19. give me another chance

standing in front of the miya household made you realize how bad of a choice this was and that maybe you shouldâve just let your cousin do this alone. it was already weird that your cousin was comfortable enough to just invite herself into their house with no announcement, but it was too late since fumiko rang the bell and held your hand to keep you in place.
you heard shuffling from behind the door and took out your phone to act as if you were busy, âyouâre such a pussy.â fumiko whispered beside you. when you turned your head to speak back, the door in front of you was already open and atsumu was staring at you two with wide and shocked eyes.
âwhat are ya both doing here?â what shocked you was the non-spiteful tone he used. wasnât he mad about the whole ayaka situation?
âgreetings to you too miya, are your parents home?â fumiko jumped right in to answer him, pushing him aside to enter their home, pulling you along with her. âuh no? they went grocery shopping but theyâll be back in a few minutes. why are ya asking?â
you looked around the house to see if he was lying but were met with two pairs of eyes staring at you and your cousin.
suna and osamu.
you immediately turned your head around to avoid a certain pair of eyes, keeping yourself busy with staring expectantly at the blond twin. âmy father had some questions for your parents but couldnât come himself, so he sent me as his envoy, and i took y/n as my company.â what a smooth liar your cousin was.
âif thatâs the case ya both can just wait inside. we were just chatting along.â he pointed at his two friends sitting at the couch.
you could feel sunaâs stare at you as you walked over to the other couch with fumiko; away from the trio. there was a very awkward silence between all of you that you could even hear the clock ticking above the television. however atsumu broke the silence with his question, âwhy couldnât your father just giveâ em a call?â
you could feel fumiko holding back a snarky comment with how she squeezed your hand to keep herself back, so you interjected yourself, âuncle is a very busy man. your parents arenât his only employees and he had other important stuff to attend to. and yâknow fumiko was raised for these stuff so why not send her instead?â
atsumu tentatively nodded at your reply, eyes still staring at fumiko who only gave him a forded smile on her face. while they were in their own world, you were staring at the trio in a questioning way because you werenât expecting them to beâŠcomplaint?
âi know what youâre thinking y/nâ osamu spoke, but this time it was directed at you. âyes weâre a littleâŠdispleased lets say, but at the end fumiko is your family and we agreed that going back to the old way would be better.â
you were still wary of them but nonetheless accepted his answer and continued with your silent presence, fully aware of the eyes that hadnât left your figure since the second you stepped into the house.
suna hasnât stopped staring since youâve came. he knows you werenât pleased by their presence, hell he bet even the dumber twin was aware of this. but he just couldnât stop looking at you, his guilt eating him up.
why was he always so quick on jumping into conclusions? he was actually looking forward to your date but had to go screw it up with his man pride, his sister wouldâve been ashamed of him. he wanted to find an opening to talk to you, explain himself, and maybe even ask for a third chance? he honestly lost count of how many times heâs wronged you, and he knew the chances of redeeming himself were probably slim to none, still he wasnât one to give up.
when you announced that you wanted to grab some water, suna grabbed the chance and stood up in front of you to guide you to the kitchen. he could see osamu smirking from the corner if his eye. suna walked in front of you until you both reached the kitchen and suna leaned against the fridge staring at you pour yourself a glass of water.
âyâknow you can just tell me whatâs on your mind because your stare is not making me comfortable at all.â ouch, guess be deserved that.
âuh- about the date nightââ his hand went behind his neck, a sign of him being nervous.
ââthereâs nothing to talk about that night. you stood me up and i let you go. im not looking for more trouble.â you said, eyes still on your glass of water. and when you were about to walk out of the kitchen, suna grabbed you wrist and pulled with a bit too much force, resulting in your body fully leaning against his.
suna could feel the heat rising to the tip of his ears, this was the closest he had gotten to you, and although he wouldâve preferred it under better circumstances, he would take what he could get.
âplease give me chance to explain, even though i donât deserve a second of your time.â he whispered against your ear, eyes closed. you could feel his breathing against your neck and it was taking too much self-restraint to not loose your stance at that moment.
âwhy should i spend my time listening to your excuses suna? youâll just keep apologizing over and over again.â you breathed out, mentally clapping for your voice not shaking.
he took a step back to turn you to face him, his eyes not leaving your figure once. âi know i donât deserve anything from you after how iâve treated you, but please just give me a chance to explain.â
you were avoiding meeting his eyes, because you knew the second you looked into them youâd let him back in. yet some part of you still wanted to learn why he has stood you up that day, so you allowed him to explain. âfine, you have one minute.â
he released a breath he didnât know he was holding, finally finding the chance to ask for forgiveness. he knows how embarrassing his reason is going to sound. âi- that day ayaka saw you with this dude and um- asked me if i was meeting up with you and when i said yes, she told me that she saw you two hugging and iââ
âwhat?â you were honestly baffled. he ditched you because he was jealous? and what did ayaka exactly tell him? did ayaka tell her parents too? cause that wouldâve been very bad.
âlet me get this straight. you couldnât let your man pride go for one day and ask me who the guy was? you do know heâs likeâthe same age as my father?â this time you looked up to meet his gaze only to see he was sheepishly rubbing his neck looking anywhere but you.
ââŠi do. i just learned about it yesterday, and didnât know how to approach you.â
âyou do know how ridiculous this all sounds right?â
ââŠim sorry.â he was looking at you now, and as much as you wanted to ignore his apologies, you could see the sincerity behind his eyes and it was killing you.
âit hurts that you trust ayakaâs word over mine, when she doesnât even know me enough to know my circle of friends.â you watched as nodded, a frown taking over his features.
âi know my mistake now and no amount of apologies will be enough to fix my way of treating you. but, could you please give me another chance? let me prove to you im worthy of your time and trust, please.â
you looked at him, biting your bottom lip while contemplating his apology. he was nervous to say the least, he could feel his palms sweating with the silence you gave him. heâs never been one to apologize this desperately but there was just something with you that made him want to never leave your side, despite how his actions proved otherwise. heâs just never felt like this before and didnât know how to approach it.
ââŠalright. but one last chance. i swear to god if you screw this one up, its over.â you didnât know which action caught you more off guard, the huge smile he gave you, or the way he tightly hugged you. slowly yet gently you raised you arms to hug him back, hand unconsciously reaching to caress his hair. âdonât screw this up rintarou.â you whispered in his ear as you left his embrace to join everyone back in the living room, your voice leaving him a blushing mess in the kitchen.
when you returned back to take your place next to fumiko, you realize she wasnât in the room and nor was atsumu. âwhere did they go?â you asked osamu as you took your seat with sunaâs eyes still on you.
âi think they went to check something in our parents office.â osamu shrugged.
you closed your eyes to heave a sigh, even though she assured you she hated him, you couldnât shrug of the tension they had between them. âthey better not be making out.â you muttered under your breath as you took your phone out to keep yourself busy while waiting for the twins parents.
you missed the way osamu cringed after hearing your silent statement.

âLady Y/n, His Grace The Duke has asked for your presence; we need to get you ready.â
âTwo more minutes, please, Mary. I look utterly terrible at the moment. Let me at least deem myself more presentable.â
âAlright, Lady Y/n. Please knock on the door once youâre pleasant. Weâll be waiting here.â
âThank you Mary.â
You gazed at yourself in the mirror, hands gripping the patterned gold sink; how was this possible? Your face, which had been filthy and bloodied, appeared younger and more alive than it had in a long time. Your hair, which had been cut short only a few days before, was returned to its long, silky state, falling down to your waist. The image upset you to your core; you felt sick and wanted to puke on the spot. It was all too familiar, reminding you of the times you were blindly in love with someone. You couldn't take it anymore, but how was this even possible? You were executed only last morning in front of hundreds of people, including the royal family and the alleged love of your life.
Just thinking about him caused your heart to ache.
How could you still care for him after all he's done to you and your family?
You had loved him your entire life, and as the daughter of the Duke L/n, who was nothing but devoted to the royal line, you were groomed to be the empress, to govern the country with the one and only Prince Shoto Todoroki.
You were completely enchanted when you first saw him in the garden at his portion of the royal palace. You'd never encountered a kid like him before, his two-toned hair unrivaled by the other suitors, his eyes revealing two separate stories if the other stared deep enough, his scar which just added to his authenticity, fitting perfectly on his face. You'd heard about the scar that graced his face, detracting from his blessing of a look, but you'd never seen it that way. It was what made him the kid you fell in love with, according to you; on the contrary, you believed it made him seem even better.
All you wanted to do was show him how much you loved him, and you got your opportunity when the kingdom organized a tournament for all the high-class daughters around the nation.
You never pictured yourself to be the clinging kind, yet that is precisely what you turned out to be. You would constantly make yourself accessible in his spare time, so you could join his garden stroll, get your clothes tailored to look nice at his side, and study everything to satisfy him and his hobbies. But, unfortunately, it never happened that way; what you believed was showing him your affection actually served to intensify his contempt for you.
Your alone moments would consist of him ignoring you, meal times being unnoticed, and your feelings being brushed away, but that never stopped you. You were determined to show him how much you cared, never giving up despite his actions, and you somehow made it to the top two positions with Momo Yaoyorozu, the daughter of a well-known Marquess.
You hadn't paid much attention to Shoto's interactions with the other contestants since your main thought was to find a method to satisfy him; you supposed that's why you hadn't noticed his lingering gazes at her or how kind he was when near her. You only understood this when it was revealed that Momo Yaoyorozu would become Empress, with you, the Queen, standing at her side.
It crushed your heart into millions of pieces to watch them so joyfully, completely, and passionately in love, just like you were. But you never grumbled; even if you couldn't be the owner of his heart, all you wanted was for him to be happy, and if Momo did that, you'd do everything to keep it that way.
And you performed your job; because you were raised to be the Empress, you helped Momo learn the ropes, led her through difficult decisions, and helped her maintain a decent image among the commoners. Why did you suffer this destiny while you were properly doing your duties as Queen? Never in a million years would you have predicted the events that led to your death. Who would have guessed that Momo Yaoyorozu would be poisoned while three months pregnant?
They never discovered the true perpetrator; you remember this because the picture of your father being found guilty was still extremely clear in your memory. With an inexplicable emotion, you had pulled the diamond-encrusted hairpin out of your hair to stab the love of your life in his abdomen, and well...you can anticipate what happened next.
Even after this reincarnation, the feeling of rage never went away, especially when your father was wrongfully accused. You weren't raised in the most loving household; your mother died when you were a young girl, and your father drifted apart after that. You couldn't, however, blame him and your mother's death for the fallout of your father-daughter connection. You had never tried to reach out to him and had never shown affection to him, which is why you would establish that relationship with him on this second shot at life.
You had the ideal strategy in mind. In your former life, you were always a highly industrious person, and in addition to lessons on becoming the ideal Empress, you also got training in sword fighting and archery. You've been sitting in the bathtub for hours, stress-eating your nails while devising a strategy since you shut yourself in your bedchamber's bathroom. Because you don't have any siblings, you're the only one who can carry on the L/n Dukedom, which influenced your selection. You would become a knight in order to become the family's head, never dealing with Shoto Todoroki again. It was a flawless plan, and you had the perfect reason; nothing could possibly go wrong.
âMary, you can come in now!â

You were now going along your home's hall, on your way to eat breakfast with your father, as he had asked. You took in every picture on the walls as well as the view of your family's expansive garden. You'd missed all of this, the peaceful sense that came with returning home. Despite the fact that the royal palace was considerably more gorgeous than anywhere else, you would immediately and unequivocally choose your own house. Even the artwork of your family (including your mother), which you had despised, was suddenly something you craved. Was it necessary to die and be given a second opportunity to appreciate the value of everything?
Apparently, it had.
When you entered the room, your father was already seated at the head of the table, reading through a book. You knocked on the door twice to make your presence aware, âYou called for me, father?â
âOh, I did, dear! Why donât you join me for breakfast this morning, hm? Come sit next to me.â he pointed at the seat beside him. You tried your best not to let your shocked expression slip through your mask. Why was he acting so kind? âMy my, did you get a haircut? It suits you quite well.â
âThank you, father.â you took the empty seat and watched as the maids brought in the vast options of food and placed them on the table. You had trimmed your hair after all, memories of him toying with your long hair and braiding it once flashed through your mind when you glanced in the mirror, so you did what was required. You'd cut it yourself, and it was now just one inch below your shoulders.
âMay I ask what the event is?â
âEvent? Canât I just enjoy some nice breakfast with my daughter? You had me worried for the past few days when you fainted all of a suddenââ
âFainted?â
âOh, you must have hit your head as well, darling. Youâve been sleeping for a few days now; all the doctors I called couldnât tell us what the problem was. This breakfast isnât even near to what you need to eat right now!â
Had you fainted? Ah, it mustâve been after your execution. But still, your father had been worried, for you? So this was an excellent opportunity to start building the relationship you so desired. You would not make the same mistakes as your past life, which was a great place to start. âFather, I wanted to talk to you about something.â you said as you placed food on your plate.
âWhat is it, dear?â
âI want to become the head of this house.â
You watched as he put his fork down to lean against his chair, hands holding each other resting on the table, âWhy is that?â
âI want to become a knight and become the head, father. There is no one else to continue the lineage.â
He sighed, scratching the back of his neck, âYou need to attend the competition Y/n, you got the invite; there is no way we could decline it.â You were frozen on your spot. How could you forget it? You were seventeen right now, which meant the competition to become the Empress would start in one month. How could you be so stupid to think you could smoothly live your life away from his radar? âBut I donât want to become the Empress, father. I want to stay here.â
âAre you sure? You were talking about wanting to become the Empress since you were a little child, my dear. Why the sudden change of heart?â
Now how were you supposed to answer that?
âOh, father, I actually lived this life before and knew you, and I am going to die, so Iâm trying to prevent that.â
Yeah, that wouldnât work.
âI thought about this family, father. Iâm an only child, and I want this house to continue for more generations. Please grant me this wish.â
âYou know I canâtââ you slumped in your seat, your lips pouting, ââbut we can make a deal.â
âA deal?â you perked up at the sound of that.
âYes. If you lose the competition, I will grant you your wish. But I donât want you to give up from the beginning. You should make it to the finals and be on the last two standing, and then when you come home, I will allow you to become the head of this family.â
Last two standing? That was how you reached your end! You needed to stay away from Shoto as much as possible; you couldnât wait till the finals. âThe finals? Surely I donât have to stay that longââ
âMy decision is final. If you accept it, I will grant your wish.â
You nibbled on your lower lip as you considered this offer. There were two possible outcomes to the events. One, you reach the finals and beg Shoto not to pick you as Queen, telling him your request, or two, the same events unfold, but he disregards your wishes and crowns you Queen, only for you to resume your previous life.
Alternatively, an entirely other path might be established in which you are eliminated from the start and lose your chances at a happy existence. After weighing the options, it appeared like accepting your father's proposal would be the wiser choice.
You could accomplish it because the genius in you devised a different strategy. After the first day, you would approach Shoto and offer your assistance in selecting the right Empress because you knew everyone from your previous life; you could remove them by exposing their weaknesses to him while keeping Momo for the long haul. And, with your assistance, he will fulfill your goal of becoming the family head. Wasn't that a fairly good plan?
âAlright, father, I accept your offer.â you sighed.
