Your breath on me

He held him in his arms. He could feel his heartbeat, it was beating slower.. and slower… and slower…… His breath was feeling more faint. He tried to stop the bleeding but he knew it wasn’t going to do anything. The injury was too severe… It was already too late. He felt his friend’s trembling hand on his body as he held onto it.

“…Bubba…” tears rolled down his face, “I- I don’t want to die-.. I don’t want to die.. Bubba—….” a few sobs escaped his mouth as he tightly held onto the elephant. He could only look down at him with pity and guilt. He bit his tongue and slowly pulled his dying friend to a hug.

“… I’m… sorry…” he whispered to his ear in a shaky breath.

The chicken breathed on his shoulder faintly before slowly lifting his arms to hug him back.

As they embraced each other for the last time… He couldn’t feel his faint breath anymore. The warmth was gone, and his heart stopped beating.

Yet he still kept holding him… With small tears escaping his eyes…

“Uh… Bubba?”

Kickin came to Bubba for help with his minor injury. He expected to go through the usual, get scolded, slap a bandaid on it, get a get well kiss— actually that last one only happens in his dreams.

Anyways that’s what he expected, but he was caught off guard by Bubba going to a state of panic and making a mess out of his house just to find the first-aid kit which he’s supposed to already know where it should be.

When he did find it, he put too many layers of bandages on his injury and was asking so many questions about how he got it, who did it, and overall was having an insane overreaction over an injury from a bike accident.

“I didn’t think you’d care this much” he let out a small chuckle, but Bubba continued to stare at him with… an upset expression before he got closer to the chicken and suddenly pulled him to a hug, which caught Kickin by surprise.

“wh— What are you—?”

“Just—…”

Bubba held him tighter as he kept him close

“… just… keep breathing… keep talking to me……”

Kickin could feel his body trembling while he continued to hug him. He started to feel worried but he didn’t know what to do.

He lifted his arms and hugged the elephant back. “…If you say so… I’ll talk to you till the sun goes down. Just for you Bubs” he patted his back as Bubba kept him close.
