the two of you met at school, becoming friends instantly

both of you were good at academics, and would open up to each other once in a while

the two of you would do your own therapy lessons and give each other advice once every week

so when the two of you went back to his house, you politely took off your shoes and greeted his brothers

he invited you to his room to hang out and have your emotional talk of the week and go study

“so… some crazy shit happened and i feel bad about it, but can i tell you…?” you asked

he nodded and sat down on his bed right next to you

you told him about how a close friend ran away, your only good male friend that didn’t treat you like shit

he apologized for it, and you almost started crying

he rubbed your back and said, “you know it’s not your fault though, right? maybe he had some stuff going on..”

you sniffled and tears rolled down your face, you and ponyboys knees and sides next to each other

he told you to lay down so you could rest, and you pulled him down with you, cuddling up into him

he knew you always wanted to be close since it was just a safety thing, you felt loved when you were with someone physically

so he wrapped his arm around you, making you feel protected

you fell asleep and started to breathe normally, ponyboy planned to rest his eyes, but ended up sleeping too

JOHNNY CADE

you and johnny have been friends for a while, the two of you relating because of many things happening at home

your parents didn’t care about you, as johnnys parents didn’t care about him

the only thing they cared about was drinking, however, you and johnny tried as hard as you could to not get into that habit

johnny didn’t go to school much, but you had to

you didn’t have much friends when you were in school, and the only ones you had weren’t really true friends

when you came to school one day, your friends and everyone else were staring at you, whispering to their friends

then one of your classmates came up to you, telling you “hey, you look confused. this is probably the last thing you wanna hear, but there’s a rumor that you were kind of… having a thing with a teacher…”

your eyes went wide and you stared at your classmate, telling them that’s disgusting and not true, they said they knew but the whole school already didn’t like you

so your friends ignored you for the whole day, and you were walking back to your house, johnny seeing you and calling out your name

you turned your head and saw him running over to you, asking what you were doing and if you had a good day at school

“no..” you mumbled, telling him everything that happened

the two of you sat down on a bench, not wanting to go to your houses

you confessed, “i care too much. i just do, and that’s the problem. i’ll want to be friends with the people who talked behind my back, the ones who created the rumors. they’re two of the only people i have. i just… i want to leave.. sometimes..”

johnny knew how you felt, but he didn’t want to worry you, he couldn’t tell you

he felt the same exact way sometimes, always going back to people who hurt him, something you did too

you put your head on his shoulder and he looked down at you, your eyes closed

you were starting to fall asleep, so he put his head on yours and started to fall asleep too

the two of you needed each other, you understood each other like how no one else did

you were a little younger than ponyboy, and you actually tutored him, even though he was pretty smart

the two of you were friends and grew close, so you would come to his house at least twice weekly

you would see soda and darry, ponyboy’s brothers, and they would offer you food and activities for helping out their brother

soda noticed some things in you that he noticed in himself, you were naturally left out, and ponyboy told him that

you kept to yourself but people assumed you didn’t have problems, but you and soda got into a big conversation once, one about emotions, and you didn’t even remember how you started talking about them

you told him nearly everyone in your life walked out on you, like everyone forgot about your existence and no one cared about you

since you had no friends, people didn’t want to be your friend, thinking there’s probably a reason why you had none

“i-i don’t know, i just get overwhelmed sometimes too… like i gotta prove to everyone that im worthy of their time, even though i know no one will listen to me. i don’t know, it’s probably stupid..” you told soda

“i used to feel that way too, but you gotta make risks, right? try to be someone’s friend, go look for relationships! you aren’t gonna get anywhere if you don’t try, huh?” he gave you a weak smile

“yeah… i guess you’re right. does the feeling go away though? wanting to prove yourself even though no one listens? so maybe even people just know you made an effort?” you asked him

he thought for a moment and nodded, “yeah, it goes away eventually…”

you hugged him tightly and lay down on the couch, your feet on his lap

he put his hand on your calf in a comforting way, staring sadly into the distance, outside the window

he had lied, the feeling didn’t even go away for him, he had that feeling for years, and it was still there

but he didn’t want to worry you, you were just a kid, younger than ponyboy

soda grew to care about you as much as he cared about ponyboy, because he saw a part of himself in you, and felt a need to help you

DARRY CURTIS

he was already used to having to take care of his siblings, so he doesn’t necessarily have a problem with taking care of you

you would sleep at his house a lot, in pony boys room since the two of you were closest in age

but you’d seek out for darry and not anyone else

you preferred to stay within arms length near darry, not feeling protected or safe without him

you really looked up to him, and he knew that, he knew about your troubles at home and how nearly every guy in your life walked out on you

you knew you wanted him to stay and take care of you, but you always had the thought in the back of your mind that he would abandon you

but he knew you needed a male figure in your life, so he decided to help you build boundaries and expectations in life

you weren’t feeling the best, you had a school event where you had to present something in front of the whole school

you were nervous and needed someone to be there, someone to support you

but neither your mom nor dad came to visit you, and darry was busy working, plus you didn’t tell him about the event

so when you went home to the curtis house, you saw darry on the couch

“hey kid, how was school? anything fun happen?” he asked

“um… i don’t know, i had to do a presentation in front of the whole class..” you answered

“really? were your parents there?”

you answered with a ‘no’ and he asked, “why didn’t you tell me about it? i could’ve gone, taken the day off.”

tears started to form in your eyes, you sat next to darry and cuddled into his side, nearly laying down

he rubbed your shoulder in a calming gesture, telling you everything would be okay

you sniffled, tears still dripping down your face, repeating “i’m sorry, i’m sorry..” for no reason at all, and he told you there’s nothing to be sorry for

“thank you..” you mumbled to him, slowly falling asleep on the couch

darry just stared at you, feeling bad for you, believing no child should go through what you have gone through

the two of you actually met at the police station, both of you being arrested for stealing

he managed to get out of the handcuffs because no one was watching him, and you started wandering around, the officers not cuffing you so you could feel a bit in control, you were a kid after all

dally walked over to you, seeing you secretly looking at files, looking for your name

“the fuck are you in here for, kid?” he asked

“i took something from someone, i was gonna give it back but the bitch just called the fucking cops on me. what about you?” you answered

“i stole too. name’s dally, but how old are you?”

you replied with “y/n. i’m 12.” he stared at you for a couple seconds, mouth opening a bit due to shock, and you got called over to be released

the two of you kept running into each other multiple times throughout the next few months, whether it was on the streets or at the police station

the two of you naturally got to know each other, and he thought of you as a little sister to protect

the two of you were talking about feelings, and how you didn’t know how you felt, most of the time you could never tell what you were feeling, and you never knew how to explain it to someone because they wouldn’t understand

except he understood, that was the one thing someone’s said that he’s full on related to

you told him your mom left when you were young, but you never had the words to explain how you felt, and people thought you were a shitty person because of it, which caused you to have no friends

you confessed all of that while you were sitting on a chair in the police station, next to dally

he responded with “it’s okay not to know how you’re feeling. i’m sure you know deep down, you just don’t know how to explain it. that’s fine, you’re not a bad person for it. you’re still figuring things out.” making eye contact with you the whole time, trying to get you to understand

you looked at him the whole time with a look in your eyes that he thought was sad, but knew you wouldn’t know that

you didn’t say anything back, and put your head on his shoulder, closing your eyes and falling asleep

he put his head back to the wall, closing his eyes too, a protective arm around you and falling asleep

TWO-BIT MATTHEWS

he unexpectedly understands emotions very well, no one really expects him to have such a high emotional intelligence since his thing is making jokes and making fun of people

but when you walked his sister home, even though she was very young and you didn’t even know her, he appreciated it

it became routine for you to walk her home to her and two-bit’s house after school, and her brother decided ‘might as well get to know her if she’s keeping my sister safe’

so the two of you became close, and it was like you were his sister too

you started opening up about how you were never that protected in your life, so you wanted to protect those who never had it either

just so they’d feel a little better and feel like people care about them, that person being two-bits sister

she was almost in second grade, used to walk alone after school, feeling unsafe

then you walked her home and continued to do that for years

when you walked her home one day, after you had a bad day at school, two-bit let you and his sister in

you were quieter than usual, so he asked you what was wrong after you took of your shoes and put your backpack on the ground

the sister went to her room, and you told two-bit, “i got jumped at school.”

his eyes went wide and asked, “what? by who, are you okay? i can patch you up if you’re really hurt—“ but you said, “oh, i’m fine keith.. just don’t worry about it, wasn’t that big of a deal…”

he argued with you, saying some people die by getting jumped, and you sat on the couch, sighing

he sat next to you, putting an arm around your shoulder and pulling you closer, mumbling “you need to tell me when things like this happen. want me to beat them up for you?”

you smiled but shook your head, not wanting them to be hurt, because in your head, maybe they had a reason to do it

“you’re an empath at heart, y/n, but it’s gonna get in your way one day.” he told you

you put your head on his side, whispering an “i know..” and falling asleep

he knew you always tried to back up how people felt, that things aren’t their fault and maybe they had a reason for doing what they did, but could never forgive yourself for your own actions and mistakes

you were always the comforter, never the comforted, until you met keith

STEVE RANDLE

the two of you met at the DX, you coming nearly every day at the same time around 3:30pm after school

he started wondering why a kid as young as you would be walking around alone, to the same place every day

he decided to stay at work until you left, making sure no one came in to hurt you

then after you realized one of the workers were always staring at you, the two of you started to talk

he asked “why are you always here? shouldn’t you be at home or something..” and you responded with “i don’t like going home. my parents are mean, they’re hardly even at the house..”

he stared at you, and continued the conversation, telling you he’d walk you home when you’d be ready

this continued for the next couple months, the two of you growing close and him becoming like a brother to you

once, you knocked on the door of his house, your face red and puffy with tear marks on your face

“…can i stay here for tonight?” you asked quietly, and he responded with a nod and welcomed you in

he already had a bed set up for you since you would sleep over sometimes

he sat on his bed and asked “so, you gonna tell me what happened or not..?” eyebrows going upwards

you responded with, “so you know how my dad went into the military a few months ago, right?” and he nodded

“well, he died.”

silence, steve looked at you, and he knew there was pain in your eyes

your father never payed attention to you anyways, and you didn’t know why you were sad

you were close to breaking down again, so you ran into his chest, giving him a hug in the process

he hugged you back, picking you up onto the bed to keep hugging you, knowing you needed comfort

at some point, you were knocked out, already snoring

he knew you had a ton of shit going on, but didn’t understand why you missed your dad even though he never cared for you

but you were young, and needed someone to look up to, so he decided to take on that role and teach you many things and life lessons

he didn’t even know he knew everything he taught you, he just said whatever was on his mind

you thought he was cute so you struck up a conversation with him

you two kept talking for months and you eventually went to his house to study and met his brothers, darry and soda

darry told pony to be wary of you, but was glad to have you around since you would help ponyboy get his grades up if they faltered

you also gave him a reason to go to track meets and try since you would be competing too

soda thought you were nice and that’s all he cared about, you respected and seemed to love his brother even if pony couldn’t see it himself

he realized he started to love himself more when he hung out with you, and you made him look forward to things

he loves the way you laugh, the way you would get excited talking about specific things, your love for baking and the way you would get eating your favorite meal, how pretty you were, your kindness and selflessness, he could go on and on about what he loves about you

he later asked you if you wanted to be his girlfriend and picked your favorite flowers from a field close to his house

you obviously said yes

you were so excited and gave him a big hug, saying you were waiting for him to ask you and you’re so happy he finally did

he loves you so much but feels like he’ll scare you away if he says it quickly

he tells the gang about you being his girlfriend and they freak out, asking if they can meet you

you got nervous when he told you his friends wanted to meet you, and when you did you didn’t know when to talk or not

they could tell you got nervous and dally openly made fun of you for it

you guys had the same humor and since you were respectful and treated them like decent human beings, they liked you a lot more than they expected to

dally won’t tell anyone but he thinks you’re chill, he’s still a little cautious around you though since he’s not used to you

once you leave pony’s house when he’s walking you home, he tells you the gang like you and are fine with you two being together

you met johnny at the drive-in, you were with marcia and cherry while he was with pony and dally

johnny thought you were SOOO beautiful so he told pony and dally, they both thought you’d be a bitch since you were with socs and you were one too

after dally was done harassing cherry and ran off, she started a conversation with pony and johnny

you looked back at johnny and already saw him looking at you, so you smiled

you were more on the quiet side since most of the time you just didn’t have anything to say, and you were an observer

you noticed the cut on his cheek, it was deep and he had a look that made him look scared of everything, so you guessed he had problems at home

he’d flinch at loud noises and sudden movements, so you took a note of that

you were still curious about the cut on his cheek, and asked him where he got it, he looked to pony and he pat johnny on the shoulder to go sit next to you

he went up to the front row to tell you the story about how he got jumped by a group of socs, and remembered a guy with multiple rings

you said you were sorry for him, and not every soc is like that, that he can’t control what other people do but only the way he reacts

he continued the conversation and found out more about your likes and dislikes, while pony was talking to cherry, and two-bit came to talk to marcia

johnny started to feel like someone cared about him other than the gang, and he felt full until the time you had to leave

you wrote down your number on a piece of paper since you wanted to keep in touch, and drove away in your mustang

he and pony talked about you and the movie on their way home, and talked about how you don’t seem that bad and johnny should try to pursue a relationship with you

the both of you would hang out weekly through the next year, sometimes sleeping over at your house since his parents would be drunk

one time you two were having a heartfelt talk about feelings and home life, and he asked you if you could be his girlfriend

since you were shocked but reciprocated the feelings, at first you didn’t say anything and johnny got real nervous

he said sorry for asking and it got awkward, but you said you’d be his girlfriend

bro has never smiled that wide in his entire life, he’s never been so happy when someone said something until now

you two talked about the failed times you were to ask each other to be partners, and kept giggling about it until your dad walked in and told you to go to bed, and to keep the door open

you ended up going to bed, curled into each other

he really liked the attention and you did too, so you gave him your number on a piece of paper and told him to call you if he wanted to talk or hang out

when he got home he started thinking about what would be good for pony and soda

he thought he had to take care of them and he was responsible so he didn’t know if he should get to know you better, he had a lot on his hands

he figured he should try to do something that makes him happy while still doing important things and taking care of his brothers

he would call you often and you would call him, planning times to meet and do things

when you two got very close after months of talking, he brought you to his house

when he brought you to his house he didn’t expect to see the whole gang there, being loud and acting wild

you didn’t mind at all and said it was okay, he later had a long talk with them about how they can’t be at his house uninvited randomly

yeah they didn’t listen at all because it happened many times after that

he thought you were beautiful and you had a swarm of guys around you, waiting to talk to you

they weren’t only nice to you because dally told them to, but because you treated them good too

he was really happy you and his friends got along but didn’t really show it

you two were at the concessions part to get food and you pulled out your wallet, showing a mickey mouse plush and you as a child in a photo

you were a little weirded out that he payed that much attention to the point where he noticed the plush in the photo, but you still talked to him

you two continued the conversation and you offered to pay for his food, he cracked some jokes which you laughed at a lot

you two watched the drive-in movie together while making jokes along the way and talking about things in the movie

you weren’t there with anyone and he was just there to mess around with people so he enjoyed being with you

you got each others numbers and started hanging out with the gang

they thought you were funny like two-bit and made the best duo ever

soda introduced him to you since you were looking for a boyfriend but all the guys who were interested in you treated you like shit

he left you and steve alone for a bit so you two talked about cars and your jobs, you decided you would visit him at the DX since he worked there

you two talked about societal problems and even opened up to each other emotionally, which was quick considering you two only knew each other for a few hours

since you two got along so well you talked to soda and asked him if he thought if was okay you two are talking

“well yeah no shit i’m fine with you two talking, i set you two up!!” he said

i mean he’s not wrong

you and steve ended up hanging out once every two weeks, then it turned to once every week, to twice and sometimes three times

he’d sometimes stay over at your house

since you two had so many common interests and problems you two got together

it was actually really mutual since you were gonna ask each other at the same time if you could date

you laughed about it later but obviously said yes

you met the gang and they liked you, turns out all of you have many common interests with each other

steve loves being with you so much and talks to soda when he needs advice

you talk to soda about steve too and he’s so happy he gets all the tea about your relationship
