It was Regulus’s voice that jolted Sirius from his haze. Lately, he’d taken to just staring off into the distance, the bleariness caused by the spliff in his hand just enough to dull the horrible throbbing that was now constant in his chest. Because he would never, never feel better about this.

“Yeah,” he croaked, not bothering to look back at his brother. “Just as bad as mum, huh?”

It had always been his worst fear. That he was, deep down, his mother. That he was capable of that type of venom and selfish hurt.

But Regulus, to his surprise, didn’t agree with him. Instead, he snorted and said, “No, Sirius.”

An ounce of relief peaked out being all the pain. Perhaps he would get through this, somehow, if his brother still believed him to be a good person. Until Regulus continued.

“You’re worse. Because you love him. Just as much as he loved you. And you still did that. Walburga never loved us,” Regulus said, head high, disgust in his voice.

Those words were the ones that caused Sirius to break completely.
