today has been a horrible day, to say the least.

to start, the main coffee machine decided that today is the only perfect day to spit out boiling hot coffee on kuroo’s apron, barely missing his face.

then, his manager told him off for not closing the shop properly last night even though he wasn’t the one in charge of closing.

and as if that’s not enough, some kid threw all of his breakfast up on the bathroom floor. great. just great.

as he mops up the last remnants of said disaster, kuroo grumbles to himself, cursing out whichever god decided to make him their jester today.

thankfully, though, today’s morning rush wasn’t too busy. it could’ve turn out worse. kuroo hopes it won’t.

the familiar sound of the cafe’s bell dings, signaling a new customer’s entrance.

“kuroo!” yaku rushes to his side half a second later, a suspicious grin plastered across his face. the blond speaks in a hushed manner, but he’s barely able to contain his glee. “your crush is here.”

kuroo feels his heart skip. dammit. he groans. “oh piss off will you? i don’t ha-”

before he could finish his sentence, his work buddy shoves him towards the front of the cafe, mouthing the words ‘you owe me one’ and gave him a thumbs up, picking up the mopping job kuroo left off.

standing on the other side of the register was you, his supposed ‘crush’. okay fine, his actual crush.

truth be told, kuroo never even mentioned his little—yes, little—crush on you, but his work buddy picked it up anyway. you’re embarrassingly obvious about it m and it’s getting annoying, yaku had said during a morning shift one day, but kuroo begs to differ.

“hey,” you smile. kuroo feels his heart stutter.

you know what? maybe today isn’t that bad after all.

“hey to you too,” kuroo flashes his signature grin, all the unfortunate events of this morning long already forgotten. “the usual?”

the smile on your lips widens. “you know it.”

as you dig around your canvas tote to look for your card, kuroo lets his gaze linger on you for a few seconds longer than he usually does.

you look really nice today, even if you’re only wearing a regular pair of dark-wash jeans and a simple t-shirt. yaku’s evil smirk pops in his head; kuroo exhales, annoyed.

a small voice nags at the back of his head; one that he’s been trying to ignore for the past few weeks.

sure, you always laugh at his dumb jokes while you wait for him to make your coffee. and sure, the way you smile at him never fail to make his legs feel like jelly, but surely you would never feel the same as he does, right?

ah, fuck it.

“hey um,” kuroo clears his throat, eyes flicking up at you before immediately returning to the chipped paint on the cash register.

you pause from rummaging through your bag. eyebrows raised, you urge him to continue.

“do you wanna hang out sometime? like- not right now of course. this friday maybe? if you want to, that is. it’s okay if you don’t, really.” kuroo feels a droplet of sweat trickling down his nape. oh god. yaku would definitely laugh at him if he’s here.

he braces himself for the worst—a rejection, or a laugh, maybe—but it never came. he looks up and finds you frozen on the spot. “uh-”

“i- yeah,” you breathe, rubbing the tender spot behind your ear as you let out a laugh. “sorry, i just didn’t expect that.”

his heart sinks; yeah, okay, maybe blurting it all out in the middle of his work shift isn’t the brightest idea he’s ever had.

“it’s okay, i’m the one who should be apologizing.” he laughs. “i totally understand, don’t worry.”

at this, your eyes widen. “wait no, i’m not rejecting you, i do want to go out with you.” you shake your head, grinning. “i just didn’t expect you to make the move- i actually wanted to ask you out today.”

wait a minute. “huh?”

you press your lips together, refusing to meet his eyes as your cheeks heat up, embarrassed. “please don’t make me say it twice.”

kuroo thanks the heavens in his head. he’ll gladly let go of all of the previous grudges he’s had in his life if this is actually happening and it’s not all just some stupid lucid daydream of his.

“wait, wait.” kuroo blinks, dumbfounded. “so what you’re saying is—you like me? and you wanna go out with me?”

there is a twinkle in your eyes as you laugh; it sends pleasant tingles down his spine. you smile, fond.

“yeah, basically.”

it’s been over twenty minutes since he messed up (yet somehow still pulled through) his confession, and kuroo is still sporting a dazed look on his face.

“dude,” yaku feigns disgust, “we get it, you’re in love, but please stop spilling the damn milk.”

kuroo rolls his eyes, “stop being dramatic. i’m not spilling anything.”

his friend raises an eyebrow at him as he starts humming. this guy is so whipped and they haven’t even gone on a date yet, yaku scoffs, amused.

“did you even ask for their number yet?” the blond jokes, glancing at kuroo as he rinses his hands.

the dark-haired boy freezes. “oh fuck.”
