How you DM is as unique as how you paint or how you write. No two DMs are alike, and that’s as it should be.

Delicate art, delicate arguments...

A Marvel colorist reflects on the subtle racism of shifting skin tones.

Ron Wimberly is an incredible artist and this comic really spoke to me (no joke, I’m still crying as I write this). I’m leaving it as a link to the website it’s posted on because the website works to display the comic accurately both on a computer and on mobile, and the layout of this comic is a big part of it’s impact. You should read this.

LANCER (ENG -> ITA)

#31daycharacterchallenge

Today's game is Lancer, a mecha rpg I heard good things about and discovered were all true when a friend introduced me to it. They also made an app to manage characters, mechs and NPCs that lets you print the character sheet as well, as you can see below. The game's narrative and tactical sides are distinct, and the latter is much crunchier, where talent and gear choices deeply impact tactics and gameplay. The setting is detailed and rich with hooks and tensions to exploit and throw at the Lancers, the elite pilots you play as in this game.

Nadiyah Bobe is a young woman born in a fringe space station, where people need to be resourceful and creative to keep things working. With a knack for reactors, generators and energy management in general, Nadiyah started pretty soon to customise and built her own gizmos. She enlisted with the local militia mostly to gain access to the latest tech, but proved exceptional enough to earn a place among the Lancers, taking up the callsign Vetala, and souping up her Everest frame into a moving artillery platform.

Oscar Gunmetal, Vetala's frame, is heavily armed, built for engaging at medium-long distance with a sequence of barrages, taking advantage of its turret drones not just for fire support, but also for sensor feedback, giving her an edge when scanning her surroundings. Nadiyah also mounted an energy weapon of her own design to supplement the standard weaponry she has access to.

HELLBOY ~ THE FURY Cover Art by Francesco Francavilla

Exactly 20 years ago (the character first appeared in San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 - Aug. 1993) Mike Mignola introduced the Big Red to the world: HELLBOY was born!

To celebrate, I am gonna do a HellBoy themed week here on the blog.

TO start, my variant cover for HELLBOY THE FURY #1 (the mini written by Mignola and illustrated by Duncan Fegredo) that Mike kindly asked me to draw. Being a variant, I was allowed quite some freedom in playing with logo and cover dress. I wanted to give it the classic paperback cover feel, hence the little headshot in the circle. I also came up with the top-left badge/logo right arm of Doom thing, which appears on all 4 covers I did for Mike (will get to that later). Also included here are the two layouts, and you can see the final art/cover was a mix of the elements from those two concepts.

Hope you enjoyed it.

Happy Birthday, HellBoy! :)

Cheers, FF

OPERA HOUSE (ENG -> ITA)

#31daycharacterchallenge

Having acted with local theatre groups, Opera House struck a chord with me, and I find it really captures the magic of the stage. The setting alone is so rich, dynamic and lively that any game can benefit from all that, but a few mechanics and approaches like "real-time play" are interesting takes on ways to play it. The characters are mostly behind the scene workers of a great theatre, the few unlucky souls who didn't read the fine print in the side job description for a little extra dough, pitting them against curses, ghosts, saboteurs and creatures from Below while trying to keep up with their work, that's already hard by itself.

Meet Jules Germaine, a young, talkative flyman at the Royal Grand whose honesty and fast reflexes help him on the job and to get along with the rest of the crew, but he's still a bit naïve, otherwise he probably wouldn't have ended up in this situation. Being a flyman, he's also close enough to the stage crew and security staff, sharing their spaces enough that they rubbed off on him. He's a bit of a geek as well, and, used to oversee things from his perch, has gotten the hang of stage management as well. He's rarely seen without his spiced coffee thermos, that he quietly sips when he needs to calm his nerves.
