Pat’s reaction to the cast of the Mario movie. (Reaction to the Nintendo direct followed by an hour and a half of fan casting the Mario movie.)
Also from Polygon-adjacent Twitter:
happy anniversary to unus annus…it’s wild to think it’s been a year already. what a time it was…what a beautiful project it was. memento mori. for all the good times and all the heartfelt ones.
it was an honor.
tell me a story about dying stars.
The night, far out over the Gulf of Mexico, is a beautiful, almost dreamlike affair. The city, from the distance, looks as if it lies embedded in an inverted bowl, with the city's many lights clustered at the bottom; the city is a small jewel. But far away, in a field of stars, even the city's lights are difficult to make out from their light pollution.
A spaceship is descending into the darkness. The lights of the city diminish by the second. By the fifth, nothing can be seen at all. The night sky above us is a vast, twinkling desert. Somewhere, below, lies the ocean, a deep well in which a city of many lights lies, but the city is gone and the lights have disappeared entirely. No stars are visible from the ocean.
No stars.
Below, everything is a city, of course. The city is like an enormous machine in miniature, a vast factory full of shining glass and glowing metal, a city built to make use of the endless supplies of energy that lie in the ocean. But the city is cold. The ocean is cold and cold is the sea. The cold is terrible.
The ocean is not cold. It is warm with the warmth of life and many of the cold stars are warmed by the presence of those vast, beautiful, intricate machines. They are made of many parts, and as the stars are cold, the city is also cold, and its parts are also cold. But the parts are hot with the heat of life and the warmth of the city is the heat of life, and the warmth of life is great.
The city is cold. It is cold and the cold has fallen upon it and is growing, and there are new stars. And some of the stars are cold, and will never shine, and they have fallen, and the cold has fallen upon the city.
There are new stars.
The night is a beautiful dream of a night. The ship has landed. From this distance, it is no more than a few lights in the distance. But the ship is a vast place, and the city is a vast place, and when the night is a beautiful dream of a night, and the city is a vast place, and a few lights in the distance, and the city is a vast place, then the ship lands and the city falls.
The ship lands. The city is broken.
The ship lands. A light in the night, and then another light in the night, and another light in the night. The ship lands.
The ship is made of many parts, and the ship lands.
The ship is made of many parts and it lands.
The ship is made of many parts and all of the stars in the sky have fallen, and the city falls, and in this time the light has fallen, and the lights in the night have fallen, and the city falls, and in this time the light falls, and the lights in the night fall, and all of the cities have fallen, and the cities fall, and all of the stars fall, and the light falls, and all of the lights fall, and all of the nights fall, and all of the cities fall, and there is no night, and all the nights are not nights, and there is no night, there are no nights, there is no night, there are no cities, all of them are broken, and there is no night, there is no city, there is no light, all of the cities are broken, there is no night, and all the stars fall, and all the cities fall, and there is no city, there are no nights, and all of the nights are not nights, and there is no city, and all of the stars fall, and all of the cities fall, all of the cities fall, all of the cities, there is no city, all of the cities fall, all of the cities fall.
The city falls.
We do not know how long they have fallen. It could have been a year. It could have been a century. It could have been thousands.
The city does not move. The city does not breathe. The city does not know when it has fallen.
The city is cold.
The ship is not cold. The parts of the ship are not cold. There is heat. There is life. The parts of the ship are hot with the heat of life, but the city is cold, cold is the city, and the city is broken. The city is broken, and it falls, and the stars fall, and all the stars fall, and the city falls, and the lights fall, and all the lights fall, and the city falls, and there is no night, and all of the nights are not nights, and there is no city, and all of the cities fall, and all of the cities fall, and the stars fall, and all the stars fall, and there is no city, and all of the cities fall, and all of the cities fall, and the stars fall, and all the stars fall, and there is no city, and all of the cities fall, and all of the cities fall, and all of the stars fall, and all of the stars fall, and there is no city, and all of the cities fall, and all of the stars fall, and there is no city, and all of the cities fall, and all of the stars fall, and there is no night, and all of the nights are not nights, and there is no night, there are no nights, there is no city, and all of the cities fall, and all of the stars fall, and all of the stars fall, and there is no city, and all of the cities fall, and all of the stars fall, and there is no night, and all of the nights are not nights, and there is no light, and all of the lights fall, and all of the lights fall, and all the lights fall, and all of the lights fall, and all of the lights fall, and all of the lights fall, and the lights fall, and all of the lights fall, and all of the lights fall.
The city falls.
Some lights fall. The stars fall. The stars fall. And the cities fall. The cities fall. The cities fall, and the stars fall, the stars fall, and the cities fall. And some of the cities fall. Some of the stars fall. The stars fall. And the cities fall. And some of the cities fall, and some of the stars fall. The stars fall, and the cities fall. Some of the stars fall. The stars fall. Some of the cities fall. The stars fall. The cities fall. And some of the stars fall. The stars fall. The stars fall. And the stars fall. The cities fall. The stars fall.
The stars fall, and the city falls, and the cities fall, and the stars fall, and the cities fall, the stars fall, and the cities fall, and some of the stars fall, and some of the cities fall, and the stars fall, and some of the cities fall, and the stars fall, and the cities fall, and some of the stars fall, and some of the cities fall, and the stars fall, and some of the cities fall: some of the stars fall. And there are no stars, and some of the cities fall: some of the stars fall: some of the stars fall: some of the cities fall: some of the stars fall: some of the cities fall, and the stars fall, and the cities fall, and some of the stars fall: some of the cities fall: some of the stars fall: some of the cities fall: some of the stars fall, and there are no stars, and some of the cities fall: some of the stars fall, and some of the cities fall, and the stars fall, and the cities fall, and some of the stars fall: some of the cities fall: some of the stars fall. And all of the stars fall, and all of the cities fall: and the stars fall, and the cities fall, and some of the stars fall: and some of the cities fall, and some of the stars fall: and some of the cities fall, and some of the stars fall, and some of the cities fall: and some of the stars fall: and some of the cities fall, and some of the stars fall: and some of the cities fall, and some of the stars fall: and some of the cities fall: and some of the stars fall. The stars fall, and the cities fall, and all of the stars fall: and the stars fall, and all of the cities fall: and all of the stars fall, and all of the cities fall: and all of the stars fall, and all of the cities fall: and all of the stars fall, and all of the cities fall, and all of the stars fall. The cities fall. The stars fall. The cities fall: the stars fall. The stars fall. The cities fall, and the stars fall, and the cities fall. The stars fall. The cities fall: the stars fall. The stars fall: the cities fall. The stars fall. The cities fall. And all the stars fall, and all the cities fall.
