerned”

and everyone is justly horrified at this barbarism but they all agree to do whatever  it takes to squeeze those tall bastards for all the resources they are worth

and the dwarves get surlier, and the trade agreements less generous

and the tall people are all “what a miserable and greedy race”

but really they’re just still nursing a grudge about how goddamn backwards and sexist the tall people are

because their best negotiator, one of their sacred cave people, got snubbed the instant she said she was capable of childbirth - and a mortal insult like that can never be forgiven

When you are alone and have a heart attack. What are you gonna do then?

Take a 2 minute break and read this:

Let's say it's 5:25 pm and you're driving home after an unusually hard day's work.

You are really tired and frustrated. All of a sudden your chest pains. They are starting to radiate in the arm and jaw. It feels like being stabbed in the chest and heart. You're only a few miles away from the nearest hospital or home.

Unfortunately you don't know if you can make it..

Maybe you've taken CPR training, but the person running the course hasn't told you how to help yourself.

How do you survive a heart attack when you're alone when it happens? A person who is feeling weak and whose heart is beating hard has only about 10 seconds before losing consciousness.

1. But you can help yourself by coughing repeatedly and very strongly! Deep breaths before every cough. Coughing should be repeated every second until you arrive at the hospital or until your heart starts to beat normally.

2. Deep breathing gives oxygen to your lungs and coughing movements boost the heart and blood circulation. Heart pressure also helps to restore a normal heartbeat. Here's how cardiac arrest victims can make it to the hospital for the right treatment

3. Cardiologists say if someone gets this message and passes it on to 10 people, we can expect to save at least one life.

4. FOR WOMEN: You should know that women have additional and different symptoms. Rarely have crushing chest pain or pain in the arms. Often have indigestion and tightness across the back at the bra line plus sudden fatigue.

one of the best ways i’ve found to combat that inherent depressive pessimism without veering into toxic positivity territory is simply the phrase “i’m open to the possibility”

this particularly works with anything negative i’ve forecasted. “i woke up feeling like shit today, so my day is gonna suck” isn’t a particularly helpful thought, but “it’s a great day to be alive!!!!!” feels hollow and insincere when i have a pounding headache & am running on three hours of sleep

instead i’ll tell myself, “i really don’t feel good right now, but i’m open to the possibility that coffee and breakfast might perk me up a bit.” or “i’m in a lot of pain today, but i’m open to the possibility that my workday might still have fun parts despite that”

sometimes, when your impulse is to slam the door on anything good, but you’re not exactly up to going out & hunting it down yourself, leaving the door open just a crack makes all the difference

An Interesting Demonstration Of How The Human Brain Works.

An interesting demonstration of how the human brain works.

But also something of a lesson regarding perception, and the unreliability of subjective perspective versus objective reality.

You can be extremely certain about how you perceive the world, your "lived experience," that which you "feel it in my heart." But that doesn't mean it's actually true. And it doesn't mean we have to endorse it, or ignore or outright deny objective reality.

That's a "you" thing, not a "we" thing.

i think "it takes a village" shouldn't be just "to raise a child". we should understand it takes a village to do literally everything we do. all day every day. without our communities we would not have drinking water or electricity or clean streets or food or shelter or anything. we cannot do any thing alone. we just can't. and with that comes the fact that you are not alone. you already have a community, seek to be an active part of it, you will feel better. reach out and thank them, they're happy to have you too. i promise. it takes a village to live.

My point is - You don't have force yourself to use it. It's not a solution that is the best for you and that's ok. By forcing yourself to use public transport which doesn't suit your needs you only grow resentment not just for this mean of transportation but for people who activly promote it. I get that their message might sometimes sound "extreme" and you might feel villified by not adhering to the means of life of "fuck cars" community, but their message is not ment to be against you. Their message is against car dependence. Their message is against forms of urban planning that don't take into account anyone but the car users. Their message is agains the viewpoint that treats people who don't own a car as inferior. And finally public transport was not ment to be a magic solution for any given person. Public transport is a solution for traffic jams.

No actually it's shit to act like public transport, the most common example being trains, is this perfect magical answer to everything. It's shit to act like cars are some symbol of capitalist evil and always would be in any society. And it's shit to pretend that's not a real problem. Yeah I know the people saying things like that aren't in any position to make political changes based on those convictions. That doesn't mean it's not harmful.

I have been trying my best for a really long time to get better at using public transport, but it has cemented the fact that that's never going to be reliable as the only option for me. I know how to go on a specific route on the metro by myself. That's it. And sometimes even that is impossible. Me and my support worker have recently been working on going just the opposite way on the same line, and I'm having massive trouble getting my head around it. There's no way I could do this regularly and also get through whatever activity I was travelling for. And I know there are people who have bigger problems with it than me as well.

Just stop. How the hell would you feel if supposed leftists, people who were supposed to be on your side and for your rights and such, were glorifying something that causes you massive problems and demonising solutions you sometimes desperately need? I'm not evil because I sometimes need to take a taxi or be driven somewhere by my mum, who is my carer, when she is willing and able (something that I know is a privilege and I'm very grateful for).

Hi OP,

Public transport was never ment to be a one size fits all solution. Public transport is great because it gives people options. You don’t have to use that option, but knowing that it is there if you need it is very important.

That’s why funding pubic transit is so critical.

+ To repeat what other person said - if more people will use public transit (because it’s reliable, and safe and they want to, not because they have to) you will have less traffic jams on your daily routes.

Reliable public transit benefits all, not just people who use it.

No actually it's shit to act like public transport, the most common example being trains, is this perfect magical answer to everything. It's shit to act like cars are some symbol of capitalist evil and always would be in any society. And it's shit to pretend that's not a real problem. Insane. The IDF Bombed The Aid Group Three Separate Times In Order To Kill All 7 Volunteers
It is misleading to describe the @WCKitchen killing as an airstrike (singular). In actual fact 3 vehicles were targeted, with the first & last being over 2.4km apart. The IDF decided to make 3 targeted strikes, not one. Geolocation from @m_osint and @ChrisOsieck #Gaza pic.twitter.com/epvtqNR4uU

I love how Internet is a tool you can use for finding a community around you. And if you don't find what you look for - build it yourself.

Be it a bookclub, various DIY/crafting communities, sport club, or board game club, or just whatever. There are people who enjoy your hobbies. You just need to reach them.

Something that literally changed my life was working with a friend on a coding thing. He was helping me create an auto rig script and was trying to explain something to me but his words were just turning into static in my brain. I was tired and confused and there was so many new concepts happening.

I could feel myself working toward a crying meltdown and was getting preemptively ashamed of what was about to happen when he said, “Hey, are you someone who benefits from breaks?”

It broke me.

Did I benefit from breaks? I didn’t know. I’d never taken them.

When a problem frustrated or upset me I just gritted my teeth and plowed through the emotional distress because eventually if you batter and flail at something long enough you figure it out. So what if you get bruised on the way.

I viscerally remembered in that moment being forced to sit at the table late into the night with my dad screaming at me, trying to understand math. I remembered taking that with me into adulthood and having breakdowns every week trying to understand coding. I could have taken a break? Would it help? I didn’t know! I’d never taken one!

“Yes,” I told him. We paused our call. I ate lunch. I focused on other stuff for half an hour. I came back in a significantly better state of mind, and the thing he’d been trying to explain had been gently cooking in the back of my head and seemed easier to understand.

Now when I find myself gritting my teeth at problems I can hear his gentle voice asking if I benefit from breaks. Yes, dear god, yes why did I never get taught breaks? Why was the only way I knew to keep suffering until something worked?

I was relating to this same friend recently my roadtrip to the redwoods with my wife. “We stopped every hour or so to get out and stretch our legs and switch drivers. It was really nice. When I was a kid we’d just drive twelve hours straight and not stop for anything, just gas. We’d eat in the car and power through.”

He gave a wry smile, immediately connecting the mindset of my parents on a road trip to what they’d instilled in me about brute forcing through discomfort. “Do you benefit from breaks?” he echoed, drawing my attention to it, making me smile with the same sad acknowledgement.

Take breaks. You’re allowed. You don’t have to slam into problems over and over and over, let yourself rest. It will get easier. Take. Breaks.

Boop Description

I haven't seen a boop image(?) description going around yet! It might be buried somewhere in my dash backlog and I haven't gotten to it yet, but why take that chance?

When you click the button to Boop someone, a cartoon cat's paw will swipe over your screen from one of three directions: Left, right, and top. The paw will be one of three colors: White with pink toe beans, orange with brown toe beans, or black with charcoal toe beans.

Furthermore, if you go for a Super Boop (hover over the Boop button by someone's name until it starts to spin), three paws will appear to boop the screen, with one from each direction. All three paws will be the same color, though.

Finally, it looks like there's some extra shenanigans going on if you hover over the boop button by someone's name before the paw(s) that just booped your screen completely disappears? I haven't investigated this much yet, though.
