My mother loved three things: God, her Bible, and my father, precisely in that order.

I didn’t fit into her plans or her heart, which was devoted to serving the Lord.

She dragged us to church every Sunday and Wednesday and also to every service in between.

My knees were always bruised from kneeling on hard wooden pews that folded for use.

She prayed for my soul until the day that she died, like I was her penance.

I never did find out what the sin she committed was, but I still have her Bible.
