Rule one of fandom: there are some things that only exist for us.

Don’t send actors fics

Don’t give them explicit art ever

Don’t tag them in rpf questions or theories

Don’t try to bring them into fandom drama of any kind

Don’t hold them responsible for what the producers and writers decide

They’re still people.  They have private lives, which do not include fandom.

One of the things that I love about Sam is how his apparent size changes. The man is large, but he often curls in on himself, making himself look smaller. He stuffs his hands in his pockets, pulling his shoulders in and down, his eyes go wide and he gives shy or uncertain little smiles or worried frowns and it makes him look smaller and younger. You forget that he's the tallest person in the room or how wide his shoulders are. Then at some point he'll stand up, square back his shoulders and breath deeply with a firm set to his jaw and suddenly he's massive and powerful and you fully believe that he once garrotted a vampire's head clean off. He can go from absolute baby brother to hulking beast in seconds and then sink right back into himself and leave you reeling because you know that potential is in him all the time, but it's not how he chooses to be.

Sometimes I feel like the only person in this fandom who's glad neither Sam nor Dean smoked in the show (cigarettes or anything else), doesn't headcanon that they did, wouldn't want to see it in a HBO version, and doesn't enjoy reading fic or seeing art where they do. 😂

Immediate disclaimer: Your headcanon is not my headcanon and that's okay! Headcanon and let headcanon! I'm not at all trying to shut down the smoking posts. Everyone can see it how they want, it makes no actual difference to me. While it was another post that prompted me to write this one, I'm not doing it as a way to shame that person or something, I just didn't want to get all negative on the post they're having fun with. I'm also not judging anyone who does smoke. Presumably we're grown-ass adults who can have differing opinions and understand that it means fuck-all in the grand scheme of things.

I personally cannot stand cigarettes. Not the smoke itself nor the smell of it lingering on a person, the taste of it in their mouth, the way it permeates everything and chokes the air I'm breathing whether I like it or not. I grew up with a smoking parent, and even though she never did it in the same room as me, the smell was always repellant. I also grew up in the era just before it started becoming illegal in pubs and restaurants and certain public spaces, so I was well and truly over it from the start. I see no romance in it. I get how the visual can be appealing, but it's too connected to real life sense memories for me, and that immediately ruins the vibe of whatever I'm reading or viewing.

Honestly, I'm glad they didn't smoke in the show. It would've tainted a lot for me. And I think it's easier to imagine cigarettes into the scenario than it would be to imagine them out of it.

Surely there are people out there who feel the same way? But I only ever see posts in favour of (for example, since it's almost always him) Dean being a smoker, and long reblog lists of people agreeing. But considering how statistics have been falling steadily all over the planet for a long time, is it just a matter of smokers and non-smokers liking the idea of Dean smoking because it's inoffensive as a matter of fiction? Or are non-smokers who don't like the idea nervous to speak up? Or just don't care enough to?

The thoughts are thinky, that's for sure.

Oh, and my arguments against Sam or Dean smoking:

They'd never get the jump on any monster with a decent sniffer if they went around reeking of cigarettes.

Smoking dulls your sense of smell, so they'd be less likely to notice things like sulfur that give away the presence of certain monsters.

Running away from or after monsters would be a problem with your lung capacity compromised.

Supernatural Poll: Cigarette Smoking

I often see headcanon posts about SPN characters, mostly Dean, being cigarette smokers. It made me wonder if there's a correlation.

so real actually. I feel like I'm in a weird position because I don't think I believe they've been together for real and all that, but at the same time it's so fun to act like it has happened/it's happening lmao. that's why I enjoy some lighthearted tinhat content or some j2 fics. and I think as long as you're respectful and keep the tinhatting contained here in our safe tumblr bubble so the people involved remain as clueless and unaffected as possible, then it's fine !!
