A Study Of Haikyuu!! Character Names

A Study of Haikyuu!! Character Names

Ok guys I donā€™t know if a post like this has gone around, maybe it has, maybe I am saying things people already know because Iā€™m new to this fandom, but seriously. I had noticed that Hinataā€™s and Kageyamaā€™s names were particularly clever in terms of reflecting their characters so I started actually digging into what all the kanji for all the names mean and guys this is delicious. I canā€™t help it, I have to share.

Hinata Shouyou: Hinataā€™s name is way too obvious but also really cute. His last name ę—„å‘ (Hinata) literally means ā€œto face the sunā€ or ā€œto head towards the sunā€ which, yes. While ę—„å‘ (Hinata) is the first hit I get when I do the turn-these-kana-into-kanji thing, making me think itā€™s pretty common, his given name ēæ”陽 (Shouyou) seems to not be, which means the kanji were particularly chosen (like most of these names, honestly). ēæ” (shou) means to soar, and 陽 (you) means sunshine. So Hinataā€™s just sunshine all over.

Kageyama Tobio: 影山 (Kageyama) literally means shadowed mountain, or dark mountain, with å½± being shadow (or silhouette) and å±± being mountain. Basically a massive presence. Meanwhile, 飛雄 (Tobio) is another completely made up name, with 飛 (tobi) meaning to fly, and 雄 (o) meaningā€¦ well, man. But itā€™s not your normal ā€˜manā€™ character, which is ē”·. The character in Tobioā€™s name also has the meaning of ā€˜heroā€™ behind it. Also, I think there is some of the concept ofĀ ā€œthe shade exists because of the sun,ā€ or like, maybe thatā€™s just me, I donā€™t know.

Sawamura Daichi: ę¾¤ę‘ (Sawamura) is, again, not unheard of as a last name. It literally means ā€œswamp villageā€ which comes across a little oddly to me, especially since 大地 (Daichi) means ā€œgreat earth,ā€ which fits him well, being the foundation of the team.

Sugawara Koushi: This one, like Daichiā€™s name, is a little more obtuse. The last name at least. č…åŽŸ (Sugawara) breaks down to mean ā€œsedge field.ā€ Sedge (I had to look it up) is apparently a plant that grows in wet areas. Likeā€¦. swamps!?? I dunno, ok. But his first name 孝ę”Æ (Koushi) is once again a completely made up name. 孝 (kou) is the character for filial devotion/piety/respect, whereas ę”Æ (shi) means to support. This kills me ok.

Azumane Asahi: I actually started this post because of Asahi and Noya in particular because THIS KILLS ME THE MOST (except for Ukai but Iā€™ll get there) so ok. Ok. ę±å³° (Azumane) breaks down into ę± (east) and å³° (peak/summit), so weā€™re talking about the tip top of an eastern mountain ok. His given name, ꗭ, means daybreak, or the sun rising.

Nishinoya Yuu: Are you even ready for this I was not. Noyaā€™s kanji are č„æč°· (nishinoya) which lit translate toā€¦ č„æ (west) č°· (valley). Plus then we throw in his given name of 夕 (yuu) which, guys, guys, it means ā€œevening.ā€ They are ABSOLUTE OPPOSITES how is this not the most fucking perfect thing ughh.

Tanaka Ryuunosuke: Comparatively, Tanaka gets a pretty boring name. I mean, his last name ē”°äø (tanaka) (middle of the rice field) is one of the most common last names in Japan, so I guess the purpose was to try to make him an everyman, in a sense. Although he does have 龍 (ryuu), or ā€œdragon,ā€ in his first name, which I think feeds the character, he also has 之介 (nosuke) at the end, which is another common suffix for boys and sounds very traditional.

Tsukishima Kei: I find Tsukishimaā€™s name actually quite interesting. I think everyone already knows about how he has ꜈ (tsuki) ā€œmoonā€ in his last name, naturally, making him Hinataā€™s opposite. 島 (shima), just to be thorough, means ā€œisland.ā€ Meanwhile, what I find interesting is that his first name, 蛍 (kei), is the character for fireflies. I think that suits his personality to a Tā€”lights on, lights off.Ā

Yamaguchi Tadashi: Yamaguchi also has a super common last name: 山口 (yamaguchi) literally means the entrance to the mountain. More importantly, his first name, åæ  (tadashi), is the character for loyalty and devotion.

Iā€™m gonna skip a few here because I could do everybodyā€™s names but there are like a million characters, so Iā€™m just gonna make sure to also doā€¦

Shimizu Kiyoko: ęø…ę°“ (shimizu) is an interesting last name because thereā€™s a temple in Kyoto by the name of ęø…ę°“åÆŗ, though itā€™s pronounced Kiyomizudera. What probably isnā€™t surprising is that ęø… (shi) means ā€œpurity,ā€ and ę°“ (mizu) means water. Her given name completely echoes the intent of her last name, with ę½” (kiyo) meaning ā€œundefiled/pure/cleanā€, and 子 (ko) meaning ā€œgirl/child.ā€ ā€œkoā€ is also an incredibly traditional sounding piece of girlsā€™ names.

Yachi Hitoka: č°·åœ° (yachi) are both kanji that have come up in other names; Daichiā€™s and Noyaā€™s, actually. Once again, č°· (ya) is valley, and 地 (chi) is earth. Meanwhile, 仁 (hito) means ā€œbenevolence/humanity/virtueā€, while 花 (ka) means ā€œflowerā€.

Ok last but not least this really kills me itā€™s so blatant

Ukai Keishin: Totally 100% made up name here. ēƒé¤Š (ukai) breaks down into ēƒ (u) which means crow and 養 (I assume this is ā€˜kaiā€™ but tbh it doesnā€™t look like thatā€™s a normal reading) which means to ā€œbring up/foster/nurture.ā€ So his last name means to be a father figure to crows. Then his first name ē¹‹åæƒ (keishin) breaks down to ē¹‹ (kei) ā€œto fasten/tieā€ and åæƒ (shin) ā€œheart/mind/soulā€ so this guyā€™s name QUITE LITERALLY means that he brings the spirits of his little baby crows together. I MEAN.

And obligatory statement: take this all with a grain of salt, I know Japanese well enough that I can say this is close to being accurate but I can still make mistakes, and I welcome any comments or corrections or thoughts!

Thinking about how differently the west and the east profess the same thing.

Hey, I'm going to the store now. Let me know if you need anything. I love you. / I'm going out now, where's your shopping list?

No, you're amazing! You're precious, they don't know what they're talking about! I know it was mean, but but don't let it bother you, okay? Stop crying, please? / They said that? Retards. Like c'mon, have they looked at themselves in the mirror? Donkeys. Now wash your face, it's all red.

I know I was angry, and I said some awful things, but... forgive me? / Hey. Here's some peeled fruit. Stop sulking, okay?

I think that it's because the west sees love as a a form of affirmation- I love you, here these flowers are for you. I'm here for you. I see you. Stay safe- and the east sees it as a form of expression- I bought you pens because you ran out, now give me those chocolates. Come on, I'll talk to those idiots for you. You're working hard, stop it before you get stupider than you are- and I think it's beautiful.

Thank you for compiling this <33

Skip Google for Research

As Google has worked to overtake the internet, its search algorithm has not just gotten worse.Ā  It has been designed to prioritize advertisers and popular pages often times excluding pages and content that better matches your search termsĀ

As a writer in need of information for my stories, I find this unacceptable.Ā  As a proponent of availability of information so the populace can actually educate itself, it is unforgivable.

Below is a concise list of useful research sites compiled by Edward Clark over on Facebook. I was familiar with some, but not all of these.

ā‚

Google is so powerful that it ā€œhidesā€ other search systems from us. We just donā€™t know the existence of most of them. Meanwhile, there are still a huge number of excellent searchers in the world who specialize in books, science, other smart information. Keep a list of sites you never heard of.

www.refseek.com - Academic Resource Search. More than a billion sources: encyclopedia, monographies, magazines.

www.worldcat.org - a search for the contents of 20 thousand worldwide libraries. Find out where lies the nearest rare book you need.

https://link.springer.com - access to more than 10 million scientific documents: books, articles, research protocols.

www.bioline.org.br is a library of scientific bioscience journals published in developing countries.

http://repec.org - volunteers from 102 countries have collected almost 4 million publications on economics and related science.

www.science.gov is an American state search engine on 2200+ scientific sites. More than 200 million articles are indexed.

www.pdfdrive.com is the largest website for free download of books in PDF format. Claiming over 225 million names.

www.base-search.net is one of the most powerful researches on academic studies texts. More than 100 million scientific documents, 70% of them are free
