Kakucho Hitto x F! Reader

Word counts: 2,5k + MINORS DNI (NSFW)

Warnings/tags: Reader is a foreigner, husband Kakucho, smut, unprotected sex, breeding kink, smut to fluff

Notes: Special thanks to @poppyandhervillains who made me now simping hard for husband Kakucho. I need this man in my life. Barely proof-read, we die like real men here.

At My Worst

The low rumbles of the conversations around the table. The tinkling sound of crystal glasses crashing into each other. The laughs of the women at the end of the long table you sat on. None of these noises were able to distract you from the deep conversation you were having with the four men around you.

You are seating next to your husband. A heavy radiant shape diamond on your left finger is leaving no doubt on the expensive gifts you, and your man, can afford to buy for the other.

On your left Rindou Haitani listens to your explanation on how they could double the profits of Bonten. Ran, in front of him, is pouring himself a glass of the finest Chateau Margaux you chose earlier when ordering the wine. The men always trusted your taste for wine. They say it’s easier for foreign palates to taste the difference, and so far they were never disappointed with your advice. Both in wine and business. He takes a look at Mikey in the head seat of the table. The man looks bored but he approves your words while smiling at Kakucho on your right, and you feel him puts his hand on your thigh under the table.

To Kakucho you were the greatest thing that could ever happen to him. His attitude showed nothing but admiration and love for his precious wife. You are so perfect. Your h/c hair is attached in an elegant bun, a few strands of hair left free around your face. Your eyes, so pretty, that left him struck the first time you both met. And your lips… Delicious and plump lips, covered in that red lipstick he loves so much. How did you fall in love with him, he still wonders now, as if the rings around your fingers and the constant affection you shared with him weren't real.

How could he, with the scar covering his face and his blind eye, end up with an angel like you? Well… An angel? Maybe not really. The first time you two met you were in Mikey’s office, trading with him. Turns out the angel is in reality a pretty smart dealer. Oh no, you don’t do dirty, but when it comes to tax evasion, and turning the laws in your favor, you are world widely known.

You met a few more times until you two were left alone one evening. Mikey and the Haitani brothers were well aware of your mutual attraction. So maybe, they pushed a few buttons for you two, finally ending up together around a table, and in Kakucho’s bed the same night. Him holding you tight, and you, moaning his name like a prayer, kissing his face and his scar, tender words exchanged to the other.

You got married in less than a year, the danger rushing the relationship, but you were both so in love. So perfect for the other that it wasn’t even a surprise when you showed up at Bonten’s meeting last month with the custom 4 carat diamond on your hand, and Kakucho walking in the room with his hand on your lower back.

You both kept your relationship secret. Nobody has to know. None of you wanted to put your partner in more danger than you already had to face.

The dinner ended slowly and Mikey, Ran, and Rindou asked Kakucho for a private meeting. You knew what they were doing and talking about, but you just didn’t want to be a part of it. Kakucho looks at you and caresses your cheek “We’ll try not to make you wait for too long”. You smile back at him and reply “Don’t worry about me, I got my phone and that haiku book you bought me.” “Are you trying to read haiku?” “Well, it’s interesting to read to learn more about your language and what you like”, you joke.

With one last sign from Mikey’s head, the men leave the salon and head to the private office, leaving you with the women from the dinner earlier.

You have absolutely no idea about who they are. It’s the first time you see these six women, all wrapped in gaudy dresses and fake gold jewelry. Probably some hostesses, sent there by Bonten’s men to distract the higher-ups. As if the Haitani would look at them with their wives waiting for them at home, and you know Mikey has absolutely no interest in cheap women.

Their loud voices and laughs are coming your way as you try to focus on the verse of the haiku. They are so loud you are able to catch a few parts of their conversations.

“Haha isn’t it crazy that he had to take a foreign prostitute to that meeting?”

“Tell me about it, I heard from the boss that he was too ugly to get a woman, but to buy one from afar, the guy must be desperate!”

You raise your eyebrow. You were never into gossiping but to have a lingering ear could not hurt, especially if you catch something about a man causing problems within the gang.

“But fo’ real you seen his scar?” says a fake blond “man is disgusting with his white eye. I admire her, I would vomit if I had to kiss him”

“You saw that ring on her finger? Pffff haha how cheap is that? I found the same in Harajuku!”

It hits you suddenly! The vulgar women were not talking about some random person. They were making fun of you and your husband. Your blood is boiling, you’re not someone who loses their temper easily, but how dare these stupid bitches talk about Kakucho like that?

You’re about to rise from your seat when the door of the office opens again and the four men exit the room. Kakucho walks to your seat and leans down to kiss your forehead. You hear the women laugh again in the back, drawing the twins' eyes on them. You turn your eyes and avoid Kakucho’s gaze to take his hand. It makes him cock an eyebrow up and he turns to the women, finally understanding what's happening when one of the women pretends to gag when he took your hand in his.

Kakucho lets go of your hand and walks to the six hostesses who all jump in surprise. Your husband is way taller than them, and his natural authority gives him a presence that makes anyone shut their mouth when he gets close.

“Ladies,” he says “I saw that you had a nice evening, leaving the notes for us to pay. You were quite noisy at the table. Can I know where you work?”

“They’re from club Queens in Shibuya,” says Rindou in the back.

“Queen eh?...” the fake blond nods “Well, it seems that you, dumb bitches, offended all of us five a little too much tonight.” “You five?” gasps the one who pretended to gag “But Arashi told us you were only four!”

Ran laughs a little and Mikey cuts the woman “Hitto-san over there is our business associate. She’s our greatest dealer and it seems that you really bothered her with your noise earlier.”

Kakucho gives them a look before moving back to where you're staying. “See ladies… You can insult me all you want, but you shouldn’t insult my wife.”

You stand next to him, so elegant in your black dress, an arm over his own.

“I’ll make sure you all won’t be able to work again. Ever” says Mikey before the doors open and a few men grab the women to throw them outside.

You thank all of them with a nod of your head and you leave the room with Kakucho. Your husband guides you to his Bentley and opens the passenger's door for you.

You sit next to him and sigh as he turns on the engine and drives you home. None of you say anything during the ride home. You felt so sad about the whole incident. You knew very well that being a foreigner would mean being the target of gossip but Kakucho didn’t deserve that.

Kakucho on his hand keeps replaying the scene in his head: how you lowered your gazes when you heard the women talking about you both. The insults threw his way about his face. His scar. His blind eye. And it hits him that maybe he wasn’t worthy of you.

Kakucho parks the car to your Meguro house and you both enter the place, both of you still silent about the incident. He gently touches your back and you turn to him with a sad smile on your face. “I’ll go to the bathroom to get ready for bed.” you mumble

You climb the stairs and enter the bathroom, and you let the tears fall silently on your face. You didn’t notice that your husband is leaning on the door frame, watching you.

“Is it that terrible?” he asks and you quickly raise your face to look at his eyes in the mirror. “What… what are you talking about?” He walks and stands behind you. His gaze never leaving yours. “My face,” he says.

You want to turn to face him, but his arms are on the sink, imprisoning you in his embrace.

“How can you say that?” you wipe your tears “Kakucho how can you even think that I would think like them? Your face is beautiful, your scar is beautiful, your eyes are beautiful… It’s the proof that you are alive. That you’re here with me…” you grab his left hand and kiss the ring on his finger. “Kakucho… I love you… I love you so much that I wanted to kill these hoes for insulting us!”

He lightly chuckles and wraps his right hand around your middle and kisses your neck. Your breath hitches and you feel a sudden warmth going through your veins. Your husband has this effect on you.

“I love you Y/N” he kisses you again “Fuck… you are so perfect… so freaking perfect”. His left hand leaves yours to lay on your thigh, going through the slit of your dress, touching the skin underneath. The cold gold of the Patek Philippe around his wrist sends shivers to your spine, making you arch your back and hit his chest.

His right thumb brushes your lips, his eyes staring into yours as your part your lips to gently flick on his fingertip with your tongue.

You can feel his cock poking your ass. He is obsessed with the vision of you sucking on his thumb as you’d do for his cock. Kakucho finally removes his thumb for your lips, and leans closer, eyes closed. He starts kissing the back of your neck, biting on the tender skin of your shoulder. He keeps marking your delicate skin and you can hear him purrs in your ear “Mine… you’re fucking mine…” You moan his name softly, knowing you’ll have to go to the meeting tomorrow with his marks on your neck, bruises visible for everyone to see.

His hand spreads your legs and dives under the waistband of your beautiful lace thong, his digits rubbing soft circles on your clit.

Your breath accelerates as you grasp his wrist. You can hear him chuckles in your neck. You buck your hips on his already hard cock to let him know how much you want him and he pushes your lingerie down your legs.

“Spread for me baby”

He pulls back a little, to observe you, with your dress up on your hips, panting hard, your wet cunt dripping down your thighs.

“So fucking perfect for me.”

Your lewd expression and your clouded eyes are enough to send him high already, but Kakucho wants more.

You can hear the sound of his belt unbuckling as he opens his pants, his hand wearing his wedding rings never leaving your hip.

“Tell me baby… who does that pussy belongs to?” his lips ghost your ear and you feel him between your thighs, his cock taping on your clit to tease you. “You Kakucho… it’s you… I am yours...Uhm…”

“Should I make you round with my child for them to know that you’re mine?” His left hand touches your lower stomach lightly. “Kakucho” you murmur, your eyes searching for his in the mirror. “Is that what you want?” he asks. You blush and you nod your head. “Good girl” he breathes and he finally inserts himself in your tight cunt. Both hips collide as he thrusts inside you. You feel so full that you’re having a hard time breathing.

He delivers more kisses to your neck as he starts moving into your cunt, his pace increasing with each thrust. Your walls squeeze him and your lewd mewls make his thick length pulsates inside you.

His palm softly caresses to your hips and you inwardly arch your back even further, feeling his tip hitting your cervix with every move.

You whimper his name and you hear him whispers behind you, but you are already too dumb on his cock to reply even if you wanted to. “I love you so much… fuck y/n… Your pussy always takes me so well…So good for me”

His hips keep crashing against yours, with his tip hitting your favorite spots, leaving you breathless. Your hands are barely able to hold you over the sink.

He leans into you, fucking himself inside you over and over and you feel your walls tightening on your husband’s dick.

Kakucho is panting on your neck, the sound of your arousal and his balls slapping against you filling the room.

You feel yourself coming closer and closer, your walls holding him so tight, and with one more thrust of your husband, you are sent over the edge. You become a moaning mess as you cum on his dick.

“Kakucho…” you moan desperately “Fuck baby you milk me so good… I’m gonna cum inside you.. Fill you with my seed…. Gonna give you my baby...” The sight of you, drunk on his cock, and the ring of your cum around his cock makes him cum inside you with a loud growl, painting your walls wite.

Pulling out, his cum drips down on the marble floor of your bathroom, and Kakucho turns you around, bringing your arms around his neck to kiss you gently.

You kiss him back, and you can feel your legs tremble under you. Your husband notices it and pulls you in another loving embrace, your red cheek pressed against his -now- crumpled Tom Ford shirt. “I love you” he affirms as his hand gently holds your head against him.

You nod your head against his chest and mumble a soft “I love you too Kakucho… Don’t let anyone ever make you doubt that”

He puts you back on your feet and he helps you remove your designer dress.

“Let’s get you cleaned up before we go to bed” he smiles at you.

“Can we have a round two?” You innocently smile at him, and he grins at you. “As many as you want, baby.”

AAKXHAK With how my lil brother left for the vacation early I lowkey felt a little weird not having him around the house so that slowed down my writing because I stress for no reason.

But to get over it I just wrote this as it was on my mind for a while. I love seeing relationships from someone else's POV, especially if that someone sees what's wrong about it... And they're not important- also since this was forced out of me during a writers blog its very slow paced and badly written so bear with me TT

I just needed to do SOMETHING so this may be weird cuz it doesn't necessarily focus on you and Mikey until we reach the end :')

Akio Shinsato [Random name don't worry] didn't know that starting off as a high positioned person in a huge criminal organization would be so utterly confusing and appalling.

The man in his late-twenties had an extraordinary feature to adapt to violent crimes in seconds so it was no surprise he ended up working for the highest criminal organization in Japan yet; Bonten.

And Bonten... Was not it.

First off he read on the rules and what not when he was put to work under Bonten's number 2, Sanzu Haruchiyo.

His boss was... Simply to put; crazy and unhinged. But Sanzu's most recognizable trait had to be his undeniable loyalty to Bonten's leader, Manjiro Sano, or better known as Mikey. A trait that could almost be called "admirable", but Akihiko would prefer it be called "obsession" as it was more fitting. Sanzu didn't have the "Loyal Mad Dog" nickname by just admiring Mikey like a normal crazy criminal, he had to take it a step further.

And said crazy lunatic held all of his underlings to a very high standard as well, expecting them all to hold the same loyalty to Bonten- to Mikey as Sanzu did, anyone who didn't meet those expectations would for sure be at the end of the dog's wrath and katana.

So worship Mikey, no slacking and listen to Sanzu; easy enough right? Wrong.

What Bonten enthusiasts and stalkers failed to mention to Akio were the unspoken rules of working so closely with the organization's executives. Especially if you're in a high enough position to sometimes catch a glimpse of the their personal lives, which he was.

It began with Rule 1: Mikey, the invincible Mikey, leader of Bonten, had a lover.

Now it should come as no surprise to anyone since Mikey is powerful enough to have anyone he wants hang off his arm with just one word.

But for some reason Akio was rather shocked when he overheard a few guards talking about it during lunch.

"They came to visit personally today?" Akio stood still at attention when the words of his coworkers reached his ears, chopsticks stopping right before reaching his mouth, only listening in since he recognized the two as the men on guard duty for today. Two assigned men guarded outside the room and two inside whenever a meeting took place. Of course if it was in Bonten's area, if not there would be a lot more quantity in numbers.

They made sure to stand still whenever Mikey had to discuss offers and trades with figures that Akio knew better than to look on the eye, yet if any suspicious activity coming from the "guests" was spotted Sanzu would execute them on the spot. That's how little they mattered to someone like Mikey.

'Who are they talking about?' Akio wondered, opening his mouth to start chewing down the meat he was eating. He knew that they knew that Sanzu would cut them up into pieces if he found out they didn't follow his orders to stand still for the entire day and evening, so who could possibly have the gall and audacity to walk and stand in front of the meeting room when they could be working.

"Yup, it seems the big boss finally let them wander out of the house." Akio's co-worker hummed, chewing on the luxury food that Bonten provided for the high ranking employees "After the kidnapping attempt that was made a month ago I thought Mikey would lock them up for a year, he was super adamant of not letting them go out at all..." The other one sighed, his voice quiet as a whisper where Akio barely heard it. Almost as if calling Bonten's leader by his name was a sin punishable by death... Well it was, Sanzu would drag them to hell personally.

"Must be tough being his lover, they even had a collar around their neck, looked like a tracking device too." By that Akio nearly choked on his next bite of food, swiftly placing down his chopsticks to grab the glass of water and chug it down, washing down the food from his throat. Mikey's lover? Did their leader even have the capacity to feel such emotions? Could he even feel lust let alone love? Mikey looked like he never wanted anything, so detached from the world.

Akio has only stolen glances at Mikey before, the possibility of Sanzu most definitely plucking Akio's eyes out with his own fingers for exhibition such blasphemy towards the king by staring scared Akio enough, making a few glances seem more than enough.

The man wore dark baggy clothes, his dark pools of nothingness all but stared into your soul and the white hair gave Mikey a ghostly presence. His apperance would pop up in your mind if you thought of a sleep paralysis demon not a criminal leader. That demon loved someone? Or cared enough to make them his lover?

'For pleasure maybe...' Akio was a man of logic, obviously he'd come to that conclusion when calculating -trying to at least- Mikey's character, maybe Mikey preferred you so much he saved you from a kidnapping attempt, then again that could be because he didn't want you to tell information to the enemy. Yeah it's definitely the latter.

Still, was the lover that daring as if to desperately wait for Mikey while looking like a pet with that collar? It seems so.

Akio was rather curious to see Mikey's lover in the flesh. Every other executive had a lover that was let go of within a month or two because they'd grow bored, you must be the same right?

Apperantly no.

Then came Rule 2: You being free to walk around whenever you want.

Akio was informed about girls and prostitutes being called over to the headquarters every now and then, but they only ever went to the Haitani's and Kokonoi's offices as those three were in charge of such business.

So when Akio saw you, modestly dressed with clothes and accessories from expensive brands that would definitely make a dent in his pockets despite him being a high ranking guard in Bonten, he knew you were Mikey's lover.

If not for that it was for the collar that hugged around your neck, it looked really pretty and Akio would've taken it as a fashion choice if it wasn't for the letter "M" hanging from the collar in a small chain, dangling as you walked around the place with no trouble, seemingly like it was a daily routine to take a walk through Bonten's headquarters.

"Do you have any business here?" As soon as he saw you approach closer to the meeting room Akio had to stop you and stand in front of you, his eyes scanning you from head to toe in what seemed boredom and light suspicion, mostly at what enticed the Bonten leader to keep you around and not why you were here.

You looked back at him in surprise, probably not familiar with this sudden treatment.

A look of realization crossed your face when you realized he might be a new recruit, a small polite smile pulled up your lips much to his surprise as you nodded "I came here to see Mikey." Even carelessly saying his name in Bonten's headquarters- Akio couldn't help but to visibly cringe, imagining what Sanzu would do to you if he heard a mere lover say the king's name so lightly.

Speak of the devil.

Akio's eyes narrowed at you, an action that when paired with the harshness of his expression clearly caused your shoulders to tense up and your light expression to fall into awkwardness, he almost scoffed in sarcasm at your soft demeanor despite being inside the headquarters of Bonten, you'd be eaten alive "For that you must make a-..." Yet he held his tongue once hearing familiar, harsh footsteps swiftly approaching towards the two of you, the threatening growl escaping from his boss' throat caused Akio to shudder in fear when it reached his ears, and despite not being able to meet his boss' eyes the daggers in form of a glare burned holes at the back of his head to the point he got goosebumps.

Akio considered himself lucky when all that happened was Sanzu's hand tightly grasping a fistful of hair from the back of Akio's head and painfully pushed him down into a bow in front of you-

Wait a bow? Wasn't that a respectful gesture? Akio expected a harsh punch to his face because he was slacking to talk to you instead of working but instead Sanzu made him bow?

"You worthless piece of shit, do you not have any manners huh!? HOW FUCKING DARE YOU SPEAK AND LOOK AT THEM SO CASUALLY!?" Sanzu's exasperated voice might as well have sounded out throughout the entire building- it wasn't strange for the pink haired male to make a bloody example over whatever poor soul had made a small mistake in his presence, even if it was his own men- ESPECIALLY if it was his own men.

Sanzu doesn't kill them but he does leave them bloody on the floor, even giving them extra shifts after that beating with no breaks.

'I just started two weeks ago too...' Akio bit his tongue to not let his voice slip past his lips, fully bowing respectfully to you like one would to a superior and once realizing that Sanzu let go of Akio's hair, still Akio kept his body tense as a harsh smack on his head was delivered shortly after "Stay like that." Sanzu barked out an order and Akio followed, choosing life. He kept his eyes to the floor but his ears were attentive to the words you and Sanzu spoke, curiosity getting the better of him.

"I apologise about his rude behavior [Y/N], he's still inexperienced." Akio blinked at Sanzu's switch to the unusual laid back and somewhat polite tone, speaking to you as if you were a familiar person or friend. He needed to process why his psychotic boss was speaking to you in a way he'd only speak to the executive when in a very, VERY good mood.

'Their name is [Y/N]...' Akio made the mistake of lifting his gaze to glance up at you only for Sanzu to catch him and smack his head again, another warning for the male to keep looking down "I'll be sure to punish him thoroughly and teach him a lesson." And Sanzu's threatening hiss made it clear to Akio that he'd be missing more than just a few teeth and fingers after tonight, the heated glare from Sanzu was burning holes at this point.

But then he heard you step closer to them "No! There's no need for that Sanzu, he didn't do anything wrong." It was rather... Unfamiliar for anyone to go against Sanzu when Sanzu wanted to punish someone, even the other executives were met with a fight by him, so because of that, and despite his best efforts to not do it, Akio carefully glanced at Sanzu to see reaction in curiosity and anticipation but instead seeing a rare emotionless expression on his boss 'Why are they defending me?' Akio then looked back down once catching a glimpse of your harmless smile, guilt settling itself in Akio's chest uncomfortably "I was just asking when the meeting was about to end, Mikey and I are supposed to go to dinner soon."

Now you lied for him? Sanzu hated lies.

The guilt only grew further, his hands tightening into fists as if to hold himself back from saying anything, Akio was getting defended by you when you were at greater danger for God's sake. At least he was still a high ranking person, you were just Mikey's lover who Sanzu might deem unworthy-

"Kind as ever... It's a pain in the ass, you know that right [Y/N]?" But then Akio heard Sanzu only give a hopeless sigh and playfully take a jab at you in response after a silent moment of thinking. There was no way Sanzu out of all people would believe that...

"If you want to go see the king just enter the meeting room, I'm sure he'll be thrilled to see you." Sanzu's tone quickly chirped up gleefully in a way Akio had yet to process, it was confusing... Revolting even... "It's all thanks to you he's starting to eat again, Mikey was so stressed when you were grabbed and nearly thrown into the car like that." Was that... Pity???

He heard you respond in an apologetic tone "I... Should've been more careful, I'm sorry. I caused Mikey and the rest of you a lot of panic..." Akio didn't know the details, but he was sure it wasn't your fault. You seemed to be inexperienced in whatever business Bonten was in. At first Akio had assumed you might have been one of Haitani's or Kokonoi's club girls- or an assassin Mikey found somewhat entertaining, but you were the opposite; belonging into a happier and more normal life- so why were you here with Mikey?

Akio couldn't help the numbness that spread through him at the thought that you were forced against your will despite not having a dept or money to pay up to, Mikey picked you up from somewhere simply because he could. And you had to accept it.

"Oh, it wasn't your fault [Y/N]~" Akio's eyes widened in surprise at the sentence, his tense body relaxing but he knew he got goosebumps at this new side of his boss, sure maybe Mikey could, but why was Sanzu so uncharacteristically nice to you too? "The world is better off without those scraps anyways, and they were the lowest of the low considering they dared touch you." The sadistic undertone in Sanzu's voice was as clear as day, followed by a delightful giggle and finally allowed Akio to stand back up straight "Come on, I'll escort you into the meeting."

Akio glanced at his boss, the scarred lips that were usually in a scowl being pulled up into a grin- a softer grin than the one he cackled with when an execution happened. Sanzu then stepped to your side and tapped your back to make you start walking "Thank you, Sanzu." You gave Sanzu an appreciative smile and Akio was sure Sanzu's soft grin turned into a proud, cocky smirk because of it, then you glanced at Akio himself, the man flinched from the sight of your [E/C] eyes on him, somewhat still lively in gentleness and sanity that pulled at protective instincts Akio didn't know he had "Sorry for the trouble." A shy yet kind smile was shown to him as you passed by him to get to the meeting room, one that Akio had been sure he had left behind way long ago yet here it was...

Sanzu passed by him as well but his boss tilted his head to look back at Akio, previous mischievous eyes narrowing into an irritated glare once he caught sight of Akio "Now scram and go do something useful. I better not see your ass slacking like a fucking imbecile."

Akio hoped to never meet you again as that was one of the most stressful situations he's been into and it's just his second week on the job! But also because of the simple fact he detested your presence inside of Bonten, you didn't belong here- too clean to be in Mikey's clutches and be owned by him like the rest of Bonten was. And the way his mind was stuck on how Sanzu looked at you as he escorted you away, clearly protective but there was something... More that Akio couldn't make out- not that he wanted to! It wasn't his business anyway.

At least now he knows to just let you pass through the halls and rooms as you pleased.

Then he was presented with Rule 3: Witnessing just how much Mikey loved you.

Luckily for Akio he hadn't lost limbs nor was he demoted after that encounter, Sanzu looked like... He forgot about it... And Akio was always on edge because of it, even unable to sleep at the growing possibility that his boss would remember and suddenly backstab him with that katana of his.

'I wish, at least that would be less painful.' Akio thought to himself helplessly, despite that he still kept the nonchalant expression on his face, standing guard with someone else inside the meeting room his third week. A small meeting being held between the executives; Kokonoi, the younger Haitani, Mochizuki and Mikey. Kakucho for some reason left in the middle of the meeting, he got a text and once he showed it to Mikey he was granted permission to leave.

Akio finally got the chance to get a good look at Mikey without Sanzu breathing down his neck and he found out all his assumptions were somewhat correct. The leader barely spoke, only if necessary or found the need to make sharp and merciless orders with an uncaring tone, hearing everyone's opinion before he made a decision but Akio also assumed Mikey might have been too bored to talk so he picked the opinion that was the most similar to his own. The white haired male also kept looking at his phone in irritation every few minutes, Akio had to wonder just what made him that fixated on it. It had been souring Mikey's mood the second Kakucho left.

His question was answered by Kakucho arriving soon after, except this time someone else was with him.

Akio's eyes glanced to the double doors once they began to crack open, only to still and widen his eyes once he saw you, Kakucho himself holding one of the doors open for you instead of the guards.

"Here you go, please be careful." The usual stern executive spoke in a softer voice, his face had relaxed as the mismatched eyes gazed upon you with unusual tenderness, indicating this wasn't as much of a job as it was something he wanted to do.

"Thank you, Kakucho. Sorry I put you through the trouble." Akio quickly glanced away once your voice snapped him out of his surprised state, silently taking a deep breath through his nose to calm himself down from remembering the intense and complicated emotions he had about you "It was nothing, don't worry about it." So he kept his eyes straight to his superiors, only being more shocked once he processed Mikey's reaction at your presence.

A pleasant small smile easily stretched up Mikey's lips, so easily to the point it dismissed the fact Mikey kept on a dead nonchalant expression on his face the entire time. His half lidded eyes almost had an unnatural lively glow to them as he stared at you, cheeks tinting up to a soft pink that understandably stood out through the pale white skin.

Mikey's body relaxed on the chair and he spoke "I'm glad you came to see me again my angel~ did you have a pleasant ride with Kakucho?" The leader's voice was such a gentle tone as he cooed at you, raising one of his hands and motioned for you to come closer.

Akio stared in astonishment, confusion and... Dread. The man's hands that were locked behind his back began twitching and sweating once he saw you walk closer to Mikey.

The executives began greeting you with smiles and grins as you passed by them to get to Mikey, the mood of the room changing while you said your cheerful hellos to the top executives in Bonten before finally standing next to Mikey.

But Akio wasn't processing that, the man just stared and took in Mikey's change. The closer you approached the worst Mikey's expression got. His smile turned into a grin once you gently cupped his face with one hand, eyes swirling with a desperate darkness when you smiled down at him "Mhm!" You answered with a giggle and leaned down to give Mikey a small peck on the lips, only for Mikey to suddenly grab your face with both his hands and tug you closer again for another kiss, then another, each kiss lasting longer than the next.

One of Mikey's hands trailing behind your head and keeping you still, Akio's breath got caught up in his throat when he noticed Mikey's tongue invite itself in your mouth, unlike your closed eyes that were shut tight his leader's were still slightly open, staring at you, like Mikey didn't dare to stop looking at you 'Are they seriously making out right now?' The guard couldn't look away because of shock but why was everyone acting like this is normal?

-Thankfully for him- You quickly took action, placing your hands on Mikey's shoulder and physically pushed yourself away from Mikey to slip through his hold. Akio silently sighed in relief once the muffled kissing sounds stopped but then he broke out into cold sweat at the sudden loss of emotion in the leader's face within a second, eyes small and shaking, clenched jaw and lips slightly parted to bare his teeth.

'Fuck, he's going to kill them...' Akio pursed his lips and tried to remind himself to breath, the temperature having dropped to subzero by Mikey's crazed expression simply because you pulled away.

Mikey tilted his head to look at you and Akio believed this would be your end, but once Mikey saw your bashful red expression, your eyes staring at the floor instead as you lightly gripped your own arm in embarrassment, it seemed he understood why you pulled away; from being flustered rather than not wanting his kisses.

So just like that Mikey went back to showing a small smile on his face.

'Did he really not think they pulled away because they were embarrassed...?' Akio pitied your position, breathing properly again as the rapid beating in his heart slowed down. Finding it over the top even for Mikey to react in such a way because you apperantly didn't want to kiss him... Did you really have such a strong grasp at his emotions? Akio sighed, he found it silly... And dangerous.

"What's wrong angel, did you get embarrassed?" Mikey giggled in mock innocence, playfully teasing you as he reached out to hold your hand instead "Yeah... A-a little." The male chuckled at your answer, seemingly finding your reasoning adorable as he gently began rubbing his thumb on your palm.

Akio began scanning the other executives, they were acting like this was a normal tuesday and it wasn't creeping them out at all, the younger Haitani was on his phone probably playing a game to pass the time, Kokonoi kept checking the papers, Kakucho had sat down next to Mochizuki and joined him on munching on the food on the table. It looked like they were on a small, comfortable break rather than discussing the gun deal with one of their partners. Even his coworker visibly relaxed a little!

Why was HE the only one feeling goosebumps when Mikey brought your hand to his lips and gave it a tender kiss "How cute~" Mikey chuckled and then patted his lap, Akio noticed how with that simple action you immediately knew what to do by placing your bag on the table, careful not to have it cover any of the papers "Come on, sit down, I still have a little bit of work to do but I can make some time for you angel." And with the order given you swiftly sat down on his lap, Mikey smiling in delight at how quickly you reacted, wrapping his arms around you and laying his head right on the crook of your neck, next to your collar.

Just when Akio thought the meeting will continue normally Mikey tilted his head towards your neck and began giving you gentle and soft kisses. The small smile on Mikey's face would've been cute if Akio didn't know how the male has killed hundreds with his bare hands.

A gulp was swallowed unconsciously, brows knitting in confusion as he observed how Mikey's cheeks went aflame into a bright red when you lifted your hand up to pat his head instead of pushing him away. Akio knew Mikey wasn't a stable person, hearing many stories of how the leader usually had tantrums or fits of violence, even attempting to hurt himself before but the unstable expression on Mikey's face right now wasn't loving or adoration.

It looked like straight up desperation and need of wanting to pounce on you and take you right then and there. Obsessive to the point Akio witnessed Mikey's teeth graze your neck, wanting to bite and do more than just kisses but stopping each time.

"Did you have a nice sleep? I had to come to work early so I couldn't check on you properly this morning." Mikey hummed softly, hoping to distract himself with talking so he wouldn't latch his mouth onto your neck, one hand grasping tightly at your waist and the other lifting up to pat your head "I'm just upset you couldn't make it to breakfast and lunch, make it up to me by having dinner together okay?" Your lips pulled into a small pout as you all but demanded of the leader, sure Akio could consider it a cute demand mixed in with the worry about his health but would Mikey let it slide...? "Alright we'll eat dinner together so please don't be upset~ you're so sweet to worry about me~" Yes, yes he would.

Dear lord watching Bonten's top act like this was tiring, simply by the fact how easily you could make Mikey switch emotions, and one wrong move could have them all killed.

Akio was willing to bet Mikey had talked more to you than what he's said in the 2 hour meeting before you arrived. The male wasn't sure if Mikey even listened once Koko proceeded with the meeting, the leader just kept nuzzling to you and sometimes whispering words nobody could hear in your ear, but they got you really flustered so it was easy to assume the words that he had said.

The predatory glint in Mikey's eyes as you blushed and turned away pouting wasn't missed by anyone, and while they all knew better than to talk Akio couldn't help but to feel guilty as he observed your embarrassment starting to turn into displeasure. Bitting your lower lip and kept staring down at your lap instead once the overwhelming affection and being used like a cuddle toy for stress relief starting to get to you.

Akio didn't take Mikey as an observant person because the other didn't seem to give a fuck about his surroundings unless he was fighting but he was proven wrong when Mikey seemed so sensitive to your mood changes, seeing your current expression he must've assumed you were growing bored of the meeting or upset at all the violence that was thrown around for you to listen to.

"Do I have anything scheduled for dinner tonight?" Mikey asked Kokonoi, this time around he had given his answers and orders faster, not listening to anyone's opinion and instead deciding to explain the plans himself right as the questions and options were given to him- is that why Sanzu encouraged you to just go into meetings? Because Mikey not only worked faster but better as long as he had you there?

Akio now wondered what was up with Kokonoi. The male checked the schedule and visibly turned annoyed and irritated after reading it "Yes, we agreed to go to dinner wi-"

"Cancel it."

"Yes boss."

And he was more than happy to cancel it.

'... Just like that?' Akio's mouth was slightly agape in hopelessness, Mikey canceled an important dinner just so he can have one with you instead... And none of those others tried swaying him away from his decision.

Maybe they knew better than to do so, not with Mikey's enamored gaze locked on you as he gently patted your hair and mumbled options of where you'd want to go eat. Manjiro Sano simply couldn't keep his hands off you.

In came Rule 4: You weren't immune to Mikey's bad mood, you actually took the fall to make him feel better instead.

Akio thought it was a sick twisted joke by fate. The reason why he suddenly became your guard and even drove you to places was never explained to him, Sanzu just dropped that bombshell on him randomly and told him to deal with it.

"If you get too close to them I'll kill you." Sanzu threatened him with an annoyed glare, and despite Akio nodding firmly, understanding his boss' words Sanzu just got even more agitated as he explained your schedule and what Akio would do. For some reason the look Sanzu was sending him had Akio considering that this was either a trap or a test. Most likely a trap. Even his co workers were asking if his funeral would be a closed casket one because one mistake and Sanzu- now Mikey too would leave him unrecognizable.

"Taking care of [Y/N] is an honor bestowed upon you, so don't take it lightly. I assume you know what will happen if you don't properly take care of the king's angel."

'Mikey himself will do the honor of making me experience hell.' Akio finished in his thoughts as he glared at the ground from the unfair situation. Holding the car's back door open for you and Mikey to enter. His eyes lingered a little too long on your trembling form, Akio didn't want to know what happened but Mikey must've been in a bad mood to take you with him to the slaughterhouse, and by how you spend hours in there Akio presumed it wasn't just a light kill but full on torture. 'Blood...' His eyes scanned the small splatters of red dots on your clothes, did Mikey force you to watch closely or forced you to do anything?

You didn't look well, your face was pale and he caught tears bubbling up and hazing your eyes as you entered the car first. Akio's previous hard expression softened as he couldn't help but to stare in pity, wondering if he should suggest to Mikey to take you to the hospital instead-

"What are you doing?"

Akio flinched once Mikey's low voice demanded of him, interrupting his thoughts. He forgot how to breath when the dread crept up his spine from the temperature that suddenly dropped several degrees all because Mikey suddenly had his sight on Akio.

Slowly, Akio dared to shift his eyes towards his leader that was now facing him, still unable to utter a word once making contact with the terrifying eyes, possessiveness swirling in the dark abyss. Mikey stepped closer to him with only the car door separating the two, beginning to raise his hand up to Akio's face slowly. Mikey's brows knitted together in frustration, eyes widening and his pupils shrunk, shaking in what Akio assumed to be hatred as he was glared at.

"You... Just where are you looking at with those disgusting eyes? Only I can look at [Y/N] like that."

Akio could hear his own heart rapidly beating in his ears as a warning to run, breaking off into a cold sweat when Mikey's hand was inches away, the fingers starting to block Akio's vision and despite all his senses screaming at him to move- to do something, Akio stood still at the small glimpse of Mikey's eyes still glaring at him.

"Mikey." But again, like the savior you were to Akio, you quickly interrupted that, hastily reaching from inside of the car to grasp at your lover's sleeve and tug to get his attention.

And Mikey, as always prioritizing you first, stopped, retracting his hand. The white haired male was still keeping his now nonchalant gaze directed at Akio, almost as if to test if Akio would dare look back at you for help. But when he didn't Mikey finally tore his eyes from him to look at you instead.

Akio had to force himself to breathe again, gulping down the lump in his throat after the demon looked away from him. Yet he couldn't help but to clench his jaw at seeing Mikey give you such a cold look, almost as if waiting for you to do more than just say his name- EXPECTING you to know what to do to calm his bad mood 'You always say you love them so much but this...' Akio believed even the worst of individuals can fall in love deeply, cliche sure yet it was a sweet thought especially with how even a few men in his group have happy families despite their business, but what Mikey felt towards you wasn't love. It was a a sickly twisted version of it, corrupted obsession at best.

"Can we go home? Please... I just want to go home..." Your pitiful whimpers and pleases squeezed at Akio's heart in pain, yet all he could do was hang his head low to stare at the ground and steal glances at Mikey instead, this clearly wasn't a balanced relationship, especially when you followed your words up with an actual cry "M-manjiro please... I want to go home... I wanna be alone with you..."

Mikey's unmoving expression finally cracked; not to reveal one of regret or sadness, no. Akio could only comprehend it as delight when Mikey showed a small smile at your tears "Was it that scary angel?~" Mikey completely forgot about him, opting to rather lean down and cup your face as he gently cooed.

The overjoyed giggle that slipped past Mikey's lips when you nodded made Akio shudder "How about I comfort you? Would you like that?~ And you can help me too as I was having a bad day." Mikey's tone noticeably darkened as he kissed at your wet cheeks, voice going into a low whisper rather than words and Mikey clearly shifted his eyes to make eye contact with Akio as he finished his words "Y-yes..." Was your only answer.

Akio remained quiet as always, unmoving, returning his sight to the ground below "Oi." Until Mikey called on him, voice ice cold again but he didn't lift his gaze up to the other, only listening "Drive us back to the penthouse. And drive slowy." Akio quickly nodded and once Mikey finally entered the car Akio closed the door for him. Walking back to the driver's side and opening the door to get inside 'Why... Why am I the only one here...?' Such a question flew past him. Shouldn't there be more guards? Why was he the only one on duty?

Akio didn't understand why Mikey told him to drive slowly- until he did. And Akio hated it. His thoughts were a mess after Mikey had nearly plucked his eyes out simply for staring at you and all Akio wanted was to just drop you off so he could go back to the comfort of his room, only for the soft kissing sounds to bring him back to reality, his senses sharp and aware- then it clicked to Akio what Mikey wanted to do. The sloppy kisses turned into whimpers and whines, then moans- and of course this was part of his job apperantly! Make sure Mikey is left satisfied but this...

Akio gripped the wheel of the car tightly, hands shaking and knuckles turning white, eyes wide and barely focusing on the road. He had half a mind to stop the car or crash it, but he knew he'd die uselessly on the first one and he didn't want to test the possibility that he might harm you if he followed the second option.

Vomit quickly formed at the back of his throat when he heard smacking sound out from the backseats- then followed by an actual slap, he didn't even have to wonder who slapped who as he recognized your yelp in surprise, probably from the stinging pain now blooming on your cheek. Nevertheless Akio just clenched his jaw and gulped it back down in disgust.

Akio also listened to Mikey's demanding orders and degrading words, and he bit the inside of his cheek when Akio himself was mentioned in Mikey's hiss of insults. Akio knew tears were threatening to spill off him when his vision blurred, just as Mikey wanted the ride was slow and steady.

Once he arrived at Mikey's penthouse where you also resided, Akio exited the car and immediately brought a hand up to rub at his eyes, letting out a shaky and unstable sigh as the memories replayed in his head against Akio's will. Traffic made everything hell, once Akio finally believed he had composed himself enough he opened the backseat door for you and Mikey to step out. The spare and small glance Akio stole at Mikey, who stepped out first, gave him insight of the somewhat messy hair and light flush on his face, meanwhile Akio didn't even dare look at you to see your state as Mikey offered a hand to help you get out of the car.

"You can lean on me angel, you know that right?" Mikey's demeanor had softened from his previous bad mood that much was clear, his voice had toned down into a tender whisper as he spoke to you and Akio was sure Mikey was petting you without even having to look "... Take the car to get cleaned then you can leave." Another thing Akio was sure of was that the strict order was for him, so without any resistance he nodded and got back inside the car, once the car door slammed shut the wet tears finally dripped down his cheeks in frustration and guilt.

'They don't deserve that... They don't.'

It was a plea in his mind and a choked out sob audibly, Akio hoped the car wasn't bugged.

Suddenly Akio really hated this job he once prided himself with. He didn't know why he cared about you because usually this wouldn't matter to him but he did care, and seeing you in these situations made him feel sick. His once composed and calculating attitude broke down when he thought of you suffering despite having no faults nor any business with Bonten.

He was unable to move once the comfort of being alone hit him, his head leaned down until it bumped to the wheel in desperation and self-loathing 'Fuck... What should I do...?' Akio considered himself pathetic for just crying about the problem while you suffered through it, but it was especially hard considering who he'd be up against- fucking Manjiro Sano that's who.

And the final rule, Rule 5: Is that it wasn't JUST Mikey. That was the worst part in this whole nightmarish ordeal.

"Hey... Are you..." Akio finally spoke, eyes on the road and hands tightly holding the wheel, he was ordered to pick you up to take you to the restaurant you were going to dine at with not only Mikey but the rest of the executives as well. Akio stole a quick glance at you and noticed your surprised expression, simply at the fact he was talking to you "Are you okay?" The words stuck at the tip of his tongue were finally asked and Akio's heart stood at ease for some reason, finally being able to freely speak to you, a few weeks having passed after that slaughterhouse incident.

"Huh...? I... Yes, I'm alright." Your surprised tone quickly shifted, voice light and reassuring yet it had the opposite effect on him "Are you sure...?" Again Akio asked, unable to shake off the anxiety growing inside of him the closer you reached to the restaurant "... Yup! Thank you for your concern sir." You again replied, voice more cheerful than before.

But Akio wasn't the usual person you deal with at the stores or restaurants where Mikey took you to have fun in, he could recognize the slight pause before you start talking, the shaky undertone, it seemed like practiced lines to him. Not to mention how you weren't even allowed to use his name.

"You're not."

Akio breathed out unconsciously, slowing down the car to a stop once it reached a red light. Akio couldn't help but look back at you in pain, his breathing quiet yet he was having a hard time to keep it even "You're... Not okay. It's not okay..." Your expression quickly cracked from the usual polite smile you displayed in public, eyes wide once you understood what he meant and you quickly looked down to your lap, trying not to break down because of such a simple question and statement. Eyes into tight, shaking fists "I-I have no idea what you mean... Please just... Just drive to the restaurant..."

Not that Akio blamed you for such a reaction, this must have been an unusual situation considering no one would dare do this knowing they'd go against Mikey. No one other than him has asked if you were okay because Mikey doesn't allow it.

Akio's expression softened, letting go of the wheel with one of his hands and patted your shoulder as if to comfort you, the simple contact making you heavily flinch and turn your head to look at him in shock, the expression that displayed surprise quickly turned terrified once you processed that someone else other than Mikey dared touch you, you breathed out heavily "N-no..." Again, with that small and scared voice in desperation, Akio ached at the thought of what Mikey had threatened you with to the point you were scared of someone touching you and him finding out about it "I can help you escape this you know, you don't belong here-"

"I belong to him."

Akio frowned at your sudden response, almost as if they were etched to your very soul. Your voice had cracked and you were tightly holding at your chest, slow breathing uneven while forcing yourself to give Akio a light glare "I-I belong to Mikey..." You repeated again in confirmation, yet Akio couldn't sense malicious intent behind the narrowed eyes.

"He hurts you." Akio reminded you, glancing at the traffic signal and finally starting the car once again, driving very slowly to drag this conversations out in hopes of convincing you, not that you had much of a choice "... But he also loves me." You contradicted the other weakly, your glare and demeanor softening once he began driving again, thinking you were going to the restaurant after all.

"That's not love-"

Akio got interrupted when the phone Mikey had given you rang, obviously displaying Mikey's contact name on the screen "Don't pick up." The firm tone made you flinch yet it also stopped thumb from making contact with the screen and answering the call. The phone was probably heavily bugged and only being able to call or receive calls from Mikey and the executives.

Akio knew you were taught by Mikey to follow orders, sure, just MIKEY'S order because no one else would dare talk to you. But what the white haired male had failed to predict was that if someone else told you to do something you would obey them as well because of such taught behavior.

'You shot yourself on the foot with this one.'

You looked back at Akio, fear evident in your eyes but it was unclear if you feared him or the consequences if you didn't pick up Mikey's call, Akio had his bets on the latter "Please don't do this... I-if you take me to the restaurant I won't tell Mikey..." You glanced out of the window while weakly threatening, looking at the roads and Akio appreciated how you listened to him, just holding your phone as it continued to ring. It also confirmed how if he approached this calmly you would listen to him.

"We're not going there... How about we give you a nice place to hide in for the time being until I find a way to make sure you escape Japan, don't you have any relatives that live abroad?" Akio sighed, a small smile playing on his face as he took a different turn than the one he was supposed to, he did already have a small place for you to stay at that was secure enough. And he has already contacted someone you previously had ties with.

Akio knew you wouldn't be easy to convince to leave, all that time with someone like Mikey and how you behaved when Mikey was in a good mood are clear indications that you might have developed Stockholm Syndrome, but because of those punishments your personality had turned more meek and obedient as a result. Akio glanced at your phone once it stopped ringing... Then shortly after it rung again, then stopped. It repeated a few more times as he drove the car on the outskirts of the city and to a more secluded area, only a few cars remaining within the roads in quite a large distance.

Your expression faltered as you stared down at it, looking ready to give in and answer the phone when then non stop messages were sent to you and Akio saw your hands started to tremble from whatever was written "I'll take care of that." And to make sure you didn't get swayed Akio reached in and grabbed your phone, not tearing his eyes away from the road as he rolled down the window of his side, swiftly throwing the phone out much to your surprise.

"I really think this is unnecessary! Please turn back... I-if not he'll be angry." Your voice was calm but the way you sounded so hopeless made Akio sigh, like you knew Mikey would catch up to you sooner or later. He parked the car right in the vacant streets before looking at you. Adrenaline rushing through the male once he faced you without anyone threatening to rip his eyes out. He knew this was a suicide mission but he just couldn't leave you in the hands of Mikey and let you experience hell everyday because Mikey said so.

"Don't you miss your life before Mikey?"

By such a simple question Akio had you stunned, frozen in your seat. Your mouth lightly agape with your pretty [E/C] eyes starring at him in shock. Akio detected you also seemed terrified shortly after.

No sounds were made except for a few cars driving by but Akio couldn't focus on that, he just needed you to admit you wanted to go back, to go away.

But then he saw a forced smile twitching up your lips, tears rolling down your cheeks and Akio perceived your expression as a twisted form of happiness in trying to hide your fear

"No, I don't."

He stared at you with an expressionless gaze then sighed, not surprised yet seeming a little disappointed 'As expected, it's Stockholm Syndrome.'

"... I'm sorry." Your words caught him off guard, Akio wondered if it was because he seemed disappointed, only to notice how your eyes were looking behind him. Realization dawned on the male and the confusion suddenly turned to shock "They-"

His voice was left as a gasp because of how the window got smashed in, Akio wincing after a few broken pieces of the glass stuck on his back, only for the pained sensation to disappear into fear of the hand that grabbed at his hair just like before "I told you before you idiotic fuck." Akio unwillingly glanced behind to look at the person, unsurprisingly it was Sanzu, his exposed arm and hand bleeding from smashing through the window, eyes wide with a crazed glare down at him yet the usual sadistic smile pulled into a grin "If you get too close to them I'll kill you." Sanzu laughed, yanking him forward for a sharp shard of glass still standing on the window to get stuck right on his back.

"Finally!~ I was so sick of you too! And you fucked up in the worst was possible!" The pink haired male announced in twisted joy, momentarily letting go of Akio to open the car door instead. Akio's breathing quickened once he fully processed the situation, hand ever so lightly grazing the shard 'I'm done for huh...' He glanced at you, seeing your apologetic and guilty expression was somehow enough for Akio not to blame you for keeping quiet.

"Look at you, scaring our [Y/N]." Akio heard Sanzu scoff after opening the car door. He then quickly grabbed Akio by the back of his shirt, dragging him out of the car and the impact of getting dropped on his back caused Akio to let out a scream in pain once the shard of glass pushed even further in.

Forcing open his teary eyes Akio saw Sanzu looking back down at him with a grin stretching on his lips "You're fucked." The male laughed and covered Akio's face with a cloth, forcing him to breath in chloroform and despite struggling to get up Sanzu made sure to nearly suffocate him for minutes until he passed out.

Sanzu threw the cloth away, his fits of giggles stopping, gaze suddenly void of emotion as he stared at Akio "Fucker." The pink haired male glared, grabbing the passed out Akio by the collar and swinging his fist right at his face "How." Another punch "Fucking." Akio got punched yet again "Dare. You. Take. My. [Y/N]." The words dripped venom, his breathing heavy as Sanzu punched with each word he spat out.

"Poor thing." Your calm gaze was averted from Sanzu punching Akio to the other side once someone opened the car door and most likely refered to you "You can't catch a break huh sunshine?" You stared at Koko through tired eyes as he held a hand for you to take. Once you did he helped you out of the car and steady on your feet, patting your head while smiling gently "You did good, distracting him enough without much fight until we reached you." You simply nodded at the praise and glanced at your surroundings, seeing everyone already here.

"Dumbass wouldn't have guessed the car was bugged huh?" Rindou laughed with a grin and grabbed Sanzu's arm, stopping him from punching Akio any further in his crazed rage "Let go. This fucker dared take [Y/N] away from us." Sanzu didn't break his glare from Akio's unconscious body but his calm voice held a promised threat towards Rindou, trying to tug his arm away from the other "Calm down Sanzu, remember what Mikey said, we can't kill him yet. Besides, [Y/N] is still here." Ran hummed playfully as he grabbed Sanzu's other arm to help Rindou, making sure he wouldn't have the entire fun of killing the person who dared kidnap you.

Ran glanced at you after his words and once seeing that you were looking back at him he happily waved, the cold glint in his eyes betraying the otherwise cheery expression "See? They're fine." Sanzu looked back at you as well and you had to force yourself to smile and wave back at the three. The pink haired male huffed and calmed his tense body, once the brothers let go of him though he gave Akio one last kick and walked away while mumbling out a string of curses, going to the car to take out the rope and tape.

Your soft giggle made them smile, yes you were fine. Nobody had taken you away. You heard footsteps approaching you, not surprised once seeing it was Mikey. Without even a command or look Koko retracted his hands from you the second Mikey opened his arms, and just like with Kokonoi, Mikey didn't have to say anything as you quickly walked over to him to give him a hug. The pleased hum from Mikey relaxed your tense body as you knew you weren't in trouble.

"Things like this sure are annoying huh angel?" Mikey asked in an irritated mumble and you fastly agreed by wordlessly nodding, head buried on Mikey's shoulder "Looks like I have to keep you safe for a while again, but you don't blame me right? You know this is for your own good." Mikey's hand gently rubbed your back as if to show comfort but you knew what it meant. You'd be locked in again for a while to calm Mikey's nerves and to make sure you were safe.

"Of course I don't blame you Manjiro, you love me the most after all... I know you do it to keep me safe." Your sweet whisper caused Mikey to smile, giving your body a tight squeeze as he titled his head to kiss your forehead "You're such a good angel [Y/N]~ When I get back I'll get you a present." The white haired male giggled and leaned away, cupping your face with both his hands to make you look at him, smiling once the warmth from your cheeks damp because of the tears met his cold hands "You must've been scared being alone with that bastard, but don't worry, I'll take care of him." He then gently kissed your eye lids before motioning for Kakucho to come closer.

You glanced at the scarred man once he approached, immediately taking notice of how the other was giving you a sympathetic expression in response as Mikey carefully pushed you closer to him "Make sure [Y/N] gets back home safely and relaxes." Kakucho nodded at the order, he glanced back at you and his gaze softened "Come on [Y/N], how about I run you a bath and get you some food too?" Kakucho suggested while leading you to his car, you gave one last glance to the man that tried -rescuing- kidnapping you before looking back at Kakucho and nodding "Thanks Kaku-chan, I'd like that." Your soft voice melted away at the sudden agitation Kakucho had when you looked to the person '[Y/N] is nice like that, always caring even for the lowest trash.' Kakucho sighed, reminding himself as he opened the car door for you.

'Which is why we need to get rid of fuckers who take advantage of them.'

Sanzu used the handle of his katana to hit Akio on the head and wake him up, the man groaned in pain as his eyes opened, didn't take long for him to realize he was strapped to a chair in a very familiar environment, the smell of blood and rotting corpses all but assaulted his sense this early on despite how Akio was used to them.

"Morning you bastard, took you a day to wake up huh?" Sanzu smirked down at him, one hand on his hip while the other holding his katana, the gleeful sadism displayed on his face caused Akio's heart to stop, knowing what's to come for him.

But like always he accepted it, he adapted to it. He knew what was going to come for him if he messed with you. But he still did it. And now he doesn't mind his fate being sealed by trying to rescue you, at least he tried.

"I don't regret it."

Those four words halted Sanzu's smirk, the lips dropping into a thin line as the eyes got wide, shaky pupils contracted, glaring at him in all his insane glory because the male wasn't pleading and pathetically crying.

Akio didn't waver, easily tearing his eyes away to glance at the others in the room, all of the executives were present. Rindou and Mochizuki seemed appalled, shocked at the gall Akio had to not regret trying to take you away. Mostly mirroring Sanzu's expression after what he had claimed.

Meanwhile Ran, Takeomi, Kakucho and Kokonoi gazed at him with a bored expression like he was nothing but trash that should be thrown out, irritated at how Akio hasn't learned what he did wrong.

Only Mikey's back faced him, the leader was staring at his phone and his body was unmoving, whatever Akio could glimpse of the screen was moving as if it was a video 'Probably live camera footage.' Mikey was observing you.

"... Ahh you pathetic fool." Takeomi started with an irritated sigh.

"The fuck did you just say!?"

"I see you're more of an idiotic lowlife than expected."

"Fuck off, did you say that because you love them or something!"

"Just because [Y/N] showed you some sympathy doesn't mean they care about you."

"They shouldn't associate themselves with trash like you in the first place but they couldn't help it because they felt bad, do you think you mean something to them?"

"Wipe that smug look off your face dipshit." Sanzu grabbed Akio's jaw and forced the male to look at him, being met with an infuriated Sanzu staring down at him Akio should be scared but he felt... Nothing "Do you think acting brave will lessen your punishment? You should be begging fo-"

"Oh shut up already!" Akio yelled at him, catching Sanzu off guard for the first time ever by how the pink haired man flinched in surprise at the unusual display of bravery "You've been insulting me all this time but what about you huh!? You think [Y/N] loves you from their own free will? I KNOW what happened." Akio snapped back at him with a snarl, eyes narrowing into a glare as he leaned on the chair, almost seeming like he was relaxing and in controll "I did some research of my own and guess what I found, [Y/N] was an old friend of yours who went abroad and lost contact, and when you found their whereabouts again you ripped them away from their family and dragged them to the depths of the underworld because of your selfishness."

Akio scoffed, noticing the agitation of everyone in the room grow tenfold because of what he revealed "I thought it was just Mikey but apperantly no. All you sick fucks are obsessed with [Y/N]! Even though they want nothing to do with you after the bullshit you pulled. Killing their whole family? Dumbasses. Then their fiance right in front of them? Idiots."

The second he finished his sentence Sanzu punched him on the face, a sickening crack being heard shortly after and followed by Akio's pained yelp and groan because of the broken nose "Shut up..." Sanzu glared down at him, Akio detected how desperate the male seemed "Shut up... Shut up! [Y/N] loves us. They wan-"

"No the fuck they don't." Akio shot back confidently, not minding the pain. He was going to die anyways right? Might as well make it worth it- in fact might as well talk so much shit they get angry and kill him immediately. He knew their weak spot anyways; You.

"[Y/N] doesn't WANT anything to do with you, they don't want you and they definitely don't want anything to do with Mikey either-"

"Ahh so annoying." Mikey finally spoke after the prolonged silence, Akio noticed how the executives suddenly held themselves back from shooting Akio off once Mikey spoke 'Probably knew what I wanted to do by ending it quickly.' Akio huffed in annoyance, eyes glued on Mikey once Mikey got up from where he sat and turned to face Akio, Akio expected a glare but instead all Mikey was doing was SMILING at him. Yet the smile was cold and so out of place as he walked closer to Akio.

"Stop that. You're freaking me out." Sanzu snapped to look at Akio in shock once the tied down male snarled in disgust, quickly raising his fist up to hit Akio again from anger only for Mikey to grab Sanzu's wrist and hold him in place easily "Quit it. Let me talk to him." Akio noticed how Sanzu's hand trembled, actually having a bit of difficulty to calm down because of the rage the pink haired male experienced once Akio was so rude to Mikey. But of course he calmed down and listened to his leader.

Akio knitted his brows in confusion when Mikey got in front of him after Sanzu stepped away to give him room, the white haired male was still smiling but then something changed. Mikey's lips then pulled into a grin with his eyes narrowing, dark pools of nothingness staring down at Akio in mockery, sickening giggled following after "So you love [Y/N] too huh... With such a pathetic crush, do you think you'd have a chance of taking them away?"

Akio stared in confusion, especially when Sanzu let out a loud laugh "Ahhh so you DO have a crush on [Y/N]?~" He had been focusing on Mikey but finally noticed the pills on Sanzu's hand. Of course "Ugh, that's gross." Rindou's voice quickly sounded in the form of a gag, disgusted at the thought "Greedy bastards like him don't know when to stop huh?" Kokonoi snickered as he talked with Mochi "He's stupid and weak too, obviously he wouldn't think this was a trap from the beginning." Were... Were they bullying him? Mikey snickered as he heard the talk down from his executives "Hmm~ I knew it. You're always staring at me and [Y/N] during meetings. Is that it? Were you jealous?"

Akio's eye twitched at the proud tone in Mikey's voice "Pfft- Haha!~ Pathetic~" Ran snickered with a grin while Sanzu was full on laughing "Dumb kid." Takeomi sounded like he was too tired of this bullshit, just like Akio was but he heard even Takeomi and Kakucho snickering. Mikey sighed, a helpless nonchalant expression on his face "We put you into a trap and you really fell for it, your stupid crush was really hopeless from the beginning you kn-"

"What does th-"

As soon as Akio started talking, Mikey swiftly grabbed one of the surgical knives set as a torture tool close by and slashed at his face, the sudden scar bleeding out from the left side of his forehead, down his left eye then tilting to the side to run across the top part of his lip. And Akio let out a scream in surprise once blood and tears covered his vision, the sight from his left eye dimming into nothingness.

"I'm not done talking you fucker."

There it was again, Akio felt sick to his stomach at the sudden switch of such intense emotions. And despite panting and staying unfocused from the pain, Mikey's voice grabbed at his attention with little to no problem, with the little vision he had Akio saw the expression Mikey glared down at him with as irritated and disgusted. Even after he had come to terms with the fact he'd die, when Akio returned his sight on Mikey the glare from the invincible leader caused Akio to coil back in fear against his will "You DO love them. Which is why you did this."

Mikey told him as if he knew better, as if he knew Akio inside and out when it came to [Y/N] "You want to take them away because you thought you knew better and you loved them more... My angel being loved by someone so pathetic and weak willed like you... It disgusts me." Mikey's hands clenched into a tight fists, the free hand lifted up and was swiftly brought down to a powerful punch, and unlike with Sanzu, Akio let out another scream in sheer pain from the sensation, blood oozing out of his mouth and nose, and despite the weak, tear filled gaze Akio noticed a small drop of white on the floor, only recognizing it as his tooth a few seconds later.

"... Y-you're a monster..." The sudden words caused the air around them to grow tense. Akio snickered, then laughed as he looked at Mikey, his body trembling "You c-can... Say what you want but it's clear right?" Akio's heart thumped in it's place, threatening to jump out at the sight of Mikey glaring at him just like before, the trash talk and laughter from the executives stopping, even Sanzu paused to stare at Akio with an unsettling look "Only reason you lock them up and keep everyone away is because you KNOW if [Y/N] had any chance to leave they would... Since they wouldn't want to love a monster like you right?"

"... You're wrong." Akio let out a laugh at Mikey's response, the undeniable anger and desperation in Mikey's eyes was nothing but pure satisfaction at its finest "[Y/N] loves me! They love us. If yo-"

"They don't. You've just broken them down to a point where they have no choice but to love you. From now on, Manjiro Sano, you better remember that [Y/N] would never choose to love any of you, ESPECIALLY not you!"

Then Akio finally stopped, growing tired from the yelling he just did and hung his head low, panting, knowing the glares that were sent to him already sealed his fate and the growls only made him shudder in from what torture is to come. Yet he felt relieved, his heart beating peacefully after he finally spat out what he had been meaning to for these past two months.

"Mikey just let me kill him already!"

"The king said to wait but... But that fucker is so... Ahh fuck... To say that about my [Y/N]..."

Rindou's unrestrained need to shed blood and Sanzu's obsessive mumbling was rather annoying, couldn't they just kill him already?

"[Y/N]... Is the light of my life you know..."

Then Mikey spoke again, staring at Akio with that same nonchalant and uninterested expression, the Bonten leader bit back a snarl when a small tingle of sanity inside him agreed with what Akio claimed.

"They're the light of our life... They might not choose to love us now but they did choose to love us before. I just..."

Akio's eyes widened at the words, especially the somewhat soft expression that appeared on Mikey's face. Yet just when Akio thought that maybe Mikey was more aware of the fucked up situation, that he just needed some help, that he DID love you deep down but was swayed by the executives to do this, the hope was ripped away from him when the white haired male giggled and started fidgeting with the other surgical equipments not too far away 'Ah... A prolonged torture huh...'

"I just thought if I teach them again how to love me they will. And they do love me now." Mikey's smile was insanity itself as he looked back at Akio.

"Anyone who doesn't love them as much as we do can just go and rot." Ran's light sadistic chuckle sounded out, the executives stared in delighted glee as Mikey took the first step on punishing the person who dared take you away.

"As long as [Y/N] loves me, as long as they look only at me. I'll even break their legs so they don't leave. But breaking their mind instead did the trick pretty well~"

! ""

Your closed eyes squinted lightly, lips pursing once cold fingers gently caressed your cheek, smearing a certain liquid that prickled annoyingly at your skin until you finally opened your eyes, unsurprisingly being met with Mikey's face the second your tired half lidded gaze cleared up.

Mikey smiled once seeing your lovely [E/C] on him, retracting his hand and you ignored the fact it was bloody "Mikey..." The smile noticeably fell when you called out to him and you let out a sleepy whine to indicate you weren't well awake yet "Manjiro, when did you come back...?" You quickly corrected your mistake, reaching out to gently cup his face with one hand, Mikey seemed content enough with your action and nuzzled your warm hand.

The small blood splatters on his face seemed to rub off on your hand "I came back just now. Did you miss me?~" Mikey asked jokingly while putting his hand on top of yours, holding it still as he tilted his head to give your palm a soft kiss. You stared at the adoring expression on Mikey's face. The doubts from before disappearing.

"I couldn't sleep well without you here 'Jiro." You answered back with a giggle, the respon only making Mikey happier. He pushed your hand behind him and started leaning down, instantly knowing what to do, you hugged his neck as Mikey started peppering your face with kisses, his hand gently cupping your face and then patting your hair "Couldn't sleep well without me? Do you love me that much?~" The teasing words caused you to giggle, especially once he kissed down your neck to tickle you "Mhm!~"

Mikey's face warmed up to a light pink, the soft smile settling on his face pleasantly. Having left his executives to deal with the scrap after Mikey himself got his anger out. But once Mikey leaned up to get a better look at you again his expression fell. Eyes going wide and smile faltering at now realizing he had gotten that pest's blood all over you while kissing and touching you.

'He's close to you again...' Mikey clenched his jaw, glaring down in annoyance "Filthy..." He uttered in disdain as his hands behind to shake, he wanted to tear you apart because of being so close with that fucker even though Akio's supposed to be dead now.

Your breathing stopped for a moment but Mikey's hand sliding from your cheek to your neck and grasping it quickly brought you back to reality "Saying I'm filthy... You're so mean." But all you did was pout, thankfully the tears bubbling up on your eyes because of fear helped to add to the effect and Mikey stilled at your words.

The uncaring features softened into an apologetic look "I didn't mean you darling, I'm sorry."

"Make it up to me then."

"What do you want? I'll get you anything." Mikey quickly gave into your playfully demanding tone so he could gain forgiveness, only for your pout to turn into a shy smile "Let's have a bath together! You're also a little dirty so I can help you wash up as well." You giggled jokingly and reached up to poke his cheek, making sure it was a spot that wasn't stained with blood.

Mikey blinked in surprise at your request before his face heated up into a bright red "[Y/N]~" The man all but whined softly and leaned down to nuzzle at your chest "I love you~" You chuckled and patted his head, expression quickly faltering into discomfort when he wasn't looking "I love you too."

Mikey smiled peacefully and stood up from the bed, wrapping his arms around you and easily picking you up bridal style "I took care of the trash." He finally informed you while walking to the bathroom, his eyes met yours, a confused smile on your face as you tilted your head and nodded "Good job~" You laid your head on his shoulder, Mikey observed your calmly smiling expression and grinned in victory, eyes cold and uncaring.

'See? [Y/N] probably doesn't even remember you. They will continue to love only me even if I have to break them completely.'

what about farmer being pregnant and instead of like an announcement dinner or something seb goes to robin and orders a nursery to suprise her? :)

Y'all making me get baby feels but like... I'm not even mad

Amelia had known for three days and two hours that she was pregnant. She stressed for every second of that time and she was sure that Sebastian was starting to get worried. He had brought up the idea of going to see Harvey and making sure she wasn't sick. She couldn't keep trying to handle this on her own.

He was her husband and he spent so much time going out of his way to prove how much he loved her.

But does he even want a child? Whenever a joke was made, he was quick to make jokes like ‘oh, I sure as hell hope not’ or ‘you’d better knock on wood’ if someone joked and said that maybe she was pregnant. Regardless, she panicked. She knew he wouldn't leave her because of it; he wasn't that kind of guy. But if he got too stressed out or they fought more… She couldn't forgive herself.

It was somewhere around 5:45 am when she rolled over to wrap her arm around him, only for the bed to be empty. She sat up, shifting to stand before grabbing his t-shirt from the dresser and walking out to find him.

He had always loved when she wore only his shirt.

When she stepped out, she saw him, his back to her as he brewed coffee. This was certainly one thing she'd miss with a kid around, sneaking looks at her husband's body when he walked around in his underwear.

She walked up behind him before slipping her arms around his waist and resting her head on his back.

He jumped, nearly dropping the mug of coffee before he settled, putting the cup on the counter with a small, tired smile.

“Hey, handsome,” she hummed, pressing a kiss between his shoulder blades, prompting him to shift, turning to face her for a gentle morning kiss before she continued, “couldn't sleep again?”

He tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear, though it was no use, her hair wild from sleep.

“Yeah, figured I’d get up and make us some coffee.” She stood on her toes to steal another kiss, finding that she was oddly hungry for him instead of needing coffee. She behaved though, knowing he was definitely not a morning person.

She slipped from his arms and turned to go fill Loaf’s bowl for when he crawled out of his own bed. As she stepped away, Sebastian smirked, arching an eyebrow and letting out a low whistle.

“You’re pretty cruel, you know,” he took a small drink of his coffee, his eyes never leaving hers, “putting on my favorite shirt and coming out here like I wouldn't notice.”

Her smirk mirrored his as she chuckled, “I have no idea what you're talking about,” she hummed, stretching her arms above her head so the shirt rode up, revealing her naked ass.

This might actually be a pretty good morning.

She heard him taking long strides over to her, coffee forgotten on the counter. When he reached her, his hands found her hips, pulling her back against him to feel just how cruel she was being. He bent and pressed a kiss to the soft below her ear, her breath hitching as he nipped at her ear lobe, whispering in a gravelly voice, “go ahead and feed Loaf. I've got some rainy day plans for us.”

She nodded, lower lip drawn between her teeth as sparks flew through her whole being, pooling in her lower belly.

Where there was a baby.

She shook the thought away as Sebastian walked back to his coffee, readjusting himself as he watched her. The smirk she loved so much stayed fixed on her body, which she made sure to show off as well as she could, bending at the waist to open the container, giving him a view that would help make this morning very interesting.

Her plans screeched to a halt as she actually opened the container, the smell of dog food wafting up into her face. Suddenly, she knew she was going to puke any second.

She looked over at Sebastian in a brief panic before running to the bathroom, barely making it to the toilet before the contents of her stomach emptied. He must have run behind her, his whole body tense as he tied her hair back and rubbed her back gently.

“We need to go see Harvey today. This is the third time you've puked without any warning and it's really not okay, Ames. I'm getting worried,” he rambled, trying and failing to mask his panic.

Her eyes started to well up with tears as she wiped her mouth, flushing before pulling her knees to her chest, “I'm fine, Seb. Really.”

She sounded hardly convincing as she choked on a sob.

There was no way she couldn't not tell him now. And a million ‘what if’s plagued her mind as he sat in front of her, any facade of calm faded.

“Ames, look at you. You're not fine. I need to call Harvey, I'm sorry,” he shifted, standing and turning toward the door.

“Seb, wait,” she managed, wiping her tears before standing and walking to him, grasping his hands with all of her might, “it's… I just…” she looked up at him, rivers of tears falling, “I'm scared you'll… Be mad or… Freak out…”

His eyes moved quickly, scanning every inch of her face. His voice was soft when he responded, cupping her face in his hands to wipe her tears away, “love, you know I love you more than anything in this world,” he gave a small smile, teasing her just a little, “even sashimi. And that's a lot of love,” she laughed through her tears, leaning into his hand, “Ames, you can tell me anything.”

He really didn't know. Had no suspicion.

She searched his face for a moment before closing her eyes and taking a deep breath, “I'm nine and a half weeks pregnant,” she breathed, her voice hardly audible.

He stood there frozen for a moment, her face cupped in his hands, the only change being his intake of breath and eyes widening. After a moment, just when she was about to panic, his expression formed into a small smile. The fear wasn't gone, but there was actual excitement in his eyes. Her heart soared as he pressed a loving kiss to her head. He rests his forehead on hers, letting out a breathy laugh.

“That's what it is… We're having a baby…”

Her tears spilled over freshly before she wrapped him in a hug, releasing every ounce of relief she held. He was genuinely excited, which made her realize… So was she.

Sebastian picked up a lot of the work around the farm, much to Amelia’s frustration. The second she started to show, he shifted into overdrive, making sure she was as relaxed and happy as possible. They had just finished dinner and he sit on the couch with her head in his lap. With one hand, he toyed with her hair while the other one rested on the small bump forming in her belly. He often touched her belly, having fallen in love with the baby the second he saw the little bean on the sonogram. When he heard the heartbeat? He was already wrapped around the baby's tiny finger.

She looked up at him, his gaze turning to hers as they sit there.

“Seb, we have to tell people. They're gonna know I'm not just gaining weight. Especially when you go to get me some more olives and ice cream.”

He chuckled, considering for a moment.

“I want to tell my mom and Sam before anyone else.”

She hummed in agreement before laughing and pointing to the area behind them, “good because we need her to build the nursery before we lose track of time.”

He nodded for a moment before a devious grin spread over his face.

“No problem. I have an idea.”

── ⋅ ⋅ ── ✩ ── ⋅ ⋅ ──

They walked together up the mountain path, hand in hand as they buzzed with excitement. Seb had brought some ‘sketches and ideas’ with him to show his mom, which she'd politely take into consideration. But as she leafed through, the latest sonogram should be there, a small note along the top stating simply ʼHi Grandma!ʼ

Thankfully, it was cool enough for Amelia to wear layers and effectively hide the growing bump.

They stepped inside, Robin smiling brightly as she saw the two. She came around the counter, greeting them both with hugs.

“Hey! I feel like I haven't seen you both in so long!” she teased, gesturing to the papers Sebastian held, “what brings you guys in today? A barn or second coop, or–”

“We actually wanted to upgrade the house a bit” he interjected, met with a surprised look, though not suspicious.  He held out the manilla folder, carefully handing it over. Sebastian slipped his hand into Amelia's before nodding a silent hello to Maru, who was in the lab. He continued, “we have some pretty basic ideas, though we know we can trust you regardless.”

She beamed and started leafing through the pages, commenting on each idea until she stopped mid-sentence, the small image now facing her.

Sebastian squeezed her hand, hiding his nerves as she touched it with a shaky hand before looking between her son and daughter-in-law. Her eyes were glistening as she pointed at Amelia as if perhaps it was a friend’s or a random photo. Sebastian, without hesitation, shook his head no before pointing to himself, obviously trying to make her laugh. Make her do anything.

“Oh Yoba, you're not joking? I swear, Sebastian Ainsley if you're pranking me…”

He held up his hands in surrender, laughing aloud as she wiped tears from her face, “that would just be mean, grandma.”

He joked, though it only made her run around the counter and throw her arms around them, laughing and firing questions off faster than they could answer.

Amelia unzipped her jacket and moved Robin’s hand to the small bump, making the woman stop in her tracks, a fresh set of tears falling as she spoke, her voice quiet through her tears, “my Sebby is going to be a father…”

Amelia beamed as Robin wrapped her son in a tight hug, Sebastian throwing Amelia a look. He was happier than he'd been since the wedding day.

Maru heard Robin and came over quickly, Demetrius behind her, concern plain across his expression as Maru spoke, “what's wrong? Is everything okay-” she caught sight of the sonogram and then the bump before she shouted in surprise, “you guys are having a baby?!”

Sebastian laughed and shifted as Maru rambled excitedly about being an aunt and all of the cool ideas she had for things she could build already.

Sebastian shared a look with Demetrius, who, to Sebastian’s shock, offered a kind smile and nod before turning to try and reel Maru back in. Robin wiped at her eyes before tapping the sketches on the table, “you need a nursery then?”

Sebastian gave a nod, “we have all of the necessary materials and money at the house, we just wanted–”

“We'll pay for the addition to the house,” Demetrius called over, surprising everyone there. He laughed and put his arm around Maru, who had hugged him from his side, “as grandparents, it's our job to spoil this child,” he looked pointedly at Sebastian, “and I want to show you that we're here as resources and family. Congratulations, you two.” Sebastian stood and stared for a moment in shock before noting Amelia was zipping her coat back up, a telltale sign she was ready to go home.  “Thank you so much, all of you,” he started, already feeling a million times lighter, “it means so much. Text us if you need anything or if you just want to gush about the baby,” he teases, watching as Robin furiously started sketching out designs.

Needless to say, Sam lost his mind in excitement.

The whole town will know by nightfall. There was no way Jodi didn't hear Sam yell it out.

Honestly, it just made their job easier.

— Ran eyes the stairs that lead to his childhood home with hesitation. He glances at the rusted metal on the railing in remembrance — staring at the chipped paint on the walls next door. His initials are still carved into the wood below — his brother’s mirroring his own underneath.

Ran hasn’t seen his mother in a long time. He hasn’t been back home for even longer.

He's not sure he would even call this place home.

He'd messed up terribly at the age of thirteen, and had spent a good amount of time in a correctional facility to make up for it. By the time he was out, he'd decided to leave the apartment he’d grown up in behind. He didn't give his mother much room to object — she didn’t have it in her to do so either. She'd grown weary of her words falling on deaf ears. She loved her boys, she really did. But there was only so much her heart could take — there was only so much destruction she'd allow them to partake in under her roof. She’d simply nodded when he told her he was leaving, not bothering to meet his gaze. But he remembers the fight she’d put up when Rindou had said he was coming too. He remembers the ache in his heart at being cast to the side. And he wonders if he would’ve stayed if she had begged him to. He wonders what it would be like for her to fight for him too.

At fifteen, he’d dropped out of school. At twenty, he was an active member in a street gang. He never went to visit her — he never told her how he was doing either. Rindou left out as many details as he could when he did. For their sake and for her own, she never asked anyway.

The two boys cleaned up their act as they got older. They'd started their own business — had grown extremely well known and successful in the industry too.

Still, he never called. Still, he rarely went to visit.

Yet here he was, standing at her doorstep, debating over whether or not he should knock ─ over whether or not it was wise to come speak to her. He had something to tell her; something really important. But a part of him didn’t want to see her look at him in disappointment — a part of him wanted to avoid her look of regret. It was that part of him that had decided to avoid her altogether. He despised that look — he hated how inferior and small it made him feel. Like he was fifteen all over again. Like he wasn’t edging thirty-five. Like he hasn’t long since been responsible for not only himself, but others too.

He had a difficult relationship with his mother. A push and pull he'd never been able to figure out. They were too much alike. He never felt like he was enough.

She wasn't a cruel woman. She wasn't evil by any means. She'd been good to him — good to the both of them. She always has been. She always would be.

But he's just like her — a part of her ribs, a part of her soul. He's just like her and it terrified her to her core. She’s just like him and it made him want to hate her even more.

But a mother was a mother, and he was still her boy. A mother was a mother, and he had no choice.

So he sighs, and he brings his knuckles up to the door.

He hears her shuffle around before it opens and she blinks at him in surprise. She doesn’t smile but she reaches for him immediately and he bends to let her hug him. Her embrace lasts only for a moment. He doesn’t think he could stand it if it lasted any longer. Fragile arms hold his face, scolding him for looking so gaunt — criticizing him for smelling like smoke.

He thinks he's home now, here with her words. He wonders if this was still home.

Whatever that meant at this point. Whatever that was supposed to mean.

She ushers him inside and he's nervous all over again. He can't remember the last time he'd been this scared to face her.

Maybe it was when Rindou had broken his arm and he had to be the one to tell her — when he was only seven and it was his fault. He should’ve looked after his brother better. He should’ve stopped him from his own stupidity.

Or maybe it was when she'd stared at him behind the visiting glass at the juvenile prison — when she’d stared at the bruise on his face and the avoidance in his gaze and didn’t bother saying a single word to him.

He furrows his brows at the flurry of thoughts. He doesn’t want to remember any of that at all.

She doesn't sit, so he follows her into the kitchen. He eyes the sliced meat and the cloves and the spices scattered across the counter. He takes a seat at the small dining table in his childhood home and she goes back to cooking.

"What is it?" she asks him, breaking the silence.

Her back is to him as she stirs the pot and he stares at her — at how small she is compared to him —at how small everything here was now that he was older and taller.

"What makes you think it's anything?" he replies.

She rolls her eyes, licking her teeth.

"Don't start with me, boy. You never visit without your brother."

He looks down at his knuckles. He eyes the emptiness in his hands.

"What's going on?" she says again. Her voice is still sharp but there’s a softness to it. Like she's prepared for the worst. Like she can handle it if he told her.

He sighs, leaning back in the wood chair. It creaks under his weight and he scratches at the worn out material of the table. It was old. Everything here was so old. She'd refused to let them move her out even after they'd had the means to. "Leave it alone,” she had said. “I'm fine with the way things are."

Ran had shrugged, dropping the subject after the first time they’d brought it up, but Rindou had kept insisting.

He never got his way in the end.

"I've been seeing someone," he tells her. She pauses her stirring, but doesn't turn around.

He keeps going, rubbing the back of his neck as he tenses.

"For about a year. A little longer than that, I think."

She doesn’t say a word as she holds her breath, pretending to reach for the salt instead — as if she hasn’t used enough of it already — as if she needed anymore.

"She’s pregnant, Ma."

Her eyes are sharp and wide as she turns to look at him. He sees himself in her silent rage. He sees himself in the lavender of her fury. And he knows it's rage for your sake. He knows what she's thinking.

That poor girl. That poor, poor girl.

It's courtesy for you. It's concern and worry for a girl she hasn't even met yet.

Not for him. He doesn't think it's ever been for him.

"Is she your woman?"

He dwells on the question for a moment, pondering between the literal and the figurative. He decides to go with the former.

"She was.”

“Was?”

“I messed up," he reveals.

"What did you do?" Her anger is silent ─ it's quiet and building.

"I said some shit I shouldn't have when I found out."

There it was. There it is.

That look of disappointment he'd wanted to avoid — that silence he hated drowning in.

Your fault, the still air seemed to ring out. It’s all your fault.

"Is she keeping it?"

He glances at her when he replies.

"Yeah."

"Do you plan to be in their lives? Because if you don't, you leave that girl alone. You do your part financially, and you leave her alone. Do you understand me?"

The skin around her knuckles turns a ghastly white as her grip tightens against the ladle in her palm.

She’s quick to speak — quick to assume. Quick to judge — quick to decide for him. She’s right, he knows that. She’s always been right. But he hates the lack of autonomy — he hates that he gets no say when it comes to her. He digs his nails into the skin of his palm and he wonders just how hard he'd have to press to dissipate his anger — just how much would it take to stop the pressure in his lungs.

But he thinks of you, and he decides against it. He thinks of you, and he decides to explain instead.

He tells her that you’d broken up with him after all that he’d said. He tells her that he'd apologized not even a week later. He would've apologized earlier but you had refused to see him. He’d wanted to say sorry immediately, but you wouldn't let him.

He tells her what he’d told you — that he wanted to be with you, that he wanted to take care of you and the baby. And he tells her what you'd told him — that you'd quietly nodded, accepting his words, but that you wouldn't take him back. Not yet at least. Not so soon after that.

"I need to have this child first," you had said at the time. "I need to know you won't leave when I do."

She leaves the ladle in the pot and moves to sit at the table in front of him, listening intently. It's the most she’s ever heard him say. It's the most he's ever directly said to her about his life.

It's ironic and heartbreaking ─ the sad reality of a mother and son who know nothing of each other — the truth behind those who have made no attempts to forgive and to heal and to move on with one another.

She sits back.

"Smart girl. Good on her."

He runs a hand across his face, groaning. "Come on, Ma."

She sighs, her chin in her palm as she stares at her eldest son.

"I'm worried about your choice in women though."

He laughs at that. For the first time in a long time, he laughs with his mother. For the first time in a longer time, she smiles back.

He remembers when she’d walked in on him having sex just after he’d turned eighteen — at how angry she’d been that the woman had been in her late, late twenties. And though she’d been visiting the apartment out of concern for her kids and their terrible eating habits — she had still ended up throwing her shoes at the both of them. He thought she was crazy at the time. He had been convinced she was out to make his life a living hell. But he understands now — why she'd been so angry. He gets why she'd been so scared and hurt — why her fear that he’d get taken advantage of had blinded her with rage.

She remembers when Rindou had shown her a picture of the girl Ran had been dating when he was twenty-one. She remembers looking at the screen, shaking her head in disappointment. She could tell from her eyes alone that the girl had ill intentions — that she was no good at all. She’d told Rindou that much on his way out. He’d shrugged, thinking nothing of it.

She’d found out later that the two boys had been robbed — that they'd nearly been jumped — and that the girl had been involved.

Ran doesn’t speak to his mother in the hospital. She’d doted on Rindou the entire time instead.

The two of them sigh synchronously.

"You’ll like her more than you like me," he says into the still air.

She tilts her head at him, and she wonders what he thinks her perception of him is. It doesn’t seem good. It doesn’t seem good at all. And she can’t help but wonder if she is to blame.

“No, you’ll love her,” he reiterates.

There’s a fond smile on his face as he looks back at his mother, and she wonders idly about the girl that was able to bring a gentle expression to her son’s face at the mere mention of her presence.

"I'd like to meet her — the mother of your child. I want to meet her."

He looks at her, and he nods. He was hoping she’d say that. She looks back at him, and she tries to smile. She was hoping he’d agree.

The two of them were a mirror image of each other in ways they would never understand, in ways they could never explain. They tore each other apart and the pieces never fit together properly again. There was room for Rindou. There was always room for his mistakes.

But Ran had to cut himself up piece by piece to find a place. He’d had to tip toe through the mess and cut his skin against her shattered fury before he’d given up altogether. She didn’t know he’d been looking so desperately. He didn’t know he didn’t have to look that far.

"Yeah.” He says. “Yeah, I'll bring her over."

She tells him that it seems like the two of you are on good terms despite it all, and he chuckles, nodding in agreement. He feels himself grow weary when he tells her that he's proposed to you multiple times since then, and that you'd rejected him every time.

She laughs a little too loudly for his liking and he shoots her a glare.

"Bring her over soon. I need to meet this girl."

She goes to make him a plate, ignoring his protests as she places it in front of him on the table. He sighs in exaggeration at her insistence and she shakes her head as she stands before him, watching as foregoes his etiquette. She musses his hair before her gaze falls to a silver strand in the darkness of his hair, and her stomach sinks with guilt. She hadn't realized how much older he'd gotten. She hadn’t noticed all that she’s missed out on. She clears her throat, ridding herself of the thought as she peers at her son once more.

"How old is she, by the way?"

His mouth is full, when he replies "twenty-four" and she smacks the back of his neck immediately — ignorant of the food he chokes on.

"You fucking idiot."

"Give it up, woman.”

She shakes her head, mumbling obscenities to herself as she washes the dishes.

He doesn’t leave until he finishes his plate.

He calls you on his way home, your voice soothing him as his phone connects to the speakers in his car.

"Hello, gorgeous,” he says, the moment you pick up.

"What’s wrong?"

He rubs at his temple at your response.

"I can flirt with the mother of my unborn child without there being an ulterior motive, you know."

"I know." you say. There’s a pause — a brief one from your end. "But there is something, isn't there?"

He stares at the screen. There is.

He wonders how you know. He wonders about all that you know. He avoids your question instead.

"What are you doing this weekend?"

You hum in thought.

“I have an appointment on Saturday.”

“For what?” He furrows his brow. He’d been consistently attending the ones you’d told him about. This was the first he’d heard of this one. “Do you want me to come with you?”

“No, it’s okay,” you say. “I just need to get blood drawn, it shouldn’t take long.”

“Alright. What are you doing after?”

"Nothing, I think,” you respond as you fold a t-shirt — his t-shirt. “Why?"

"My mom wants to meet you."

There's another pause from your end. There was more weight attached to this one — more emotion and fear, worry and concern.

"You told her?"

"I did."

"What did she say?"

You're nervous — a little scared, even. He can tell by the subtle change in the lilt of your voice. You didn’t want her to think of you as an ‘easy girl’. You knew that it was traditionally frowned upon to have a child before marriage. Your grandmother had given the two of you an earful herself. “Put a ring on her finger,” she’d scolded him. “She won’t let me,” he’d complained right back. It went well in the end. It went better than you would’ve thought.

But you’d never met his mother before. He rarely spoke to you about her at all. And you're worried she’ll look down on you — that she'll hate you before you’re able to be anyone but the mother of her son’s child. You’re scared that your identity will be reduced to just that.

The low tone of his voice brings you back, and you grip the phone to your ear as he responds.

"That she wants to meet you."

You furrow your brows.

"That's it?"

"Yeah.”

“Really?”

“What do you want me to say? That she cursed me out for knocking you up? She's on your side, you know. Called you a smart girl for not taking a ‘good for nothing’ man like me back. The hag gave birth to me but she's siding with you. I can’t believe this shit." He shakes his head in fake disbelief. He’d expected just as much from her anyway. But you didn’t need to know that.

You laugh, and he loves it. You laugh, and he loves you. The sound makes its way around his car and he finds comfort in the beauty of your joy.

"I miss you," he says after a minute. It's been a few days since he'd last seen you — a few days too long.

You hum again in response.

He drives in the quiet for a little, listening as you move around, and he wonders what you're doing in the apartment on your own.

"I miss you too," you finally confess.

Your voice is soft — quiet. He might’ve missed it had his phone not been connected to the speakers in his car. The gentle smile reserved just for you makes its way back onto his face and he glances at your name on the screen.

"How are you? How's the baby?"

He nears the daunting building of his penthouse, but he finds himself thinking more and more about you and your one-bedroom apartment and all the space you let him take up when he was with you. He wonders if you'd let him come over. He wonders if you’d let him stay.

Home. He thinks briefly of the word again and he finds that there’s a person attached to it now — and he knows that it’s never been a place. Not for him at least. Not since you.

You eye your belly, stroking the swell of your stomach.

"She's good. A little fussy today though."

“She's keeping you up?”

You sigh, and he knows then that the baby had been relentless in her efforts to do so.

“She thinks it’s fun to kick my bladder.”

He snorts. Funny kid.

"And you? How are you?"

Your heart flutters just a little at his incessant need to check up on you.

"I'm okay."

He tells you he wants you to keep talking to him. Talk about anything, talk about whatever — just until he gets home. He doesn't tell you why. He doesn’t need to either. You knew that his relationship with his mother was strained. You knew they had a hard time being around each other. And you knew that his nerves were probably shot.

So you sit on the couch and you tell him about your day — what you watched, what you ate, how many times your baby kicked, and a few of the names you'd been considering. You talk and it's everything to him — you talk, and you breathe life back into him. You're a little distracted in your speech, pausing at odd times, forgetting your train of thought here and there, and he figures you must be doing something else while talking to him. He doesn't tell you that he's been sitting in the garage of his penthouse for seven minutes now. He doesn't tell you that he's already home. It's selfish of him, but he needs you to ground him for just a little longer — for just a bit more.

"I have to pee, Ran."

He tilts his head against the headrest, grinning as you interrupt his train of thought.

"By all means, baby. Go ahead."

"Pervert.”

He laughs and the concern in your chest eases up just a little. He's okay. He'd be okay. He tells you he'll see you soon, and you nod in agreement.

“I love you," he says before you can hang up.

And you want to say it back like you used to. You want to say it back like you've always done before.

But you don't. Not yet.

Not yet.

"I know," is your quiet response.

And he's thankful for that at least. He's thankful that you know.

He lights a cigarette as he leans against his car in wait for you. You hated when he smoked in your apartment, but you’d despised it even more when you’d gotten pregnant. He’d resorted to smoking outside when he came to visit — a plastic chair set aside just for him now resided on your balcony. You’d read his text, but you hadn’t responded — so he smokes and he waits, and he eyes your door as he exhales. He takes another drag before he crushes the stick of nicotine underneath his shoe, and he runs a hand through his hair as he makes his way up to the second floor.

He knocks and he waits for a moment. He decides to wait another two.

You open the door right before he’s about to knock again and his eyes soften instantly at the sight of you.

He was so lucky. He was so ridiculously lucky. You were always so lovely — always so beautiful.

But your eyes are wet and there’s a pout on your lips — a slight tremble to them that you’re trying to hide. He finds that he can’t even greet you properly. His first thought is to comfort you instead.

“What’s wrong, baby?”

He moves one hand to the small of your back, the other shifting to cradle your bump instead. You’re beautiful in the dress you’d decided to wear and you’re pretty as you look up at him with tears in your eyes.

“What’s wrong, love?” he says again.

“My shoes won’t fit.”

He blinks at you as he processes your words, and he resists the urge to smile.

“My feet hurt and my shoes won’t fit. Don’t laugh at me, asshole.”

You almost cry, and he moves his thumbs to your lash line before you do.

“Not laughing at you, baby,” he says, hiding his grin. “Come on, princess.”

He takes your hand and guides you to the dining table. You sit, wiping at your eyes while he digs through the small pile of shoes in your closet. He finds a loose pair of sandals that he knew had to fit, and he waves them once over his head.

“Ta-da.”

He kneels in front of you, reaching for your feet as he switches your shoes out for you. He slips the sandals on, long fingers gently tugging at the straps, and he rubs at your feet before he smiles up at you. He looks tired, you think. He looks a little scared.

You go to reach for his face but he stands before you’re able to stroke his cheek.

“Where’s your purse, baby? We gotta go.”

You nod, grabbing your bag, and he takes your palm in his silently as he locks your door behind the two of you. He pockets your key and you understand. You know that he wants you to stay over at his place tonight.

And maybe exes shouldn’t treat each other like you and him. Maybe they shouldn’t brush eyelashes off of each other’s cheeks. Maybe they shouldn’t have copies of each other’s keys. Maybe he shouldn’t kiss your jaw. Maybe you shouldn’t grip his wrist.

But the lines have been crossed in more ways than one, and the bridging continued to occur.

You don't let go of his hand the rest of the way there. He doesn’t think he wants you to either.

You’re scared.

You’re really, really nervous. Your hand naturally drifts to your belly, and you shy away to stand behind him when he knocks on the door.

He turns to kiss your forehead, brushing your cheek gently in the process.

“It’ll be fine,” he says. “It’s okay.”

You listen as the door unlocks — you watch as it creaks on its own hinges and opens. Ran bends to kiss his mother’s cheek and you watch as a thin hand pats his back before a woman speaks.

“Yeah, yeah. Where’s the girl?”

He rolls his eyes and moves slightly out of the way. You peer at her from behind him and her eyes widen. You smile and it’s filled with nerves — filled with kindness and a gentle nature.

She stares at you in awe. She stares at you in wonder.

“Oh.”

What good could her son have possibly done in this lifetime, and how quickly was he repaid for it with you? She can’t help but reach for you. She hesitates for a moment, worried it’ll make you uncomfortable, but you step into her embrace and she hugs you. She hugs you and she says nothing else, and you want to cry at how tightly she holds you. You want to break down at how much she looked like him.

She’s a thin, spindly woman — shorter than her son, but a little taller than the average woman. Her hair is long and black — her face framed with strands of gray. Her eyes crinkle when she smiles and your heart aches. The lavender in her gaze looked just like his. The subtle hurt in her eyes mirrored his own too.

He looks away — gazing into his childhood home instead.

He can’t look at her. He can’t look at you.

She ushers the two of you inside, and you follow her into the kitchen. She talks, and you listen. And though her gaze had drifted to your belly a few times over, she doesn't say anything about the baby. She doesn’t say anything at all. He watches as the two of you fall into a natural rhythm, and he lingers near the entry as you help her set the table, fingers twisting the ring in his pocket. He expects that rejection is inevitable tonight as well.

Dinner is quiet. They don’t talk to each other much. The air isn’t tense, but it’s brutal in its presence. It’s a silence they’re used to — a silence they’re unable to live without. She asks about you, and you tell her all that you can. She asks and you answer and it isn’t so bad. It isn’t so bad at all.

You’re unable to read the expression on Ran's face as he picks at his food, and your brows furrow in slight concern as you stand to help her clear the table.

It’s then that he rolls his sleeves up.

It’s then that she gives a disapproving look and sigh as her gaze drifts to the tattoo wrapped around his arm.

She shakes her head and he drops the plates into the sink. You flinch at the sound.

“Are you gonna react like that every time?”

Her eyes flit to you for a second, before her gaze sharpens at her son.

“When your kid comes home at thirteen with a tattoo covering the entire left side of their body, you’d be bitter about it for a long time too.”

“It’s been twenty years, Ma.”

“Like I give a shit,” she mutters as she moves to turn the sink water on.

He’s angry now. You watch in worry as they bring out the worst in each other. You watch as they weave a web of sorrow — you watch as they strike and suffocate one another.

“My kid can mess up all she wants. She’ll still be my fucking kid.”

He doesn’t realize that she knows that already. He doesn’t get that she knows that very well. He’s still her son. He’s still her boy. And she hurts because he’d sought refuge in other vices instead of her. She hurts because she had no one to blame but herself. She quiets when her gaze drifts to you once more and she turns to the pot on the stove, busying herself with its contents.

Your eyes are wide as you stare at your lover.

His chest rises and falls in resentment as he glares at her, before he reaches for his cigarettes, making his way back outside.

You don’t know what to do with yourself. You don’t know what you’re supposed to say. You don’t know who to comfort. You don’t think it’s your place to even do so.

It’s then that she turns to you, the lilac in her eyes shining underneath the dim kitchen lights.

“You’re having a girl?”

It’s the first time she’s acknowledged the baby. You remember what he’d said in the car, as he’d gazed at the traffic with a forlorn expression. “She’s always wanted a girl.” He’d smiled in exhaustion before he’d turned to pinch your nose. “Now she gets two.”

You blink back at her and you nod.

“Yes,” is all you can say.

Her eyes soften, and she turns to occupy herself with the mess on the counter.

Your gaze drift to the door as it shuts loudly behind him and you yearn for the man you love. You leave the kitchen quietly as you turn to look for him.

You find him seated at the bottom of the stairs, fiddling with the box in his hands.

The cigarette lights up his face momentarily as he brings the nicotine up to his face and he breathes out into the still air, shaking his head as he rests his arms on his knees.

He hears the front door open behind him and he knows it’s you. It could only be you.

Your smile is soft — nervous, even — as you close the screen door behind you gently. He puts the cigarette out before he scoots over a little, making room for you as you make your way down, and he laughs as you awkwardly situate yourself beside him. You pinch his bicep in fake irritation and he grins as he kisses your forehead in greeting. You sigh as you settle down beside him.

“Are you okay?” he asks you.

“Are you?” you retaliate.

Your voice is soft. He thinks you must be getting sleepy.

“Yeah, I'm good. Nothing I haven’t heard before.”

He doesn’t say anything else — looking out into the now quiet neighborhood instead.

Soon, it would be loud again. Soon, the doors would open and people would make their way downtown — to pachinko parlors, and nightclubs, to convenience stores, and karaoke.

But right now, the air is still. Right now, Roppongi was surprisingly quiet.

You reach for his hand in the flickering dark. You trace the lines on his palm. You trace the scars and the outline of his rings. You trace his name and you trace yours. You trace a heart in between. Neither of you says a word. But as you lean your head against his shoulder, you look out into the world and you wonder what he sees. The apartment complex he’d grown up in was worn down and dull. Yet it’s surrounded by bright lights. Everything was full of color.

What was a child expected to do on their own in this hub of chaos? Where was a child expected to go?

“She can’t stand the sight of me,” he says — breaking the stillness on his own.

“She thinks I corrupted Rindou,” he chuckles darkly at that. Your heart aches at his words.

“You didn’t.”

He pretends like he doesn’t hear you.

“She thinks I’m gonna ruin your life too.” He glances at your belly. “Yours and hers.”

“You won’t,” you follow up — not bothering to entertain the thought.

He stares off, rubbing his hands together as he pulls his palm out and away from yours.

“How do you know?”

“I won’t let you,” you whisper.

You angle your knees towards him and you stare at the man before you with longing in your eyes. How hurt he was — sitting here beside you — how scarred and flawed, how abandoned and lost.

You hold his face and you tilt your head in worry, and his heart races at the sight. It hurts. It hurts so bad. And he’s sorry. He’s sorry for all that he’s ever done. He’s sorry for what he might do. He’s sorry for any tears he’s made you shed. He doesn’t want to fail you too.

You kiss his jaw and you pull him into you. His eyes widen at the words you utter against him.

“It’s not your fault,” you say.

He grips your dress.

“It’s not your fault,” you repeat.

He holds you tighter.

He wants to believe you. He hopes that one day, he will.

He drops his head to your shoulder. You hold him even tighter — you pull him in even closer. Your fingers run through the short strands of his hair and he kisses the exposed skin of your shoulder in silent appreciation.

His mother watches the two of you from beyond the window. There’s a strange warmth that settles into her ache.

You were good. You were so good. Maybe even too good.

Too good for this family. Too pure for their hurt.

He tells you he just needs a minute more, gesturing towards the cigarettes, and you nod as you stand. He kisses your hand before you make your way back up the stairs and you smooth the dark strands out of his face, gently stroking his cheek as he places a stick in between his lips. “Take your time,” you tell him.

His mother waits for you in the living room. There’s a worn out tray on the chabudai before her, and you smile as you take a seat. She exhales as she pours the tea, and you thank her as she sets it down.

“He’s never liked Sencha,” she tells you fondly as she stares at the cup in her hands.

Yes, you want to say. I know that very well.

But you want her to have this part of him — this little known fact that she’d managed to get a hold of. You want her to be a mother. You want her to be his mother.

She traces the lip of the cup and you can’t help but ask her if everything was alright. Her quiet held meaning. Her silence meant questions.

“Why are you with him?” she asks. It’s a blunt question — slightly aggressive in its nature — and you see her children in her.

“I —”

She cuts you off before you’re able to explain.

“He told me that you broke up with him, and rightfully so too.”

You wince a little at the wording.

“But you’re here. You’re here and you’re good to him. Why are you good to him? Why him?”

She tried, she really did try. But she doesn’t understand. She doesn’t get it. She can’t seem to wrap her mind around it at all. You’re a good girl. You seemed like a wonderful woman. So why her son? Why not anyone else? Why not spare yourself the heartache and the trouble?

She doesn’t understand why you’re here instead.

Ran stands in the darkness of the hallway as he listens in. The cigarette pack is crushed beneath his grip and he regrets not making more noise when coming in.

This was not good.

This was not good at all.

He tilts his head up towards the ceiling and curses his mother’s inability to feign ignorance.

He could leave.

He could walk out and wait till the conversation was over and the two of you had moved on before he came back inside. But there’s a vile part of him that wants to hear your truth. There’s a sick part of him that wants you to make him hurt. Why were you with him? Why were you here at all?

You hum as your gaze drifts to the photos she had lined up near the tv. There’s a picture of the two boys outside. Their grins are wide and their hair a brilliant blonde. You smile softly because you know he despises his natural hair color. You know he hates it because of his father. And you know that Rindou had been too young to remember anything of the man. But Ran knew enough to detest him. He knew enough to never go back to blonde. You look at another photo, and you think he must be in his twenties. Rindou’s smile is the only one to be seen. Ran mirrors his mother — in stance and appearance. You think they must’ve argued before the photo was taken. And you wonder if he’d kept his hair long and dark to spite her — as if to say “Look at me. I’m everything you hate. Look at me. I look just like you.” He wanted her to look at him and wince. He wanted her to see herself in him. He was everything she failed at. He was everything she couldn’t control.

He’s beautiful, despite his pettiness, and you look back at her.

Why are you with him? You smile at the loaded question.

“Because I love him,” you tell her as much, and your chest blooms. It aches because you do — you love him. You love him. And sometimes you don’t know what to do with it all. Sometimes, you don’t know where you’re supposed to keep it — all this love; all these feelings. But you don’t think that’s what this is about.

You don’t think that this is what she’s asking about at all.

You tell her she’d done well. You tell her that both of her boys were good men — that they were respected and revered and admired in their work. But then you tell her that if she kept holding on to the past — if she kept holding on to his past — then she’d only destroy them even further. Her eyes widen and you’re worried you might’ve crossed a line, but you keep going. You keep going because it’s not fair to him. You keep going because it isn’t fair to her.

“He’s riddled with guilt,” you say quietly. “It’s not his fault,” you say again. “It’s not.”

“Then whose is it?” She challenges. “Who is responsible?”

“I don’t know,” you respond. “But he’s not thirteen anymore. He’s not fifteen. He’s not twenty.”

She can’t help the slight sheen that covers her eyes — at all the time that she’d missed; at all that she’d desperately clung to. She’d been selfish in her approach. And she knows that it’s not her fault that she was alone. She knows it’s not her fault that she was always tired and away for work. But somewhere along the line, she’d forgotten that he’d had to bear the burden of raising himself and his brother — and that he’d done the best that any child could do. She looks away from you and she thinks he must’ve been scared. She looks away and she thinks he must be tired too.

She holds her breath and you think she’s just like him in that regard — that they were both the type to shoulder their hurt and smile, as if everything was okay — as if the sharpness in their eyes didn’t dull and they weren’t affected by everything around them.

You can only imagine how isolated she must feel. You can only wonder how lonely it must be.

Her gaze drifts back to your belly and you know she’s holding herself back. You know she wants to touch the baby — that she wants to seek comfort in a grandchild she’d only come to know about. It’s a lot to process. It’s a lot to take in. You silently ask her for permission as you reach for her thin fingers — placing her palm onto your stomach. To know that your oldest child had their own on the way and to realize that you had no place in any of it at all — it’s a damning feeling. And maybe she’d been a shit mother. Maybe she hadn’t done all that she should have. But she can’t help but wonder if it was too late. Would he let her be his mother? Would he let her be a grandmother? Was this all she’d come to know of the child?

She’s lost in her own thoughts when your brows furrow, and you wince when your baby kicks against her palm.

The woman before you starts to cry.

It’s quiet, the steadiness in which her tears stream down her face. They follow a common path – down the hollow of her eyes, down to the curved line of her mouth — down, down, down they go.

“Forgive me,” she goes to say. You brush her apology off with a tired smile.

“She’s excited to meet her grandmother.”

She blinks at you again – at your choice of words and the necessity of their timing – and she shakes her head at the irony.

She laughs for the first time all night, and she decides that she doesn’t want you to see her cry anymore.

The two of you sit together in the living room — your eyes fixed onto the tv and the late night game show.

Your lover makes his way back into the living room, looking away as he sits beside you. He pretends he didn’t hear a single word. He pretends he didn’t hear anything at all.

He pours himself a cup of Sencha, wincing at the flavor.

His mother chuckles at the sight.

Her hand doesn’t leave your belly.

He takes you back to his place that night. You don’t object as you nod off in the car. You’re tired. You wonder if it’s always been like this for him — if he’s always felt at war in the very place he was supposed to belong. He reaches for your palm, fiddling with the emptiness of your ring finger as the red light washes over your figure. Your gaze is haunting and he falls in love with you all over — again and again, his heart falls victim to you. Again and again, he’s certain of his love for you.

The two of you don’t talk about tonight.

Not yet at least. Not right now.

You lean into his side on the way up to his penthouse. He wraps an arm around your waist and strokes your jaw.

Still, you don’t say much. Still, you don’t say anything about it at all.

You’d resorted to sleeping in the guest bedroom after the two of you had initially split. On days that you’d had early appointments — on nights that you’d felt sick and alone — he’d preferred that you stay with him. You didn’t mind at all. His presence was comforting — safe and reassuring.

He’d played along with the front you’d put up at first. He’d let you shut the door and pretend to sleep on your own for a day or two. It didn’t take long for him to find his way back to your side. It didn’t take long for you to fall asleep in his arms while he drooled into the pillow overhead and you clutched his shirt tight.

But this time, when he unlocks the door and you make your way over to the guest bedroom, all he does is kiss your forehead in passing. All he does is stroke your cheek in goodbye. He doesn’t tease you at the entry way. He doesn’t fake a scene or hold you tight.

“Goodnight, sweetheart,” is all he says.

You watch as he heads to his bedroom instead — you feel lonelier than you’d felt the first night you’d slept alone.

And he knew you deserved better. He knew he didn’t think this through. He knew that this was too much — that this was all too much for the both of you. And he knew that any excess stress right now wouldn’t be good for you at all.

But his head hurt, and his chest ached, and his shoulders were strained under the weight of all his burdens.

You stare at him in concern, eyes filled with worry and hurt — and you want him back.

You want your lover back.

You sit in the guest bedroom after you’d washed and changed and you eye the clock in a daze. You think an hour passes. Maybe more.

Your daughter kicks impatiently and you exhale at the pressure, rubbing at the spot as though to comfort her.

“Yes, I know,” you tell her. “I know, baby.” I know.

You don’t bother knocking on his door as you make your way into the master bedroom. It’s dark, save for the twinkling lights of the city below. He’s sitting on the edge of the bed, his back facing the door as he hunches over — his hands covering his face. Slowly, you climb onto your side of the bed. Your palms smooth over the untouched blankets and you eye your pillow on his side of the bed.

It’s been a while since you've slept here. It’s been a while since you’ve (more or less) split.

You sit on your knees directly behind him and you grip the sheets beside you as you let your forehead fall onto his back.

“Ran?” you whisper.

His muscles tense, but he doesn’t respond to you otherwise.

“Baby,” you say.

“Come back,” you nearly beg.

You trail a finger down his spine — finger smoothing over every ridge; heart aching with every touch.

He turns to you then, slightly, as he peers over his shoulder.

Your eyes are wide and hopeful, and he shakes his head at the sight.

“No good for you. I’m no good.”

“Yes, you are.”

There’s a slight tremble to his shoulders and you press your cheek to his back as you lean against him.

You wrap one arm around his waist, stroking the skin of his side. It’s too much. His heart can only take so much.

“It’s okay,” you mutter, lips moving against his back. It’s not your fault. It’s not. You did good. You did well. You’re a good man, you tell him. And I love you, you say against him.

He stills.

You say it again.

“I love you.”

He looks down at his palm — at the small ring settled down in the center. It sparkles in the dark and he closes his fist against it at the sight.

“Marry me then,” he says — as though it’s a challenge — as though he’s given up on any chance of you saying yes.

“Okay,” you whisper.

His brows furrow in confusion. He’s not sure he heard you right. He doesn’t know if you understand.

He turns to you immediately. Adoration lines his eyes as he stares at you and his gaze darkens as his nerves are shot with fear.

“What?”

Don’t play with me, his gaze seemed to say. Don’t mess with me right now. Not you. Please not you.

Your hand strokes the soft stubble on his cheek and you smile. It’s tired and loving, genuine and you.

“Ask me again,” you say as he stares. He’s quick to oblige — quick to fulfill your request.

He’s scared you’re going to fade away. He’s scared you might still leave.

“Marry me,” he pleads. “Marry me. Please.”

You think he’s dizzy from all that he’s feeling. You think he’s high off of everything that’s happened. But you know his heart and you know yours, and you know there’s only so much he can take. You know there’s only so much hurt he can handle.

And he loves you. He loves you. He adores you.

“Yes,” you whisper, and you try not to cry as he slips the ring onto your finger.

“Yeah?” he mutters, eyes hazy as he stares into your own.

“Yes,” you say again. “Yes.”

He kisses you then, with need and want.

He kisses you like you’re the love of his life.

He kisses you like you’re the mother of his child.

He kisses you like he wants to marry you — like he fully intends on doing so too.

It’s been eight months too long, but you lay beside him on your side of the bed, and he smiles down at you in love and need.

He kisses you once more as you whine for sleep, and he smiles against your lips at the complaint. Just one more, he says. Just one more, I promise. You push at his face and he laughs at your insistence. You feel your daughter move soon after, and you reach for his wrist, placing your palm on top of his as you guide him to her. As you always would. As you always will.

The two of you would enter parenthood soon — a marriage would follow soon after. You’re both a little scared. You’re both a little terrified. And you know he can’t help but think of all the ways it could go wrong. You know he’s afraid he’ll be the one to screw it all up — quick to take the blame; quick to deny himself the benefit of the doubt.

But you fit your hand in his and you hold on tight.

You trust him, and he trusts you.

You love him, and he loves you.
