Visions Through Orpiment Eyes
Chapter 1: Manslaughter Monday
Fawn
âFawn! Are you up yet?â It was father speaking. He was yelling from the front of the house. I could smell what he was baking from my bed yet I refused to pull myself out of bed. I groaned as he yelled again and made my way out my bed and into the kitchen. It was a quaint home of about three rooms, but it worked for our family just fine. We lived out in the forest, hunting, gathering, foraging and keeping trash and humans out. Unlike most of our kind, we lived mostly by our lonesome, in a large tree far away from the nearest town.
I made my way into the kitchen to see my dad. He stood over the stove which was a contraption made of a metal frame with a piece of cast iron over it. We used it as a sort of giant skillet.
He was making meat patties out of a squirrel we had killed the other day. With the squirrel, he cooked fresh greens in animal fat, seasoned with some sort of spice mix (said spice mix of which he still wouldn't tell me). The plan for today was to go foraging. It was a pretty daily occurrence by now, and Dad had been educating me on the different types of plants, mushrooms, and wildlife. I closed the round front door behind me with a thump and hurried to catch up with Father.
âWhat will we look for today?â
âHow about⌠something new?â
I grinned, today would be a good one.
Jasper
I woke up on the forest floor with a piercing headache. It was as if my head was on blast from the pounding of my pulse inside my brain. I yelped as a sharp pain made itself clear in my back. There must have been an open wound because the upper back of my shirt was soaked in blood.
âWell shitâŚâ
âThis is great.â I sighed, tensely trying to tap the wound on my back to examine the damage. I winced, trying to move my arm, but I couldn't manage to touch the center of the wound the way it was placed. I was able to reach around the edges, but it spread downward where I could not reach.
This will be a pain to clean.
I looked around at my surroundings, which slightly spun as I got up. I seemed to be lost in a âregularâ forest, mossy bottom and leaf litter, full of grown and dead trees. Even through my blurred vision I could see green lichen on the bark of nearby trees. I could hear birds that cawed from somewhere in the trees, most likely unhappy at my presence. I sighed and started to make my way through the forest, almost tripping over my own feet anytime I went over a loose branch.
âŚ
I had been walking a while, for how long, I didnât know. As I was walkingâwell, more stumblingâ down a battered path, when I felt something small, pierce into my lower calf. It somehow managed to get through my pants and into my skinâ not by much, but enough for me to notice. Even in my half-conscious state I realized,
Oh. That's not good.
Hoping that it wasn't a snake that had bitten me, I looked down. I didnât see anything at first, as my vision was still in a hazeâ and on top of that, the ground was covered in leaf litter, grass, moss, and rock.
Then I saw what I thought to be-
a tiny humanoid creature?
Most of its features were still unclear to me, besides one thing- a blazingly angry glare, and a bow aimed right at me. âWhat- who⌠are?â my words were failing me, my vision tunneling in and out. The creature said something to me that I couldnât make out, and I slumped to the ground next to a tree, losing consciousness for the second time.
Fawn
We had only made it a short-ways away from home when Father and I heard the sound of heavy, and very unsteady, footfalls.
Most animals didnât move in such⌠uncoordinated paths. Yet, humans never came this far into the forest either.
âThatâsâŚ. An odd sound,â Father noted, looking back at me with curiosity. The two of us would often get into some trouble exploring, but weâd always made it out safe, somehow. This property was what managed to quell any nerves I had about our outings. We both stalked towards a large tree for cover.
âStay here for a moment while I go check this thing out,â he whispered to me. The creature shouldâve been pretty close by now; its footfalls could be easily felt through the ground. Although I had lived in the forest my whole life, with creatures of any and all sizes, I had never encountered anything bigger than a deer (bears were a never-to-be-messed-with kind of being). I was trying not to show my fear to Father, but I couldn't help my pulse beat ever faster as I felt the vibration of its footfalls became more intense the closer it got.
I did not hear much for a couple minutes, besides the echoes of footfalls and crunching leaves.
Then I heard a small yelp, and a crunch that didnât sound like a leaf.
Similar to a piece of fruit falling from a tree and squelching as it hit the ground.
It sounded like flesh.
I started shaking, fearing the worst.
Did it eat him? I tried to reason with myself. If it ate him, it would have made some other noise: growling, hissing⌠something⌠right? I could hear its footfalls slowly making their way forward, like nothing had happened. No change in its odd rhythmâŚ
No change in rhythm, It couldn't have hurt him then, right? He would have yelled for help by now if soâŚ
I gathered as much courage as I could to walk around the tree. With my heart racing so quickly I thought it might run away from me.
I managed to round the knob of roots.
I saw the creature.
Then I saw blood on the ground.
I could see pieces of flesh, blood, and clothes. They had been engraved into the ground. Smothered into the dirt, I could see my fatherâs tool belt.
No.
I had seen dead animals before. Death did not scare me.
At least, that is what I would tell myself.
No.
But this.
This was different.
NO.
I felt lightheaded, my ears rang.
It all felt so unreal.
How could this happen?
This isnât real, I'm just, iâm just- just- dreaming.
Father could get out of anything. Any animal of the forest, they listened to him, in their own way. This was something only a human could do. I looked back at the human slowly trudging its way through the forest. It was larger and⌠slower than I had expected. It lumbered unevenly, It did not even look stable on its own oversized legs.
My ears still ringing, and the human not far away, I pulled out my bow. My ears pounded as I did the stupidest thing possible.
I shot at it. It wasn't as if the tiny arrow would have done much to it, but it got the giantâs attention. It had been stumbling forward, and it stopped for a moment.
I could see the blood splatter on the bottom of its boot.
NO. Thatâs not real. It canât be.
Was it⌠purposeful? I had heard mixed stories from Father. Never interact with them if possible, as most had this internal driving malice. A hatred for the forest and its residents. But despite that he also seemed to hold a tinge of curiosity. The odd things we found in the forest, left over by the humans, had always seemed⌠interesting. Pieces of a world that we would never see. Maybe it was simply morbid curiosity but,
that interest was lost on me now, what possible good could come from this- this monster. My head was still pounding, partly from terror, partly from anger.
The human was just staring at me. Its eyes looked out of focus, glazed and unsure what to look at.
For some reason, this just pissed me off more.
I screamed at it at the top of my lungs. I donât even know what I was trying to say. My eyes were burning with hot tears. It looked confused, and still dazed. I knew it was stupid to yell at a human, I knew I would be snatched up and have my bones crushed like fall leaves. I was ready to deal with the consequences as its gargantuan form slumped forward. Instead of grabbing me It seemed to let itself slip downward to the ground, using a nearby tree to assist. Only then did some of the shock wear off to realize how much danger I was in. But also- just how pale this human was. It looked clammy and had blood seeping down its back. Even with its back against the tree I could still see blood on its shirt on the shoulder and side.
It had barely noticed me. If it could simply crush a person without noticing, then what would it do to something it did notice? I was still holding my bow up to the human as its eyes slowly closed and it slumped forward. I let out a shaky breath and lowered my bow. How could this all happen? It was too quick, too fast for me to contemplate. My father, the only person I had known for my entire life, was dead. What was I supposed to do? I knew I needed protection quickly. The only reason the animals of the forest didnât eat us was because he had the skills to dissuade them, to forage, hunt, etcâŚ
But me? I was still in training.
Whether I liked it or not, I needed something to keep the other animals from helping themselves to a quick snack of me.

mor 008 and jaz

orion and the girly pop jaz again- why? because they are my main gt characters rn lol.
sooo I didn't feel like making a background but imagine an alien city there. Orion is most definitely NOT from this planet, he also doesn't mean any harm besides the fact he's about 70-80 ft tall and has fully plated armor on covered in sigils that even orion doesn't know what they are. I'm not really sure how to set up how they meet but its probably gonna be in a forest because I am biased and I love a good on ominous giant lurking through the forest. *He fell, can't remember wtf is going on and is trying to find out where he is, meanwhile, jaz is just minding her business and hears some creature stomping thru the forest*
do they speak the same language? yes
does that make any sense? no
