Dear freshman me:
Don’t do your best. If you’re not learning then you’re not doing your job. Do your best because you wanna get better, not because you wanna be better than someone else.

Grades at art school
I’ve found that caring about marks/classes has actually hindered my ability to learn. Doing what’s fun actually puts me in a position where I actually have to learn something to be able to apply it immediately. Therefore aiming for about 70% or “good enough” is a good goal for me unless I,
a) actually want to put in the effort
b) need the mark/need to learn the content
Otherwise pursuing the things I like to draw (a buncha animated cats, the occasional human/anatomy) and making personal projects has been able to teach me so much more about the process of animation and drawing in general. Also money helps too heheh.
Also a sidenote: doing the school assignments aren’t bad because I’m able to go through the process and find problems in my process I wouldn’t have thought of before. It’s just incredibly bland. But it’s good for exposing me to different processes I guess.
My usual goal/mindset is to “pass enough to get that degree” and spend time exploring the things I like. Which helps me practice more on the side.
