when Mara was little a plague called ‘burning fever’ went through the city she lived in. a lot of people who got it died but those who did live were left with burn like scars across their body

ok so Raelim is a mercenary and at one point he picked up a really bad job where he had to steal an old expensive necklace from a group of people. Mara happened to be in the same tavern when Raelim was making the deal with the guy hiring him, she overheard them and followed Raelim to where the necklace was. both of them end up getting caught and they agree to temporarily work together to escape.
