idk if youre still into scp but a post of yours said to ask you about Alagadda so...ima do that. the only things pertaining to The Hanged King and Alagadda I've read so far are SCP-2264 and SCP-701, so just like the basic stuff, so im kind of overwhelmed by the amount of lore they apparently have. Why is The Hanged King so feared? I thought he can only pop up if you perform his play??? What are your personal favorite articles about Alagadda/The Hanged King?

I am! And I am always open to talk about Alagadda, it’s really fun (to me).

First off, it’s a bit of a misconception that the Hanged King himself shows up during the performance of the play. It’s actually the ambassador who does so. Throughout works focusing on the realm, it’s made abundantly clear that said Ambassador is a hateful, destructive entity that even residents fear. It’s able to compel people to kill and hurt themselves, all for its amusement. In another SCP, the Ambassador arrives only to murder runaway Alagaddans who tried to integrate into the regular world as Venetian themed rock performers. There’s a big theme throughout Alagaddan works that seem to emphasize how natives are all prisoners, caught in a pitcher plant realm and unable to thrive outside of the whims of their superiors.

When it comes to the Hanged King himself, a lot of the unease people tend to have is how disturbing the visuals are regarding him. The name itself is disturbing, and the imagery of a king of a paradise being a ‘god-shaped hole’ that forces you to reconcile with your own lack of importance is. Well, it’s not fun to think about. As for why the Hanged King is forever forced to suffer, it depends on what SCP or article you read. A lot of the time, it’s viewed as a sort of curse. One myth on the site claims the blood of all Alagaddans was drained in order to bring the king back to life, but he accidentally squandered it. In another piece, it’s explicitly said that the Ambassador is not the Hanged King’s… well, ambassador, but more so his jailor and tormentor. This is an interpretation by a character whose mind is breaking by then though, so who knows if he’s right.

As for my personal favorites? I enjoy SCP-2264 of course, but also A Wandsman in the Court of the Hanged King, SCP-2732, and SCP-6624 (content warnings aside) because it develops another Lord that people don’t really think about.

All in all, I really love Alagadda because it’s fundamentally a world that captivates me and that I use a lot in my personal SCP fiction.
