For me the reason RTD companions are so good is that you could take the doctor totally out of their lives and you can still easily imagine a drama or a soap or a comedy or SOMETHING about them and their families. They're so grounded, the doctor really is just an addition to their lives. If she never met the doctor, you can still imagine Rose, Jackie and Mickey in another story. Same goes for the Joneses and the Nobles/Motts. They could all be families in character driven TV shows with no doctor and no Sci Fi element.
