chapter thirteen: #humbleking previous — masterlist — next
Thanks to some nifty Googling, you managed to track Ishida down to his house, where, according to locals, he'd been hiding out to "deal with the grief of losing his business." Now, you conspicuously sat at a bus stop opposite to the building, the latest copy of The Mainichi up til your nose and comically large glasses framing your mask-clad face.
You spot Spider-Man from the corner of your eye, perched calmly on top of the roof of a nearby midrise, using dramatically big binoculars to see through an open window. Your plan was simple: you'd wait til Ishida was all alone, and then corner him in the courtyard of the house, causing a minimal amount of public disturbance as per your request. The last thing you needed was a crowd of people watching you drag a seemingly normal man to the police station.
Atsumu lifts his hand and flashes a peace sign at you. A rather lame signal, but a signal nonetheless. You dial Ishida's home number, and wait. He picks up after a couple of rings.
"Hi, is this Mr. Ishida? I'm calling from Nippon Life Insurance. You took out three claims last week?"
"Yes! Yes, I did," he says, trying to weakly hide the excitement in my voice. Jeez, he was down so bad for that cheque that he hadn't even bothered to ask your name.
"Okay, great, I just need you to fill up some documents. I've had a delivery boy send them over to you," and at this, you pause to wave at Spider-Man, who nods, promptly shoots a web-shooter and lands gracefully in front of his doorstep.
"...And you'll need to come to your doorstep to pick them up. Please send me scanned copies of them to this number as well as my email," you say breezily, standing up and quickly crossing the road.
Ishida's voice travels down from the open window as you push his creaky gate open to stand in front of it, blocking his exit route in case he decides to make a run for it.
"I'm getting them right now," Ishida replies, and you can hear the sound of shuffling and incoming footsteps.
Spider-Man gives you a small nod as you square your shoulders and press your back against the gate.
Still on the phone, his jaw drops to the floor when he sees the two of you at his front door. (You realise you're still in the hideous sunglasses a moment too late and decide to roll with them.)
"Yusuke Ishida," you speak into the phone as he clutches onto his for dear life.
"You're under arrest," Spider-Man completes.

02. dead bff’s new bff
you closed your phone as you leaned back against the wall taking a deep breath. you hadn’t expected seeing akito, being the twin of your dead best friend, it didn’t exactly bring happy memories.
the loathing feeling he held for you was reasonable in your opinion, after all you didn’t go to her funeral and you were her best friend even with the miles separating you two.
but still all of that didn’t justify the way he acted towards ayaka, it pained you that he hadn’t come in terms with the suicide, but that didn’t mean he could blame it on others.
leaving your room to walk down the stairs, you saw ayaka still sitting on the couch where you had left her. you heaved a sigh, homura had told you about her situation and you somewhat sympathized with her.
“are you hungry? i was planning on cooking some spaghetti.”
walking in to the kitchen you took out the needed materials and began by heating the water beforehand.
“oh, i wouldn’t want to be a bother—“
“you’re not being a bother. now c’mon take a seat, i want to talk to you about something.”
“o-okay.”
letting the spaghetti cook you started preparing the sauce at the same time holding a conversation with her.
“so i don’t know if you’re comfortable with talking about this, but i know about your home situation...homura told me about it”
she looked up at you with wide eyes, eyes reflecting the feeling of shock and betrayal.
“oh um, what exactly did she say?”
“she only explained it briefly so don’t worry, i just know that you stay at your friends a lot. that must be tiring.”
“oh its not! i’ve gotten used to it, they really help me out a lot.” she smiled.
“that’s really thoughtful of them.”
“yeah, they’ve really helped me with a lot.”
with that sentence being the last you guys awkwardly silent; ayaka waiting for the food while you cooke it.
after the food was done you opened your mouth to speak again, “look this may come off as too much but if you want you can stay here.” you propose finally, turning around and placing the food on the table.
“what?”
“i mean my parents are always away and are rarely home so it gets lonely most times, if you want you can permanently stay here instead of switching places all the time.” you shrugged, the girl in front of you supported a very shocked expression, “you don’t have to say yes, i know we barely know each other but homura always talked about you that i feel like we’re not strangers. my door’s always open.”
“i-is that really okay with you?” it seemed like she was considering it with the way she started playing with her fingers.
“yeah it is.”
“...o-okay, i think i’d like that.” she sighed.
you gave a genuine smile at that, “alright, you can use anything i have, and tomorrow or the other day we can get your stuff. oh you should also let your friends know, we wouldn’t want them to be worried now.” you winked.

- i hope this wasn’t confusing!! back when y/n lived in hyogo she was best friends with akito and homura but then had to move away, then some things happened that led her to commit suicide but y/n couldn’t come due to personal reasons.
- ayaka is the person homura met after y/n left and they became best friends as well, but for some reason akito blames her for the death of his twin (?) and ayaka stays with the miya twins or suna time to time because her home life is abusive
- anyways the first interaction between suna and y/n will occur next chapter!! i haven’t exactly planned how it will be but we’ll see ig :))

03. a very chaotic first day
you were in an internal crisis. this was definitely not how you planned your first day to go. if the first lesson you missed was a normal one that would at least be more acceptable. but an honors class which was government and politics? that was a no no.
you were sprinting so fast, you were worried for a second that you missed the school; which, thank the gods, you didn’t.
you were thankful you texted ayaka, since she was the one who woke you out of your dream of school starting this late. for a top student you could be very stupid sometimes.
reaching the school gates, you slowed down a little, but still speed-walking because it was now break time and you had missed the lesson fully. you were now on your way to the class ready with a full blown apology to the teacher hoping she would understand whatever excuse you had up your sleeve.
with a map in your hand that came with the schedule you took yesterday, you tried to find your way not realizing you bumped into someone until they screamed behind you, “fuck— watch where you’re going!”
not turning back you lifted an arm waving it as a sign of apology, “sorry!!”
suna was left standing in the middle of the hallway, half of his water splashed on his blazer. he wasn’t in a good mood already, and now his mood was even worse.
first day of school and your top is already wet.
he couldn’t get a good look at the one at fault since she practically ignored his presence moving on with whatever she was engrossed with.
since he was worried for ayaka last night, he didn’t exactly get the most relaxing sleep. though his teammates kept pestering him about how he was in love with the girl since he was always looking after her, suna always declined them. he has been childhood friends with ayaka for a very long time, their mothers were close as well...before ayaka’s mother passed away that is. and he felt the need to protect her; as a sister to him.
he didn’t get to see her before school started because he had woken up late, but now he was on his way to her, ready to question about the person she had stayed at last night. but the second he took a step forward, his eyes caught the phone laying on the ground. guessing it belonged to the girl that bumped him, he slid it into his pocket to give if he came across her again.
reaching his friends in their usual spot he pulled ayaka to his side by her shoulder and rested his back against the wall. “so princess, ready to explain last night? you had us really worried.”
“suna! ah i will but i need y/n here with me!”
suna turned to look at the twins in front of him, “who’s y/n?”
atsumu shrugged, “i don’t know man, but it think that’s the chick ayaka stayed over at”
“yeah she is! and i want her here so we can explain together.” she pushed suna’s arm off her shoulder to reach for her phone, and three seconds later suna’s pocket started to vibrate. raising a single brow, he reached for the phone to see ayaka’s name flashing on it.
“suna...why do you have y/n’s phone with you?” ayaka looked at him with a puzzled expression.
“oh.”

you didn’t feel so good. it all happened too quick. the trip to the rehab center, the visit to her grave, her mother finding you—
it wasn’t the most comfortable situation; to be in the same car as your dead best friend’s mother, whom you didn’t have the guts to face. even though she had told you she understood your reason for not being able to attend the funeral, you yourself couldn’t accept it. it felt like you betrayed her, your second family; and didn’t want to face them.
however you couldn’t keep it in. “im sorry.” you blurted out, breaking the silence between you two.
she gave you a glance, confusion clouding the motherly eyes, “what are you sorry for my dear?”
you opened your mouth to respond but nothing came out. you couldn’t swallow the lump forming in your throat and next thing you knew gentle tears were streaming down your face. “im sorry i couldn’t come to her funeral. i-i regret to this day and i just—i can’t forgive myself for it. a-and you shouldn’t as well.”
her features softened at your confession, her lips forming a sad smile, “y/n, darling how can i be mad you? asking you to come to her funeral while you were facing so many things was wrong of me, and there’s nothing to forgive because what you did was not wrong but a reasonable action. and i know for a fact homura would understand you too.”
you really wanted to believe her but the sick twisting though in you made you believe otherwise. akito was right, what kind of a friend were you? you could’ve came back to hyogo from time to time to check up on her, make sure she was okay. how didn’t you pick up any clues from her lack of energy whenever you two face-timed? “that’s what you might think but still-”
“no y/n, i am not having this debate with you. it’s not your fault and i hope you learn to accept that. don’t listen to what akito says, he’s taking it harder than any of us did. he still can’t accept the fact that she took her own-” she couldn’t finish the sentence, a broken sob leaving her. she pulled the car over to catch her breath, it was dark outside and driving with a blurry vision could result in an accident. something you didn’t want to experience again.
“im sorry dear, i’ll continue driving in a minute.” she gave you weak smile. “it’s okay auntie suzuki, i would prefer that you continue driving when you feel better anyways.” you reached out to squeeze her hand and she responded back the same way.
“...how’s your mother y/n?” she asked you carefully. it was still a sore subject for you. even after a year your mother hadn’t made much progress in recovery although she was at the best rehab center. “she isn’t exactly doing well...she had a seizure today.” you looked down at your lap, fiddling with your fingers.
“oh—y/n that’s horrible! how did it—how is she doing?”
“i honestly don’t know. it’s like she doesn’t want to get better and i don’t understand why! and i have mo idea how this happened when she’s in a rehab center, maybe she still has connections with her dealers? but isn’t the rehab center supposed to be safe and guarded?” your hands were starting to shake, it was too much to take in. you couldn’t believe your ears when you got the call, you were paralyzed in your spot and for a second you had thought that maybe this was it; this was how you lost your last family member.
hands reached out to keep you steady, bringing your body closer to lay on her chest. she hugged you tightly, “shh it’s going to be okay dear, i know it will be. have you talked to her about it?” you shook your head, leaning further on her chest, “no—she still blames me for his death...” you could hear her sigh as she smoothed out your hair, “don’t believe her y/n, it wasn’t your fault and any person with the right mind can see that. now let’s get you home shall we?”
you nodded, getting back to your original position; leaning agains the window watching the scenery pass by as you guys started to drive back home.

13. a long night ahead
the train back to hyogo was depressing to say the least. with your three best friends clinging to you, their tears staining your hoodie, you couldn’t help up shed a few tears yourself. were you excited to go back? no—like definitely not. there was so much going on there that the only thing you wanted was to stay at miyagi with your friends and chat with fumiko. also, who would’ve thought you’d be on good terms with your cousin whom you hated your whole life? with staying in hyogo for a month now, too many has happened.
it would be a lie to say you weren’t dreading your return, probably to be scolded by the twins about inviting your cousin but all you wanted to do was pack a punch on their faces. suna—rintarou, was also in the list, but at least he had managed to man up and apologize to you which made you put him on on the “watch-out” list. you shouldn’t be anxious about making it home, your own house, but for some reason with all the events that happened, your were nervous to step inside the house where the twins and ayaka were in. and hopefully, about to leave the house for the night. you understood why she was nervous and afraid, but fumiko was your cousin and you both had some intertwined issues you needed to solve and talk about—to fully leave the past behind, and the girl in your home wasn’t going to stop that.
getting out of the train to call for a taxi, your were caught by surprise when you saw rintarou leaning against a lamppost looking around. “what are you doing here?”. startled by your voice he saw you looking at him arms crossed and eyebrows raised. pocketing his phone he left his position and
walked closer to you, “thought i could accompany you back home,” he shrugged, “pick up fumiko on the way i don’t know.”
you were surprised at his request, didn’t he also not like fumiko? blinking twice before gathering your thoughts, you nodded at him. “alright, just don’t get into a fight with her.” pointing at him playfully and followed him towards the car.
the atmosphere in the car was awkward since suna didn’t know how to open up a conversation with you even though you’ve forgiven him. he was really worried when he realized you bad left hyogo. not knowing where you could be, it was safe to say he panicked before he saw the tweets you made indicating you were safe and sound in miyagi and not dead somewhere in a ditch.
even though ayaka had wanted him by her side too, the guilt he felt after those texts didn’t allow him to. he never thought you were also a victim of the same stuff ayaka goes through and the fact that he called you selfish for that? he just didn’t even want to think about it. “so uh, how many more minutes before we reach her house?”
“it’s this one on the right.” you pointed outside the window. parking in front of the house, he watched as you rang the doorbell and walked back to the car when fumiko left the house.
“ugh finally im coming over to yours! i swear to god that girl better be out of that place when i arrive or you’ll have to hold me back-“
“-fumiko.” you gave a tight lipped smile trying to discretely point at the boy next to you.
“-hold me back before i go and hug her! yeah! really missed my dear ayaka!” she said with an over enthusiastic smile on her face, one suna could easily see behind.
“im not stupid you know that right? and she’ll be out of there, we notified her beforehand.”
“could’ve fooled me.” she muttered under her breath. suna chose to ignore her statement and looked at you with a deadpanned expression but all you could do was shrug so he continued to drive to your house while you and fumiko sat silently in your seats; the tension in the car suddenly increasing.
arriving at her home, all you wanted was to spend time with your cousin alone without any other presence in the house. but no—the gods had other plans for you and wanted you to suffer today because the second you entered your house with the two others behind you, you were met with the twins and ayaka having dinner in the kitchen.
taking a deep breath, you closed your eyes to calm your nerves because if one of them even raised their voices at you hell would break inside the household. you were not to be tested with today. “i can see how you told them beforehand, i love how they’re literally acting as if its their own home.” fumiko smiled sarcastically looking at suna from the corner of her eyes while taking her shoes off.
while all that was happening, the other three individuals in the room were looking at you frozen in their place. “hi ayaka! its so lovely to see you here! hope i won’t be a bother to your peaceful environment. the last thing i’d want would be too disturb your peace.” fumiko pouted looking directly at the girl as she walked closer to her but changing her direction the last second to open the fridge.
you and suna were still in the entry, the latter looking at you trying to solve the expression on your face. when you finally moved from your stop to ignore the trio and go upstairs with your bags with fumiko following behind you, suna broke the silence.
“didn’t you guys plan on ayaka staying over at yours tonight?” he crossed his arms leaning against the fridge.
“rin! i was...but turns out they had guests over tonight so we had no other choice!” she stood up to hug him only for it to be one-sided because his attention was on the twins with a serious expression on his face. “then you guys better not complain about fumiko’s presence and further annoy the girl”
atsumu was visibly losing composure and suna knew it was because he was holding his tongue back from saying something to the two girls. “what is it sunarin? ya suddenly like her?”
“i don’t. but that doesn’t change the fact that this isn’t ayaka’s house and the fact that she informed you beforehand of her arrival even though she didn’t need to in the first place is something you should appreciate rather than complain. ”
“...its alright rin. we’ll just hang around here while they’re in y/n’s room! im sure that won’t cause any problems.”
“um no.”
all heads turned around to you as you were walking down the stairs with fumiko behind you. “this is my house ayaka and im not locking myself in my room while you walk around the house. it’s going to be the opposite.”
“its funny how you’re walking around as if you own the place. please.” fumiko continued rolling her eyes behind you.
“watch yer tounge blondie.” atsumu warned her.
“or what piss hair? gonna throw a ball on my face?”
“ya wanna try-“
“alright stop.” osamu stepped in between his twin and the girl, finally building up the courage to open his mouth, obviously avoiding eye contact from you. you looked at suna who still had ayaka stuck on his side looking down like she was afraid.
you sighed, a long night was ahead of you.

was it dumb for you to agree to meet the unknown person half an hour before your date with suna? yes, maybe. but you can’t blame a girl for being curious. you weren’t afraid or anything but you still notified fumiko about your whereabouts just in case something did go wrong.
wrapping the jacket around your fram tighter due to the chilly air you slowly and carefully made your way to the meeting spot on the text. as you reached the place and saw no was there you decided on waiting a few minutes, anxiously tapping your foot and fingers playing with each other. but the silence was broken with the footsteps entering your line of vision, and when you looked up to meet the eyes of the intruder a gasp left your mouth. “ukai? what—what are you doing here? you can’t be seen with me-“
he shut you up with his hand on your mouth, motioning for you to keep your voice down. “im sorry if i scared you with the unknown number. your uncle has connections everywhere so i wanted to be careful.”
taking his hand off your mouth you nodded indicating that you were listening to him. when you looked at him he was trying his best to not look you in the eyes as he was placing his hands in his pockets.
“he plans on stopping the payment for your mom’s rehab.” he said in one breath. eyes wide and mouth open, the only reaction you could give was the fear stricken expression on your face. “wh-what do you mean? why would he do that? we took him to court, he has to pay-“
“do you know who you’re talking about y/n! this is your uncle he has the money and the connections to save him from everything.”
“but if so, why didn’t he do this before? why now of all time?”
“he...he wants your father’s assets.”
“excuse me! who does he think he is!? like hell im going to give them to him, is he out of his mind?” you were frantic, stressed, scared for your future and your mom’s, this was the last thing you needed, last thing you wanted. why did it have to be you?
“look i know you don’t want to but think of it this way. you’ll get a huge amount of money if you sell it and im sure it’ll be enough and more for the rehab and your education-“
“are you actually telling me to consider this? that is the only thing i have left of my father and i’d rather die then let him corrupt the company. you should know its the fact that those assets don’t belong to him that keep the company alive.” you were holding yourself back from crying, you couldn’t let your guard down. your decision was final and nothing was going to change that but it would be a lie if you said the offer was stupid because it could actually help you. but you were too proud and too persistent to let that happen.
“okay, okay i get it alright? if that’s what you think you have to find a way somehow to stop this. you know he’ll never let go until he gets what he wants.”
you started biting your nails; a bad habit you required through the years, “get me a list of his top employees, im going to hope on finding some dirt on him.”
ukai turned you around by your shoulders to look you in the eye, “are you sure you want to play this game? its risky.”
“i don’t care at this point, my mother’s health and this family’s dignity matters the most. im not gonna let some scum win.”
“alright. i’ll get you the list.” he patted your head and moved to hug you. ukai was like the brother you never had.
when you father was alive, ukai was his right hand man and due to that, you spent a lot of time growing up with him. even though he worked for your uncle now (due to familial issues) he still helped you as much as he could, and you really appreciated it. you just hoped his end wouldn’t be bad if he were to ever get caught.
when you finally arrived at suna’s house it was 10 minutes late. you hoped he wouldn’t get mad for that cause you were actually looking forward for the date, but all that cam crashing down once you looked inside through the window to see suna and ayaka sitting on the couch cuddling while watching a movie.
did he forget? no that couldn’t be, he was the one who asked you wasn’t he? but then why was he busy as if your date was never supposed to happen in the first place? were you a joke to him? you internally shook your head at the multiple questions surfacing in your head and rather the calling him out for what he did, you decided on going home and making the choice that would relieve you of half of your daily stress. you didn’t want to be connected to them by any means at this point. fumiko would be proud.
