Obsessed with the duality of a hero who is constantly worried that they’re secretly the villain, always reflecting and questioning their methods as they fight the status quo. And yet we have their arch-nemesis, the villain, the ultimate antagonist; And THEY are absolutely convinced they’re the hero, they’re the Good Guy, with zero self-awareness, who is reaching out to our misguided protagonist, because they see themselves as wielding the Power of Friendship.

Only for our hero to see the hypocrisy of what they’re fighting and realize then and there that no, I am NOT the villain, and I AM right; And they are right for rebuking the ‘compassion’ of their villain, because sometimes you do have to fight. Sometimes you’ve gotta be ruthless in the face of performative kindness, and sometimes it’s okay and deserved. It’s the way the doubt leads to self awareness that is in itself a reassurance to the audience, whereas the blind confidence of the antagonist translates into an arrogant red flag.

He’s actually quite banally, disappointingly, simple; He’s just a violent bigot. An entitled manchild who can’t take no for an answer. His contradictions come from the fact that he’s a hypocrite. He thinks he’s All That, but he isn’t really and so many of his presumptions of importance and inherent superiority are based in the fact that he’s a white dude.

This last part quite fits with Funny Valentine.

            I guess it’s fitting I described Belos as a serial killer in my last post, because he’s someone who’s murdered so many… He’s got this charm, this supposed sense of mystique, so people are attracted to the aura and speculate, wondering, what goes on in his head? What motivates him? What sort of tragedy or pain compels the killer, how could you be driven to go so far? Is he not haunted, a man of contradictions because he’s so complex? And in the end…

I've already written about how Belos feels a twisted solidarity towards Luz and this can be seen in King's Tide. He tells Luz that he wants to save her and tries to convince her to go with him to the Human Realm but when she rejects him, Belos decides to petrify her, seeing this as an act of solidarity and mercy because he believes that Luz was corrupted by witches and he wants to save her soul.

Later in Watching and Dreaming after being defeated by Luz, Belos tries to manipulate her by pretending to have a curse like Eda but after seeing that Luz doesn't believe him and that the boiling rain is melting him, Belos tells Luz that she should save him because If she doesn't, this act would make her just as evil as the witches and later Belos tell her they are human and humans must help each other and they are better than witches but Luz doesn't move and she lets Eda, King and Raine step on him.

One of the main messages of The Owl House is weirds stick together, that is, that no matter if you are weird you can always find a place to belong and Belos believes that this ideology is only for him and humans in general and that others that they aren't human don't deserve that solidarity. After all for Belos humans have to stick together.

Something quite interesting is that the places where Curious Cat tries to possess Ruby and possesses Neo are the specific places that represent the main fights that Ruby and Neo have always had.

When CC tries to possess Ruby, the place he chooses to try to possess Ruby is her chest, in other words, in her heart. Ruby is a person who has trouble expressing her emotions (expressing her heart) because she always represses what she feels because she thinks that her duty as a leader and being the perfect hunter like her mother is much more important than her own personal feelings and others have unintentionally reinforced this idea to the point that Ruby takes it to an extreme. Metaphorically Ruby suppresses her heart in favor of living up to what she believes others expect of her.

Later when CC possesses Neo the place he chooses to possess her is through her mouth. Neo has always struggled to be heard, to have the freedom to express what she thinks the way she wants. Her parents forced her to talk, they forced her to use a text-to-speech app that she hated so much, and the reason she finally sides with Roman is because he's the first person in her entire life to really listen to her and not force her to express herself but respects Neo's way of expressing herself. Metaphorically Neo has been trying to express herself as a desperate way to be understood and not have to try to measure up to people who don't even bother trying to understand her.

CC realizes all of the above and tries to use it to his advantage: he knows that Ruby is emotionally devastated by everything that has happened to her and he offers to replace her heart (her emotions and identity) with his own but fails for intervention of Little and Neo. After failing with Ruby, he is going to possess Neo when he finds out that she no longer has a purpose to continue living because revenge was the only thing that inspired her to continue living and when she succeeds, Neo realizes that no matter what doing anything will bring her back Roman (the only person who really heard her) so she breaks down and as a result, CC manages to possess her forcing Neo to speak with a voice that is not her own but someone else's just as it happened in her past, only instead of being a text-to-speech app, it is a being that not only controls her voice but also controls her body and heart.
