"You could yell in this woman’s face,”
said Anton, chinning at an elderly passer-by approaching with the help of a wheeled shopping bag.
“She wouldn’t notice. Wouldn’t hear anything.”
“You could spit on her?”
“She’d feel that,” said Callum. “If I time it right, she’ll decide you must have done it.”

🔫 An explosive new chapter of A Net Too Wide to Break His Fall, where Callum gets to know one of his new acquaintances ... but they also get the measure of him.
Did you know I've been serialising a story in my newsletter for nearly a year?
A Net Too Wide To Break His Fall is about Callum, who is invisible and inaudible and essentially nonexistent to anyone he hasn't been introduced to.
You might think that wouldn't be too big an issue but the boy is also extremely bad at maintaining close relationships with the people he knows (ie the ones capable of introducing him to new people)
Basically imagine if letting your friendships and family relationships lapse led to you functionally becoming a ghost.
Callum's solution to this is to get involved in organised crime and then almost immediately decide to turn coat, which has led to the situation he's currently in.

🗝 Chapter 10 of A Net Too Wide To Break His Fall, where we discover just how bad it is to get locked in a cellar when most people in the world can't see or hear you
He hunted on his hands and knees among the shattered remains of the chair for more bits he could improvise into lockpicks. His world narrowed to that purpose, so much that when one hand came away from the floor wet, he just stopped for a long moment, confused. Then jerked back, slipping, jarring a knee on the concrete and tearing the other palm on sheared metal shards, hearing Anton’s gunshot again, seeing recognition dawn in the eyes of the woman whose blood he was crawling around in.

Later, they figured out the sequence of events.
The sequence started with Callum, locked in a bare basement room with a corpse for company, ripping cabling out of the walls through a rusty junction box in the corner, and ended with Callum and Lisaveta warily circling an alliance in Lisaveta’s living room.

⛓️ A chain of events in A Net Too Wide To Break His Fall chapter 12
I originally set this months chapter of A Net Too Wide in one of Vivian Hithercombe's crumbling Gothic mansions outside the city, far from the corridors of power, and then facepalmed when I realised this was clearly the moment for a full circle return to where it all started. The bridge was built in the house on Bronze Street, so there too must it burn.
