Medic: What?

Cheavy: Oh? That certainly got a reaction. Did I finally find a nerve?

Medic: …

Cheavy: Well, you'll be happy to know that him and the rest of your former teammates are in the area. No doubt the little pissant thinks he's going to charge in here and save you. The fool.

Medic: …

Cheavy: *laughs maniacally* I could just let my team handle him, but I think I’d rather enjoy taking him out myself. Heh, I can hardly even imagine the satisfaction of seeing that glimmer of hope die in his eyes! It should be quite the show.

Medic: ...

Cheavy: *sneering* Don't you think, Frankenstein?!

Medic: *quietly* I think if you touch a single hair on his head, I'm going to be wearing your guts like my late mother's pashmina.

Cheavy: …Excuse me?

Medic: Oh, I'm sorry. Did I fucking stutter?

Medic: *glares at Cheavy, the fires of Hell burning in his eyes* I said if you hurt him, you will experience pain and torment beyond anything you could possibly imagine. Your body will be torn apart, piece by piece, as you beg for a mercy that will never come. I will add your screams to my goddamn Spotify, and I will see your head mounted on a fucking pike!!!

Cheavy: *trying and failing to keep his composure* Y-You should hear how ridiculous you sound right now. T-Trying to threaten me from behind bars...

Heavy & Medic relaxing after a hard day’s work. Heavy’s tired and Medic’s drunk.

Well, um, yes. I mean who doesn’t love the chemistry between these two, I mean, look at them! Well done, Valve, you win ><

Medic did more than just pinch his cheek and call him a baby.

I’m just gonna get right to the point. My big shippy-ass point.

The first two pictures are of Medic as he prepares to heal Demoman and Scout. He’s grinning maniacally and starts grinning maniacally before he even turns on his medigun for both instances.

But for Heavy, there is only serenity. When he already would have started beaming madly while tending to anyone else, he only gazes calmly at Heavy. He goes through the motions, but ubercharges Heavy, and stands amazed in the background as it takes effect. When it’s on, he goes through a sequence of expressions that progress from joy to drunk with power. In the final picture, as he and Heavy climb the mountain of corpses, he is still staring at Heavy. His eyes never leave him and never left him in the previous frames.

I would attribute this solely to the thrill of experiencing the power of his new creation, but Medic’s body language and mannerisms throughout the hospital scene previously suggest more. There’s a lot of unnecessary touching and physical interaction that was present, and not because of any necessity to place Medic in certain ways so that a shot could be framed or the tasks that he was performing could be carried out in a natural way or properly framed shot. Those actions were there because they were meant to suggest at Medic’s character and develop our perceptions of his personality and opinions towards other characters (as all animated characters’ body language is meant to do). Consider also that Medic doesn’t come from a culture that’s notoriously keen on intimate physical contact and smaller zones of personal space, and so the fact that he violates this needlessly on an excessive basis during his scene with Heavy gains even more meaning. It all shows a level of closeness and physicality that, whether onesided or not, is certainly still plainly present for that period of time.

So I’m going to say that the inner reasons for Medic’s elated expressions during the ubercharge scene are probably an intense even mixture of mad joy for his properly working experiment, an eye for the beauty of a genuine innovation, and a deep admiration for the man, the vessel, upon which its possibility was predicated.

Medic is so fucking head over heels for Heavy I cannot even begin to explain it to you holy crap

Like seriously ok just compare Medic’s behavior towards Heavy in Meet the Medic to his behavior towards literally everyone else in Expiration Date and the other shorts. Lots of touching, lots of big smiling, lots of laughing and joking, versus no touching, tight-lipped “I’m going to die” or “here are the facts about tumors” smiles that go away shortly after they happen, and zero laughing and joking save for when he finally gets a little breadmonster to play with (and knows that he’s not actually going to die). And even then, Heavy is the one who pulls him out of a stupor and calls him to action during the fight in the final scene.

I’ll get detailed later because I’ve always meant to analyze Medic’s body language in Meet the Medic and compare it with other appearances but seriously just LOOK.

The way a character moves and expresses themselves in the context of varying environments and situations helps develop the viewer’s understanding of their personality in ways that exposition simply can’t. With animated characters, gestures, body positioning, and expressions can be exaggerated or restrained limitlessly to achieve a limitless range of effects on how we perceive them.
