I can't say that this will be the color scheme I'll use for the comic, but I was curious to see how it'd turn out.
"Against you I will fling myself, unvanquished and unyielding, O Death!" ~Virginia Woolf
I’m working tonight, New Year’s Eve, so I won’t be participating in any celebrations, but in seeing so many others pondering the events of this last year, and after catching sight of my own resolutions from the start of 2019, I thought I might wax introspective.
I think for a couple of years now I’ve been promising myself I’d approach an agent with pitches for publication, and each year some things, both wonderful and terrible, arrive to disrupt this goal. But I feel like this year might be the one where I succeed. I’ve been tinkering with query letters for some new and old pieces over the past several months. Wish me luck with that, I guess.
I read. I read and reread. I will have read 71 books this year- mix of graphic novels, prose work, and audiobooks (yes, these count) throughout the year- not counting the numerous children’s books I have read to my child as they grew from newborn to toddler in 2019.
I only managed to publish one comic this year, and that a reexamination of an older piece, but I have several in the cue for digital publication hopefully in the New Year.
And a hundred other things started and not finished- tweaks to websites, stepping up my social media presence, a shed sitting partially complete in the winter snow, a garden I’d like to do better with in the coming seasons...
But I held my child this year, and made as much time as was possible to be with family and friends. I kept these promises to myself because I know how important these things are- and how brief. I will keep this promise again in the New Year.
So here it is, my tender resolutions, my failures, my successes. This is humanity. This is small steps, leading up into the light. I wish you all peace and joy and successes of your own, however small, in the coming year.
This panel was more of a struggle than it had any right to be. That said, this is often a problem for me where a large number of new characters are entering a scene.
Finally succeeded in completing the drawing for this last set of panels...
